I’ve just read all of your 4 rockstown series. I agree with you when you said in one of the posts that at the first time we read the manga, we couldn’t get the full essence why albert sent the package from rockstown. Well, in fact, we wouldn’t know the true reason until the very end of the manga. To me, it seemed albert was afraid to show up in front of candy after his recovery. He knew he couldn’t show up as a vagabond albert anymore because (probably) he had decided to tell her the truth soon ..when the time was right. And he knew that their relationship’s nature was changed. Yes, we certainly cannot read the manga once. I read it many many times when i was a teen. And when i read it again after so long ( my comic books are now so fragile! hahhaah) in my late 20s, i could get the meaning of the this candy journey in different angle. Being an adult and married, i now totally understand albert-candy’s love.

As for terry-candy breakup, i always think that they both had the same portion of responsibility. Yes, candy is such a good incarnate, she’s too good even for her own good. But terry on the other hand, if you saw the manga’s pictures, you could tell that terry has this doubt expression since the beginning. He didn’t give a firm rejection to susanna’s feeling when susanna said she love him and she shooed candy away in chicago. He played a nice guy after the accident and persistently visited susanna in hospital despite her mother chased him away. He didn’t tell candy the truth. And the one that made me frustrated was when he arrived on hospital rooftop, he just stared at candy for a while and then walked to susanna, carried her away in arms, and just walk and pass candy. He even not asked her to go inside with them!

Obviously they’re kids at that time. They’re immature and have none to give them advices.

Oh and i disliked the french version of this anime. They changed the rockstown scene to happy clinic scene. It’s totally got opposite meaning from the original manga. In manga we can see albert’s love is selfless. As long as candy happy, he’s happy even if he has to lose her to terry. But in french anime, it’s like albert’s selfishness that terry hold himself back and went back to NY without meeting candy.

OMG i am writing too long. 🙂 I am so sorry. I think it’s because i just got back to this whole candy candy fandom after more than 15 years. 🙂

Hello Reeka!! I can’t believe I haven’t got notified at all that I have got a new comment! So that’s why I didn’t notice till now.
About the Rockstown episode, you were so right about the anime version (not just French). It’s the complete opposite, and it frustrates me to no end. I don’t understand those anime script writers. Either they didn’t get the right script from Mizuki or they were pro-Terry? Just kidding. 😛
Anyway, I was told Terry fans used this part against Albert and said he was very selfish not to let Terry see Candy. In fact, Albert was the one who led Candy to Terry in the manga, but it was Candy who left without talking to Terry (on her own accord, which speaks volumes). Grrr….
About Terry, I can’t agree with you more about his way of dealing with Susanna and her mother. He felt responsible for her accident, and that was why he struggled. The way I interpreted his character in the manga was that he had already decided to call off his relationship with Candy, and that was why he couldn’t tell her or even show his affections to her. I actually intend to talk about this on my blog in the near future, so I won’t talk much here.
About Albert… in my imagination he was probably in turmoil with his own feelings with Candy, and that inspired me to write the short story “Afternoon Nap”. 😛 At any rate, I think many anime fans didn’t know much about this important episode in the manga, which is a pity. That’s why I spent time writing these posts just to ‘speak up’ for Albert. Sigh. Thanks for reading these, Reeka!

Hi, Thanks for replying! No, my comment was very fresh hehee, just a day before you replied.

Something about terry was indeed saddening. I was in love with him when i first read manga volume 3 and 4 ( in my country, it’s published around 1991, one volume’s published in one month). I had to buy another piece of volume 4 because the first one was worn out due to excessive reading :). My heart was shattered to read volume 7 and those infamous hospital stair scene. But i knew back then (even in my teen age!) that candy must move on and life goes on.

That is something that i couldn’t understand when i read a few of terry-candy fanfic. I feltl bad it when i saw the writer trying to picture their hardship and forgot the nature of their characters. Some writers seem to forget that our heroine was a cheerful and optimistic person. She brings happiness to people. She won’t let herself succumb in sadness for long time ( we got some of this kind of scene in manga when she tried to cheer herself and be her usual self). So, when writers picture her as a frustrated woman who marry another man out of love and always think about terry ( some even make her cheat on her partner), God! I felt like screaming. And one thing i always laughed at, i believe mizuki didn’t mean to portray susanna character as an evil queen to begin with. Yes she’s a bit selfish and childish, but we knew that she at the end encouraged terry to chase candy. and when terry disappeared ( to rockstown), she waited patiently and said she believed in him.

