Thank you my friend! Now I understand but something came up to my mind.

With whom Candy was talking to, so call him Anohito? The readers? hehehe… just my crazy mind!

Oh yes, the “goodbye” letter, hehehe 😛 looking forward to read about it… 😀

you know what? Now that I have to really ‘read’ the epilogue I began to analyze many many things, Candy recalls and recalls Albert’s and POTH’s SMILE and VOICE. Really, How people could miss this in the last part of the epilogue, trying to fit in another character as Anohito? grrr… Anyway, I’m happy with my decision.

    • Quevivacandy says:

oooppsss…. forgot to hit the reply button in my first comment… :p

    • Ms Puddle says:

Yes QuevivaCandy dear! I have the same question too, and I think Candy was talking to the readers, that’s us! 😀 Just like the ending song of Candy Candy, she referred to POTH as Anohito because the audience knew whom she was talking about. 😉

The goodbye letter… the more I read it the more I want to talk about it… please stay tuned. 🙂

About the epilogue, it’s crystal clear Anohito is no other man than Albert himself. Yes, some people are just so blind… Sigh! 😛

  4. Agnes says:

    Hello dear Ms Puddle,

Once more Ms Puddle your knowledge is priceless. I admire that! Thanks again!
So, for Dr Martin or Mr Brown, Albert could be “ano hito” while Terry is “Sono hito” ! 😉 Brilliant!!! 😀

The fact that all letters between C&A are in the epilogue speaks volume indeed, when you know what an epilogue is!
But I was wondering why Candy’s “mind” letter for Anthony is in the epilogue?
And I have the intuition she could have thought it when some troubles could have been set when Albert and her wanted to get married but they have encounter a strong opposition of Albert’s family. Therefore she was sad, maybe C&A even didn’t see each other for a while (pression on her, blackmail or so…) because of that. It is why she spoke of Rosemary and Vincent Brown’s difficulties to get married too with the same opposition of the clan. And her thought of “I have learnt there is a fate makes it impossible to see someone although the person is still alive” thus this sentence could be applies not only to Terry but to Albert too! What I meant that it is a possible explanation of the place of this “letter to Anthony” in the epilogue because related to C&A’story. Do you think it could fit the complex timeline of the novel? CCF’S is really a puzzle novel! Sigh…
I don’t know if I was clear, since I’m not an expert in CCF’S and I have difficulties to write today! 🙁
Any way It is only an interpretation of a crazy mind of mine! 😆

    • Ms Puddle says:

Dear Agnès! Yes, you get it!! 😀 Yeah!!!

To Dr. Martin or Mr. Brown, they can use “ano hito” (a pronoun) when they refer to Albert, but when they refer to Terry, they will use “sono hito” because they don’t know Terry. 😉

Of course, it’s just an example. Many of the letters were written by Candy, and the majority of them mentioned Albert, which clearly shows who occupied her mind. 😛

About epilogue, there’s a reason why it mainly consists of their correspondence! About the letter to Anthony, contrary to what some people think, Candy sounded positive and hopeful! After the trip to Lakewood, she could finally ‘talk’ to Anthony in her mind, which was a breakthrough. Who helped her? Albert. Who else? 😛

I’ll talk more about this last letter one day. At any rate, it proves to us readers that Candy had finally moved on with Albert, and that the biggest emotional hurdle (Anthony’s accident) had been overcome. Hope this helps, Agnès. 🙂

      • Agnès says:

Thank you Ms Puddle, you have perfectly helped me! 🙂
The problem is that I have only excerpts in English of Candy’s “mental” letter for Anthony! 🙄 And from them I had the impression Candy was sad in her recollections but thanks to your answer, Ms Puddle, I just remembered the touching scene you had so well describe in “The diary” of Albert and Candy on the spot of the accident of Anthony and now this letter in the epilogue makes more sense to me now. Once more Albert helped Candy to move on. 🙂 Ah Albert! Sigh…

        • Ms Puddle says:

You’re very welcome, dear Agnès! I’m glad to know that. 🙂

I have to read the letter to Anthony again to refresh my memory, but I strongly believe she told Anthony that she had gone to Lakewood with Albert right at the beginning. Besides, the way she wrote means that the trip had happened just recently.

Also, she used long paragraphs to describe Albert, his background and history plus details of his features (especially his blue eyes). If Candy had had no feelings for Albert, she wouldn’t have talked about him this much, don’t you think? 😉

About not seeing someone even though that someone is alive, Candy definitely meant Terry. That I’m sure. BTW, she didn’t even write his name. Why? No point of mentioning because he was in her past? I don’t know. But she seemed to believe Anthony knew (somehow).

