I want to thank Ms. Puddle for referring extensively to this particular manga scene, as it seems to be one of the most important in Albert and Candy’s story. It is indeed very significant of Albert’s feelings at least. Sadly in the Greek manga I have read this scene is translated quite differently. Candy says to him: “Albert, what would I do without you? You are always so kind and patient.” Albert is just looking at her and in that scene it is simply written: “Albert too doesn’t know what he would have done without Candy’s enthusiasm and optimism.” As you can see this translation doesn’t give the reader much to think about. This version was taken directly from the Italian manga which provided their own sequel ignoring Mizuki’s intentions about Candy and Albert, and so the Greek manga continued the story just as the Italians did. I hope CCFS Italian translation put everything in place after so many years of misinterpreting that beautiful story. I’m so glad the real text in this scene is much different (and so much better) than that I knew. Albert’s feelings have begun to change and maybe he realizes it already. His picture is very expressive and indeed, this picture is worth a thousand words, all the words he can’t or won’t say.
Yes, Reeka, he is really very handsome in this scene, and resembles Anthony a lot. He is an adult version of Anthony. I wonder too how we readers didn’t realize his significant role when reading Candy Candy for the first time. Is it possible that as teenagers we had been too much in love with Terry to see the real Albert and how important he was in Candy’s life? Maybe as adult readers we understand much better what true and mature love means, that love Albert gives generously to Candy? I don’t know. Personally I blame the manga version I had read for this misunderstanding and for the disappointment I had felt back then.
Evelyn, thank you for introducing the Spanish manga version. I have found it and begun reading it little by little. I don’t know Spanish but I use Google translator and it seems very helpful so far. It is so much more detailed and close to the original, I believe, and in many scenes the translation is very different from the Greek one. I haven’t got yet to this scene discussed here but I already know that it is far better than I imagined. I suppose the best is yet to come.
Ms. Puddle, this Lakewood visit as described in the manga is one of my favorites too. Even in the Greek manga I could see a special bond between them. In fact all their scenes from Uncle William’s revelation and afterwards were so beautiful and romantic. It’s too bad they are not in CCFS, as with Mizuki’s wonderful narrative style they would have been no less than a masterpiece. Also it’s true that the scene in Lakewood described in the letters of the Epilogue would have been excellent in Igarashi’s drawings, especially the embrace between them…I suppose we must always find something lacking, something more we could have asked to make this story even more perfect. We would like a detailed narrative for those scenes in the manga that are not in the novel, and we also would like the drawings we loved to accompany the novel to make it move vivid and appealing.
I have enjoyed all the interesting comments about certain scenes of Albert and Candy. I have to read the manga in full to realize all these things in detail. For the time being, I am glad to read all these enlightening posts about parts of the story we had overlooked or misinterpreted.

Oh my! I didn’t read the comments but reading this post, I see many of us had the same thought that made you wrote a new post… lol… weee 😀

Anyway, yep, I always have thought that Albert’s next thoughts, he could image her being a ‘bride’, maybe his bride? It was he was saying, look at you now, you are behaving as a bride with me and for me, that is all I wish in a woman, it is priceless… awwww

Yep, I guess he already had developed romantic feelings for her by that time.

    • Ms Puddle says:

You’re right, my friend. You also quoted the same passage like some others. Very interesting. 😉

Yes, it’s clear Albert saw Candy as a lady at this point, not his sister or a young girl. He even implied she was good enough to be his bride. 😉 A proof that he had tender feelings for her already. 🙂

  3. Agnès says:

Happy to see you back and you are better, dear Ms Puddle! Many Thanks for your direct translation, it is priceless!

In the French version, grown up Candy and Albert used the word “vous” not “tu” in English it is the same word ”you”. “Vous” is a word of respect when you use it for one person. For example when you don’t use to know someone, for an older one or when the person have to be respected (a boss for example) and in aristocrat family it is a habit to use “Vous” even between the members of the same family, especially in the beginning of the nineteenth century. I suppose the translator has thought of the history context. I don’t know if I was clear, it isn’t easy to explain in English because there is no difference!