Oh my, when i was starting to give comment, i was unstoppable! LOL. It’s so good to see and meet people with the same passion. In my 30s, some of my friends think i’m weird to discuss candy candy. They ( inc. my husband) said i’m obsessed! hahahaha.

i look forward to your post about terry. I know you love this character too and we have nothing against him. We just see it from different point of view :). I believe we all have “terry” in our life before we meet and marry “albert”. Well, i know i have my own terry story :).

        cheers!

It’s sad…but he has to deal with it. He made his own choice first anyway.

  3. Lezti says:

yep, tragic love! Although Terry’s love just couldnt be that strong, not like Albert’s thats for sure.

It’s a pleasure to meet a faithful fan who loves Candy and Albert as a couple! I love your blog!

  6. Yanyan says:

Terry was totally confused. If he was serious with his love for Candy, he’d have been there for her no matter what. But it appears to be the other way around. It’s very sad scene indeed.

  7. CKati says:

This is such a sad scene. My heart just breakes for Terry over and over again. 🙁 The saddest part of them all is the letter he writes to Candy in CCFS in which he sort of tells her that he still loves her.
He is such a wonderfull character. Taking responsibility like that and giving up the love of his life. He definitly deserves a
    salute!

Again, you managed to give in this analysis the facts as they are.
Keep up the good work 😀

    • Thank you CKati for your feedback! 🙂 Sorry for upsetting you again. 🙁 Anyway, I think some people have blamed Terry for not fighting for his love. That might be true, but I actually see that as a sacrifice. He let go of Candy so that she could find happiness elsewhere. Likewise, Candy decided to leave him so that he could have peace of mind. In short, Terry is actually a tragic character. :'(

wow…, i just was chatting with another fan and decided to read the Rockstown incident Tetralogy …. I was just saying Terry is in fact a tragic character…. amazing…. bravo!!! And, I have to say anime is totally different from manga (Mizuki’s original work is not published but only manga-cised)….. which is very unfortunate that breed a whole lot of Terry fans…. who have yet to feel the true love between Candy and Albert.

        • anonymous says:

Anime editors who have missed a lot of Candy and Albert scenes from the manga are rather fan-cists. It’s like a term for RACIST. People who only like Terry, so I call them ‘fancists’. Or is Terry-cist better? Apparently in the manga shows more of romance between Candy and Albert and anime failed to add such important things, especially when Candy asked Albert to race with her to climb on the tree which I love so much. God forgive me for calling the editors ‘fan-cists’. Can you blame me? 😛

        • I agree with you about the anime version being totally different in which Albert made Terry sober up by beating him. Not only that, Terry could only see Candy without her knowing it. Some Terry fans even blamed Albert for being selfish!! I mean this is completely opposite in the manga! 🙁

            Ms. Puddleglum,

Glad my ‘fancist’ comment didn’t offend you. I was afraid some people would come and stir some trouble of what I said. Actually, I was expecting you to take it off, but I’m happy we’re on the same both. I promise I won’t use it again 😉

[…] I was shocked when I read that some Terry fans said that Terry was Candy’s soul mate. Come on, Terry hardly knew Candy to say the least. Moreover, when Mrs. Marlowe pushed him away, he persisted visiting Susanna in the hospital daily on his own accord (possibly out of duty or guilt). Later, he didn’t have the guts to tell Mrs. Marlowe that he actually loved another woman. Then, when Candy selflessly decided to leave him, he didn’t protest at all. Some people, like Reeka, was disappointed at Terry’s behavior at the rooftop. I figure someone possibly informed Terry that Susanna had been missing, and that was why he rushed to the hospital right after the premiere. He held the freezing cold Susanna in his arms without a word (like it was the most natural thing to him), and it was Susanna (likely grateful) who told him that Candy had saved her from committing suicide. He was astonished but didn’t thank Candy for some reason (took it for granted or was he somewhat ashamed to have kept the whole Susanna thing from Candy?). Remember the way they silently stared at each other at that moment? It was as though Terry was asking Candy to understand his struggles — that there was no way he could leave Susanna after what she had done for him. Candy, being a kind-hearted girl, must have grasped his unspoken words right away. Come to think of it, why didn’t he even try to fight for his feelings for Candy? You can read my very old post concerning Terry’s decision. […]