          I guess I’ll stop here before I begin writing a post. 😉 😛

          • Evelyn says:

Hello Ms Puddle and Agnes! Very interesting discussion!!! Love it!! I have always understood the part about not seeing someone even though that someone is alive to be related to Terry because of all the several attempts that Candy makes to try to hook up with Terry but in the end her efforts were all in vain chasing after him to never be with him! Would you apply this to Albert? I wouldn’t think so unless this letter falls in a time period of separation between C&A and she seems anxious of her future with Albert. Candy was always physically together with Albert until he stated traveling as the head of the Ardley family, then they started their correspondence by mail.

I read a while back on another Albert/Candy blog that this letter to Anthony was Candy’s self therapy grieving and releasing her frustrations to Anthony as she realized that they (C&A) couldn’t be together due to strong opposition from Albert’s family as the were from two different social classes. I was wondering what are your thoughts on this, Ms Puddle?

Sorry about my late post on this blog. I’ve been out of town due to spring break with kids and family. Trying to catchy up 🙂

            • Ms Puddle says:

Hello dear Evelyn! Glad to hear that you had a wonderful spring break with your family!! Don’t worry, there’s not much to catch up because I’ve been very busy in real life too. 😉

Anthony’s letter is worth at least a few posts of discussions, but I’m pretty sure Candy wrote this mental letter soon after her trip to Lakewood with Albert. I’ll explain why later. 😉

About family oppositions, I don’t think Albert would let Candy suffer. He had enough power to choose his own wife, and for Heaven’s sake, they were adults by then. There was no need for anyone’s consent, only witnesses were required. What do you think, Evelyn? 😉

          • Evelyn says:

Dear Ms Puddle! Spring break was a nice break from the same daily routine for kids. I need a vacation from this vacation if you know what I mean. Glad you are staying busy on your end!! Being busy bees keeps us young!!! 😉

What you say reaffirms my opinion about Albert being his own person who would not allow or simply give-in to his family to interfere with his happiness with Candy. As you say, they were both adults and both were sort of rebels for their time who fought for what they believed!! And whatever opposition there was, as previously discussed, Candy was independent enough to fight for what she believed. The day she was fired from the hospital, at the house on Magnolia looking out the window of her apartment she said: “Whatever people may say, only our desires count…” Speaking of living together with Albert. 😀

You are correct that this letter was writen after her trip to Lakewood after having shared and released to Albert her grief she had been carrying in her heat about Anthony’s death. I look forward to your other posts about this letter to Anthony! 🙂

            • Ms Puddle says:

You reminded me of one of my friends, Evelyn dear. He said exactly the same thing, needing another vacation from his vacation 😉

Yes indeed! Staying busy keeps us young 😛

So glad you agree with me, my friend! You’re absolutely right that they were both rebels in different ways. The fact Albert had adopted Candy years ago proved that he had the guts to do something for sure his aunt would disapprove. 😉 It also shows that he had authority over his aunt.

The engagement of Archie and Annie was another example. In spite of all the oppositions from family and relatives, they finally submitted to the verdict of the powerful family patriarch. How could they possibly alter his heart’s desires? 😉

          • Evelyn says:

Awe! so sweet 🙂 Really, how could they possibly alter his heart’s desires!! The question I have is when did they finally get together as a couple? In CCFS, Candy is in her 30’s when she lives with Anohito. Some people say it took them 10 years to finally be a couple. Don’t know where they get that!? I haven’t read all the Spoilers, just the letters from the epilogue from the link you provided.

            • Ms Puddle says:

Exactly! 🙂 About the ten year waiting theory… sigh. 🙁 The basic idea was that A and C had to wait till after the economic crash to happen to be “equal” so that they could marry each other. Needless to say, I disagree. 🙁 It’s against their characters, waiting upon fate, and besides, neither of them could predict how long to wait… How did they know something disastrous would happen in time when the economy was booming (the roaring 20s)? Lastly, what kind of man was Albert if he let the woman he loved suffer this way… 🙁

          • Agnès says:

            Hello Ms Puddle and Evelyn!

Like you I’m deeply convinced that C&A ended married because Albert was ready to do everything for her even abandon his name, his wealth…, but I’m pretty sure they had encountered a strong opposition of the clan, not only Great aunt Elroy. Do you remember the plot against Albert when his dad has died? Another member wanted to become the patriarch of the family, I think he or they could have conspired once more, but at the end, of course, Albert has resolved the matter in a way or another! 🙂 And I completely agree with you that it didn’t take so much time! I can’t imagine Albert waiting; he is a man of action! Wait ten years, no way, Albert would have been 41 – 42 years old!!! 🙄 In the worst case, they could have moved abroad to get married where laws were different. In Europe, in some countries, marriage was a contract between two adult persons (more than 21 years for example in France, now it is only 18). I read somewhere (I don’t remember where) that in the US high society, marriage was a contract between two families in the beginning of the 20th century, do you know if it is true? Therefore, perhaps it could explain why they moved in England near Avon’s river? Do you know what I meant? 😉 Or perhaps it was because of the great economic depression of 1929-39, or to be near of their children while they studied at the Royal College of St Paul, so many possibilities, who knows? 😉

            • Ms Puddle says:

Bonjour Agnès! I agree with you totally that Albert was ready to abandon everything if necessary so that he could get together with Candy. That was why he brought up Rosemary’s struggles in the past. I will talk more when I write a new post about the mental letter to Anthony. There are so many things I can write, but I just don’t have the time… lol… please bear with me. 😛

Good point about the plot against Albert when his father had died, Agnès dear! But even then, I don’t think it would be threatening now that Albert was an adult and clearly capable of being the chief of the business empire. Like you, I can’t imagine Albert willing to wait ten years, and he wouldn’t possibly predict how long he had to wait to be “equal” with Candy. He wasn’t a passive man who relied on fate. As you said, he was a man of action.