And indeed, Albert-San was translated by Mr Albert and I don’t like it because even if you respect a person you can use “vous” without use mister (monsieur in French) when you know him/her very well. After have shared the same house during months even about two years with Albert I think Candy hadn’t have to call him Mr Albert, for me it’s a nonsense for a friend.

Evelyn: Candy exactly said “j’ai l’impression que je ne ferai jamais une bonne épouse” so “I feel that I will never make a good wife/spouse”
Ms Puddle, if you are agree and for Evelyn, may I let here a link to read the French version of the manga ? http://www.anime-story.com/mangas/candycandy/

That scene is for me the first palpable hint that Albert was in love with Candy, at least had strong feelings for her.
As I said in a precedent comment, if you remember, shortly after this scene in the manga, Candy bought cookbooks to improve her skills and we see her imagining to surprise Albert with a gorgeous meal, and I can’t help but think of a link between these two scenes, perhaps Mizuki has let here a clue? Did Candy unconsciously strive to be a “nice bride” or a “good wife” for Albert even if she was still unaware of her true feelings for him? 😀 😉

    • Agnès says:

I meant : grown up Candy to call Albert used the word “vous” 🙁

      • Evelyn says:

HI Agnès, thank you so much for providing a link to the French version you use! That is so nice of you 🙂 I just included the link to the Spanish version as well on my post above!

    • Ms Puddle says:

Bonjour, chère Agnès! First of all, thanks for your warm wishes! Also thanks for the link to the manga version in French! Appreciate it. 🙂

I agree with you that it’s very strange if Candy still called Albert “Mr. Albert” after living with him for such a long time, and the neighbors would definitely find it odd, don’t you think? Yes, I know the difference between “vous” and “tu” in French, and I’m surprised that Candy used “vous” all the way actually. As Evelyn said, in Spanish, Candy switched from using “Usted” to “Tú” later when she got to know Albert more.

Anyway, Japanese also puts lots of emphasis on politeness and formality in language, but Candy talked to Albert in casual terms though calling him “Albert-san”. She added “san” to “Albert” mainly because he was years older than her, and Japanese people call their elder brothers and/or sisters using “san” too. Anyway, I’ll talk more in a new post.

I like this manga scene a lot too. First, as you said, it’s apparent Albert had tender feelings for Candy, if not already in love. 😉 He didn’t see her as a little girl but as a young lady (a suitable bride). About the other manga scene in which Candy was imagining herself as a good cook, that is so sweet too. Perhaps you’re right that Candy subconsciously wanted to be a “nice bride” for Albert! 🙂 I think Candy was probably unaware of the depth of her feelings for Albert at that point, but she undeniably wanted to please him (Candy wanted to be proud of her cooking skills and wished to impress Albert). This reminds me of another scene back when she was in New York in which Candy dreamed of her future with Terry by preparing breakfast for him? We know she loved Terry then and wanted a future with him, but now with Albert, it seems to me Candy expected to continue living with Albert for an indefinite period of time. Like she didn’t anticipate his departure at all (did she know it would take a long time to master her cooking?) 😆

    • Evelyn says:

Hello Agnès and Ms Puddle!! Thank you, Agnès, for providing the French translation for the scene about being a good bride. In Spanish she says: “Tengo la impresión de que jamás seré una buena esposa…” or “I have the impression that I will never be a good wife…” yes these were Albert’s first actual expressed thoughts we are able to see/read, but I feel that Mizuki also lets us see many clues that Albert had feelings for Candy even before this wife/bride scene. The way he used to look at her in silence, for an example after Candy came back from her breakup with Terry, Albert took her and gave her his undivided attention and then he just stared at her in bed after Candy was done sharing with him her sorrows. Also, when Candy would leave their apartment, Albert would just watch her from the window wishing for her to return soon.

As we know, translations are not 100% accurate and will not capture the true substance of the original Japanase text. I found that Spanish and French were the most similar and true to each other in translation from the 3 that I read, but they still have a few variations and the formality of Candy’s tone toward Albert is one of those differences between both French and Spanish. I do know that in the Spanish manga Candy as a little girl called him Señor Albert because he looked so much older than her. Then in London she still called him Sr. Albert. But at the hospital, as a grown Candy, when she went to see him in his room, little by little she started addressing him in a more informal way commenting of how handsome he was. She would go back and forth but after they moved in together at the Magnolia house she was consistently calling him by his first name as her equal. 🙂

With your permission Ms Puddle, here is the link to the files for all 9 volumes in Spanish for Candy Candy. There is only one flaw, the page when Candy goes to Dr Martin to help her draw the missing picture of Albert is missing or omitted but you can find it in the English and French translation. I’m sure it was a mistake, but otherwise is a complete series of the entire novel.

Ms Puddle, you mentioned that Candy was imagining herself as being an excellent cook for Albert, like daydreaming as if they were a couple. Yes, throughout the story, Candy has happy moments when she sees herself in a dreaming-like state of happiness with Albert by her side. When Candy came back from looking for Albert all over town ending up fighting and saving Neil. She returns, finds him at home, then she goes to her room to get cleaned up and she looks so happy to have Albert back by her side and again she was in a dreaming state of happiness! At this stage, they both are developing strong feelings for each other but also a strong bond and friendship which will make this relationship last. 😉

      • Ms Puddle says:

I can’t agree with you more about all the subtle ways Albert showed his feelings for Candy, dear Evelyn!! Likewise, the way Candy desperately looked for amnesiac Albert twice tells us Albert was truly special to her. She needed him as much as he needed her.

About translation, I think the Spanish version did a better job in terms of capturing the change in Candy’s attitude towards Albert. Thank you so much for the link to the Spanish version. I’ll share it on my blog later. I wonder if Candy still used “tú” after knowing Albert’s true identity?

        • Evelyn says:

Dear Ms Puddle. Thank you for your response. That scene when Candy found out that Albert was uncle William also is one of my favorite ones because I feel her feelings start coming out toward Albert. First to answer your question, in the Spanish translation, after she is in a daze absorbing who Albert really is she started speaking to him in a formal way saying: “Yo…jamá me di cuenta de que…”, “Entonces usted ha estado siempre junto a mí…”, or “I…never realized that…”, “Then you (formal you) have always been near me…”.
Then Albert interrupts her on the next scene saying, “Deja de dirigirte a mí de esa forma, Candy.”, “Tú nunca me has hablado así, !qué yo sepa!” or “Stop addressing me that way, Candy”, “You (Informal you) have never spoken to me that way, that I know of!”
So, yes, she did try to go back to addressing him in a formal way immediately upon realizing who Albert was, but Albert stopped her and she went back to addressing him in an informal way as before. 🙂

The next thing I wanted to bring up is the fact that when Candy was still processing in her mind all this, she gets into what I call her dreamy-state with the bubbles around her and says to herself “Albert…Tío William, está deslumbrante en toda esa luz…” or “Albert… uncle William, looks dazzling in all that light…”.
The last time she used the word “deslumbrar=dazzle” was with Terry in Scotland, when he was sharing with Candy his passion for the theater and Candy said to herself “Terry”,”…me deslumbra” or “Terry”,”he dazzles me”. A bit later in a different scene, Candy and Terry started climbing up a tree, she then looked up at Terry and immediately felt weak on her knees loosing all her strength just about falling off the tree. I interpret this reaction as Candy literally falling in love.
Candy had a similar reaction immediately upon finding Albert after missing for months and discovering who he was. After thinking he looked dazzling, the strength on her legs literally left her collapsing onto herself. I totally feel that at this moment, Candy felt something in her heart that she never felt before for Albert. It was also the shock of discovering the truth but the way this scene was drawn so similarly as when she literally felt in love with Terry, I can’t help but feel that this was the scene when Candy finally felt her true feelings come through for Albert and she couldn’t handle it and collapsed. This particular reaction of Candy’s has always intrigued me but I strongly feel that this was when she knew she loved him. She cared and missed him dearly and dreamed with his return but in my opinion this scene completes and defines her feelings for Albert through her actions. I would like to know what your thoughts are on this, Ms Puddle 🙂

          • Ms Puddle says:

Dear Evelyn, I briefly checked the link, and the particular page you pointed me to (Vol 7, p 15) is broken! 🙁 I have problems with some other pages too. Don’t know why. Anyway, I looked up the Japanese manga and Candy used the English word “Handsome” plus the Japanese word Suteki when she sneaked into Room 0, checking on Albert (still unconscious). She said that his blond hair was more Suteki (nice, beautiful, attractive, etc.) than his brown hair, and without wearing dark sunglasses, he looked more handsome. Later, she let her friends, Stear and the others, come to Room 0 to take a look at unconscious Albert, remember? Stear also used the English word “handsome” and further remarked “with such good-looking face, no need to hide” or something like that. 😉

Thank you for more information about Candy’s reaction to discovering Albert’s true identity! Yes, I remember that scene too, that she wanted to use respectful terms but Albert brushed it off and urged her to talk to him like she always did. Thank you! That’s interesting, so that confirms once again that Candy had always talked casually with Albert, treating him as her equal (as friends). 🙂

Evelyn, you’ve drawn very intriguing comparison between the two manga scenes! I’ve never thought of it that way myself. 😀 In my short story “It must have been love”, I wrote that Candy collapsed because she couldn’t handle the reality and her mixed emotions of love, gratitude, and shock. To me, by that time Candy had romantic feelings for Albert already, but at the same time, she had to process the truth that he was her guardian, whom she was tremendously grateful to. It was just too much for her to take at that very moment. I’m so glad you also think similarly. Some people believed that Candy hadn’t developed romantic feelings until after she knew he was her prince, which I disagree. 😉 As some of us always say, Candy was in love with Albert by then, but she hid her feelings and returned to Pony’s home. His confession at the end, telling her that he was her prince, was a bonus. She realized she was in love with the man she had always longed for (Prince on the Hill). That explains why she was ecstatic, running towards his outstretched arms. 😀

I see what you are saying, Ms Puddle. It is doing it to me too because it is such a large file not every image is downloading correctly. However, there is a way around that! When you open the desired volume, in this case lets say 7, please move your cursor at the top of the manga and a menu will appear above. The middle button has a Down arrow which says “Download”, please click it. A new tab will open and you just have to click “Download Anyway”. Then you should get a PDF file ready to be opened. On my computer I see it at the bottom left of my screen. Your desired Candy Candy volume in Spanish should open up with not problem and you should be able to see every page. It is working for me… I hope it works for you! 🙂

            • Ms Puddle says:

I guess so, but at least we can download that, so that’s great! Thank you once again for the link, Evelyn 🙂

          • Evelyn says:

It will definitely work by downloading! Any questions please let me know. You are quite welcome, Ms Puddle!! 🙂

Also, I meant to tell you that I completely agree with your argument that Candy already had romantic feelings for Albert when she learned of his true identity in Lakewood. Finally, I love what you said about Candy being ecstatic when she found out that her price was the man she was in love with. If you think about it, Candy felt so safe in Albert’s arms! So sweet 😉

            • Ms Puddle says:

Sure I will, thanks Evelyn dear!

I forgot to tell you the Lakewood episode near the end of the manga is absolutely my favorite! We see how emotional Candy was, and Albert was so handsome and tender! Too bad this is not described in CCFS at all, and the paragraph about this discovery is way too short. Sigh. 🙁

Yes, it was so sweet that Candy realized her prince was no other than the man she was in love with, also the one whose presence gave her marvelous sense of security. Awww… 🙂

          • Evelyn says:

You mean the part when Candy and Albert share some personal moments alone in Lakewood after his revelation that his was uncle William? That’s too bad 🙁 is CCFS the same story but a continuation of the manga or a brand new story in itself? Didn’t the author say that she has not changed her mind and feels the same about her story after all these years?

            • Ms Puddle says:

Yes and no, Evelyn dear. Mizuki didn’t change her mind, but she did modify the plot slightly by moving scenes around. I think the part walking around Lakewood with Albert alone is moved to much, much later, so it changed to Prince on the Hill picked up Candy from Pony’s Home and toured around Lakewood together. To me that was their first official date. 😛 That was also when Candy suggested Albert take her back to the forest where Anthony had had his accident. This particular part was one of the new scenes added in CCFS, a very beautiful one too. So don’t despair, Evelyn. 🙂

          • Evelyn says:

Thank you for explaining the rearrangement of the scenes in the new CCFS. I think I read about Candy asking Albert to take her back to the forest where Anthony died somewhere on your website. Very interesting. I’ll have to do some research about this scene and where it falls in the new CCFS story! Thanks for all the info you give us 🙂

          • Evelyn says:

Thank you for the link, Ms Puddle!! 🙂

        • Evelyn says:

          Thank you!! 🙂

      • Agnès says:

You’re very welcome Evelyn! 🙂 Interesting comparison between the two scenes indeed!

        • Evelyn says:

Thank you Agnès. Yes I have always felt those two scenes were drawn very similarly and represent the same emotions in Candy. Your link to the French version of this story works for me. Were you and Ms Puddle able to open my link?

Ms Puddle, I know you had trouble viewing the Spanish volumes of this story. Did you ever get those to work by downloading each file? Just curious! Thanks.

          • Ms Puddle says:

Dear Evelyn! Thanks for waiting, and yes, I downloaded Vol 7, and it worked! I noted that Candy used the word seductor!! LOL… 😉 Thanks for the link again!

About Candy’s emotions, I think her feelings for Albert were way more complicated than her feelings for Terry. She was attracted to Terry for sure, and she was beginning to fall for him (as you said, she almost fell when climbing the tree).

However, with Albert, her feelings were mixed with strong friendship, unrequited love, deep gratitude and possibly disbelief! Yet, you might be right that at the very moment Candy collapsed she realized she was in love! 😛

          • Evelyn says:

Yeah, glad the link worked!! I read this story in Spanish on my iPad like a e-book.

You are so right about her feelings being a lot more complicated for Albert than they were for Terry. I never thought of it this way! Candy’s feelings for Terry were merely physical attraction because they had nothing in common almost incompatible in substance. However with Albert, I can see what you are saying when she collapsed, she had a mound of mixed emotions flood her heart when she collapsed. The reason I say she also fell something stronger than friendship at that moment is because in the Spanish version she uses the term “está deslumbrante” or “he is dazzling”. That word in Spanish was only used in relation with Anthony, Terry and now Albert. Thank you for your insight, Ms Puddle!! 🙂

            • Ms Puddle says:

Yes, to me, Candy and Terry really had not much in common, and I think their friendship wasn’t strong either. They had mutual attraction for sure, but I don’t know if they would truly work out even without Susanna. A lasting relationship needs more than just physical attraction. 😉

Thank you for pointing out that Candy used the same Spanish expression for all three men! I actually think her reunion with Albert in Lakewood was more romantic than the equivalent in the anime. Anyway, one day I might check the Japanese version if Candy also used a similar description for Terry in Scotland and Albert in Lakewood 🙂

          • Agnès says:

            Hello Ms Puddle and Evelyn!

In French the same word is used too «Monsieur Albert… Oncle William est éblouissant dans toute cette lumière » it means « Mr. Albert … Uncle William is dazzling in all this light». It was like a revelation for her and her facial expression spoke volume! 😉
Later when she wanted to serve tea and spilled it she said « Mon cœur bat à tout rompre » i.e. « my heart is pounding » it is strong!
After in the cabine before fireplace, Albert spoke about Terry’s comeback to Stratford company Candy thought «le temps achèvera de nous séparer… et peu à peu de plus en plus de choses invisibles vont s’amonceler dans cet espace » i.e. «Time will complete to separate us … and gradually more and more invisible things will pile up in this space» what the hidden sense of this sentence? For me she realized that she moved on about Terry! Don’t you think? But I don’t know if it is again in CCFS!

I love all the moments between them in this manga scene! They were more intimate than in the anime.
And yes she used the same word for Terry too, she said « il m’eblouit» i.e. «he dazzles me»!

            • Ms Puddle says:

              Bonjour Agnès et Evelyn! 🙂

I’ve briefly checked the manga, and unfortunately Candy didn’t use the same word. For Terry in Scotland, Candy was attracted to him and admired him in secret, テリィがまぶしい

The adjective she used could mean bright, dazzling, glaring, or blinding. So Candy was thinking Terry was dazzling. 😉

However, in Lakewood, soon after Candy realized Albert was actually Uncle William, she shed many tears and thought Albert-san, Granduncle William, 光の中でゆれている

It means that he (his figure?) was swaying in the midst of all this light. I think it’s because her tears kept blurring her vision?

The verb could also mean flickering or even rocking, depending on the context.

Unfortunately none of these is in CCFS 🙁
But I totally agree with you, Agnès, that Candy and Albert were more intimate in the manga. In the anime, we just didn’t feel her happiness or astonishment. She didn’t even shed any tears, and when he revealed to her that he was her prince, she was way too calm. :'(

          • Evelyn says:

            Bonjour Ms Puddle and Agnès!!

Great to have all these translations to corroborate with each other here! Yes, I remember reading almost the same in the French version. Thanks for sharing what your version says in Japanese, Ms Puddle and thank you Agnès for your translation in French! “Deslumbrar” can also mean dazzle, fascinate, blind, splendor (due to light or brightness). But in Spanish when she uses “deslumbrar” in this particular context it implies that he dazzles her. Anthony said about Candy that she dazzled him at some point when he was staring at her in love earlier in the story. Very young love! so sweet 🙂

Candy and Albert’s reunion in the anime, I felt like crying. It was so dry and emotionless! Candy even told Albert to hide so no one could see him or something like that in the Spanish version. All I could think is “WHAT??!!” Really, it is not even close to the manga. It seems that the anime writers were trying to degrade the character of Albert on-purpose. No wonder fans who only saw the anime think there is no point to this story and the only logical solution is for her to end up with Terry because he way they made Albert and Candy’s encounter is pretty pathetic. As you said Ms Puddle, way too calm!!

I can’t wait to find out more about CCFS. Even though these beautiful scenes were removed in Final Story, 🙁 I have read that we find other scenes equally or more romantic in their letters to each other. Plus all the small hints that Candy gives as she narrates her past indicates that she lives with Albert.

            • Ms Puddle says:

Hola Evelyn! Where exactly did Anthony say that? Just curious 😉

Yes, I agree their young love was so sweet, but Mizuki had planned right at the beginning to cut it short.

Two thumbs up for what you said about how disappointing the anime ending was. Dry, pathetic and emotionless were exactly the right words. Yet, about Candy’s reaction (asking Albert to hide), I believe the scriptwriter borrowed the idea from Daddy-long-legs. But even then I won’t forgive the anime team for jamming everything in one episode. In Daddy-long-legs, both Judy and Master Jervie were highly emotional, unlike Albert and Candy in the anime. :'( Not only Candy appeared too calm (not much astonishment), Albert looked too composed, as though he had expected her to come or had no special feelings for her.

Yup, some beautiful scenes near the end of the manga are either scattered in various places in CCFS or not mentioned. I don’t know why Mizuki did that though, and yet some scenes were described in length, especially Albert’s confession as Prince on the Hill. 🙂

          • Evelyn says:

Hola Ms Puddle. I found one of the scenes. I think there is another one but I’ll have to dig it up with more time. The one I’m found of Anthony saying was actually him imagining Candy growing roses with him. Is Volume 1 page 169 on the volume or page 171 on the actual manga. All three of the cousins are talking among themselves how they hate to see her as a main and the idea of adopting her came up. Then each one of them starting imagining their lives with Candy. Archi imagined dancing with her in beautiful dresses, Stear imagined Candy inventing with him and Anthony said he imagined her creating new roses with him. Then he said “Llevaría todos los días los mismos jeans… y su sonrisa me deslumbraría baja el cielo…” or “She would wear every day the same jeans.. and her smile would dazzle me under the sky…” 🙂

            • Ms Puddle says:

Oh, I remember that scene when three of them were dreaming of being the one for Candy! If I have time, I’ll look it up. Sadly, none of them had their wishes granted. :'(

  4. Reeka says:

Ms Puddle, I hope you’re recovering and feeling well very soon.

This scene is indeed very memorable. I like how they were actually not directly talking to each other. So it’s like Mizuki (and Igarashi) presented this scene for readers taking in their indirect message, that Albert at this point of time, had been helplessly in love with Candy. To me, if Candy complained about her poor cooking and her thought of not being a good bride/wife directly to Albert, and he replied as he did silently in manga, we could think that he said it just for being nice to Candy. And that would change the whole meaning of this particular scene.

I too don’t agree with the translation of Albert-san as Mr. Albert. It sounds wrong. As asian, I certainly can relate it to the custom in my country. With so many races and language in my country, we have quite a lot ways to call someone older ( few years ), and they’re used for many purposes. From the least intimate to the most intimate way. So for me, an argument from T-fans about the way Candy called Albert as Mr Albert is a hint that Anohito was not Albert, is a total rubbish.

God, Albert was so handsome in this picture, wasn’t he? How could I not realise back then that he couldn’t be just a random vagabond? How could I not see the similarity between his profile and POTH ( or Anthony) ? And by how his name also started with A like the other Ardley’s boys.

Yes Reeka dear, slowly, but recovering. 🙂

I totally agree with you if Candy and Albert were talking to each other, the entire scene would have been very different. So you’re right Candy didn’t mean to talk to Albert, probably even murmuring to herself. That’s why Albert didn’t answer her either, but he did have some tender feelings for her already (especially by the way Igarashi drew this scene). To some men, Candy’s lack of skills in the kitchen was definitely a disadvantage, but to Albert, she was good enough to be his bride. Note that he didn’t know who she really was, and she was single (already broken up with Terry months ago).

As I said in another comment, I might discuss why Candy called Albert “Albert-san” one day. I need to get my ideas organized first. 🙂

Reeka, amnesiac Albert was always handsome to me, from the first moment he appeared as a patient lying on the stretcher all the way to the end of the manga. Igarashi did draw him with details and care. With his eyes always showing tenderness, Terry looked somewhat different from Albert though Terry was also a handsome guy.

I guess Candy always called him with “Albert-san” because she knows he is older than she is. The original langauge consider the age of counterpart significant and differ the calling by adding some, regardless of the intimacy. And that’s the way written in Korea where we use a language showing many similarities with Japanese. There’s a distinction between meaning of ‘Mr.’ and ‘-san’ hence it’d better let her call him Albert in English but not in Japanese it’s so awkward and even rude.
Anyway, so happy to see one of my favorite scenes here. I feel they were already like a married couple at this moment.. love it.
It’s my first comment at yours isn’t it? 🙂
I just wanted to talk about ‘-san’ which was pretty intriguing to me comparing Japanese korean and English.

Hi, nice to meet you. Are you from Korea? You might want to write your email address next time you comment. Once your first comment is approved, your future comments with the same email address will be automatically approved. I see that you have written a very similar comment, so I’ll remove that one if it’s OK with you. 🙂

Thanks for your input about why Candy kept calling Albert “Albert-san”. I’ll actually discuss that in more detail one day, so may I quote your comment?

This is one of my favorite scenes as well. Like you, I also think they acted like a married couple, only Candy wasn’t very helpful in the kitchen LOL! 😉 In addition, we get to see Albert falling for her in secret despite her lack of skills in cooking. 😛 Once again, he loved her for who she was.

Oh my goodness, I really never thought of it that way about Albert not seeing her as a little girl but as a lady. I just thought of it as Albert not remembering her! So he really got to know her from scratch, didn’t he? 🙂

Yes, Candy did really say that! 🙂 at least in the Spanish translation. I think I also remember her saying the same in the French translation but my link to the French translation does not work anymore so maybe someone can corroborate. May I share with you the link to the Spanish manga I’ve been using? Is so much more complete and expressive that the English translation.

    • Ms Puddle says:

Oh yes, Evelyn dear. To me, Albert without any memory could see Candy in a different light as well. 🙂 He ‘met’ her as a young lady at his rock bottom, and she was at a marriageable age. (Remember he called her Miss Candy at first?) The orange store owner ‘proved’ that. 😉 Besides, Neil wanted to marry her some months later, and Madam Elroy didn’t see her too young either. 😉

Of course you’re more than welcome to share any useful link here. I might add the link to the Spanish version to a new post about another manga scene too if you like. 🙂

      • Evelyn says:

Dear Ms Puddle, you also make a very interesting point about Candy being of marriageable age! Once again, another eye opener when you put it this way. I posted the link above to the source I use to read the Spanish translation. When I’m quoting you a line from a scene, I refer to this link and everything I have mentioned about Candy saying that Albert is handsome to seductive in Volume 7 page 15. Please let me know if the link works.

I am so glad you are feeling better! 🙂

        • Ms Puddle says:

Thanks again, dear Evelyn, for your concern. I’m better, thank God!

About Candy at her marriageable age, I didn’t realize it either until I read the Japanese text that Candy actually used the word ‘bride’ and so did Albert. In other words, Albert did see Candy as a suitable bride, unlike what many Terry fans claimed that Candy was merely a young girl or little sister to Albert.

I’ll check the link to the manga in Spanish tomorrow. In particular I’ll look up the page you talked about (though I understand very little Spanish … ;). )

Hi Ms Puddle!!! I’m so happy to hear you are doing better!! 🙂
I had mentioned that Candy gradually started addressing Albert in an informal way for the first time after Albert was admited to the hospital amnesiac when she first went to visit him in room zero with Puppet. She had always addressed him in a formal manner. However in the Spanish translation, it is very noticeable when she first addresses him informally, as one speaks to a close friend; she complimented Albert speaking to him directly about how handsome he looked as a blond and without his glasses he looked yet more seductive 🙂 This scene always stood out for me as it showed a Candy seeing Albert in a different light. 🙂

Thank you for giving us the direct translation for “a nice bride”. So meaningful and sweet of Albert to think that way! You can tell he was falling for her 🙂

    • Ms Puddle says:

Hola Evelyn! 🙂 Yes, slightly better, gracias!

So that’s the passage, thank you! I’ll find that too, but did Candy really say Albert was seductive!? 😛 Lol… But I agree with you that Candy saw Albert in a different light… At least she hadn’t realized he was a handsome man. In London, she said he was better looking without the beard or something like that I forgot. 😛

Back to this manga scene, yes, Albert definitely had feelings for Candy already. He saw her as a lady, not a little girl anymore (unlike before he lost his memory).