Let’s be honest, even if he was willing to wait indefinitely, would his aunt make him wait years after years? Very unlikely. Back then, people married young because mortality rate was high, and being the only male descendant, his aunt would want him to produce a new heir as soon as possible, don’t you think? Not to mention that her health was deteriorating, and I suppose she would want to live to witness the birth of a new heir, right? 😉

As you said, there were many possibilities why Candy would move across the ocean with Anohito, either because of different laws or simply because of new business opportunities. Don’t know anything about marriages as contracts between families, but I did read somewhere that the economy in Britain and/or Europe was back to normal faster than that in America. 🙂

          • Evelyn says:

Good evening Ms Puddle and Agnès! I do agree with both of you that Candy and Albert did not wait 10 years to get married! Logically, I cannot imagine C&A waiting that long to be together when obviously they loved and missed each other. As you said Ms Puddle, this was out of character for them.

The only thing I can think of is that Albert’s job could have come, at some point, first before his personal life for a period of about 10 years. He did tell Candy soon after he broke off her engagement with Neil, when both of them were up on the tree, that he had to become more responsible since Aunt Elroy was older or getting older; he was speaking about the work ahead of him. When he traveled to Sao Paulo on one of his letters, he mentioned he must have his father’s blood because lately he enjoyed working. On another letter he mentioned that Georges gave him grief when he wanted to take a holiday as he had already taken all the holidays for his entire life or something like that? However, all this working could have happened right along with Candy by his side!! It doesn’t mean she stayed at Pony’s home during this entire decade. I have read on other not-so-accurate blogs that Albert invited Candy to travel with him? Is this accurate, Ms Puddle? I do not recall seeing this letter in the group of letters I read from the link you provided. In the event this is correct, this would show that they traveled together and would have started their life as a couple at some point. Either way, it doesn’t make sense for them to be apart. Also, they did have businesses in the UK as Albert himself mentioned to Candy in one of his letter so they do have ties to England.

You are absolutely right, Ms Puddle, that aunt Elroy would want Albert to produce an heir or male descendant to be able to carry on the family name!! That is why I feel that Albert and Candy could not have waited 10 years to marry because back then people married young, as you said. I believe there is a deeper significance to their move to the UK than it is shown on the surface. This could be the solution to their legal obstacles. It could have something to do with less strict marriage laws, or perhaps with getting around their legal adoptive status so they could legally be together, and of course to conduct the family business right there from England. This is just my deduction trying to connect the dots 🙂

            • Ms Puddle says:

Dear Evelyn, I agree with you that Albert took up family business and was serious about his role in the family, and that was why he didn’t make his important confession to Candy until after the great war (my personal estimate).

So only then Candy knew that Albert was Prince on the Hill. I do believe he was ready as long as she could accept him. 😉

Yes, Mizuki published a Candy Candy novel soon after the manga was complete. It was like a novelization of the manga version plus the correspondence between Candy and her prince. You can think of those letters as the sequel of the manga.

Years later Mizuki decided to rewrite this old novel and published it as CCFS. Things have changed here and there, and the correspondence between A and C were all compiled in the epilogue instead.

Anyway, back in the old novel, the last letter from Albert to Candy was his invitation to her about traveling with him in the near future. Her subsequent reply was the last letter in the novel, in which she eagerly said yes and something like “even if you say no I will follow you”.

That’s the end, and many people believed that was an implicit marriage proposal from Albert. ;). Too bad these two letters are not in CCFS, but the ones in CCFS are great too. 🙂

              Hope this helps, dear Evelyn.

          • Evelyn says:

Thank you my friend for your great explanation as always!! Need to better understand the timelines and history of previous version of the novel. I know the manga very well but I never read the old novel, the one written after the manga! This really helps organize my thoughts 😉 but we get a good feel of what Mizuki intended between C&A all along. 😀

            • Ms Puddle says:

So true, and in fact, it was clear Candy ended up with her prince for sure after reading the old novel. From the spoilers I read the letters had some overlap with the ones in CCFS epilogue. 🙂

          • Quevivacandy says:

Ding dong! hehehe…. Hi Anges, Evelyn and Ms Puddle, May I join you?

Well, there is not much to say ’cause you almost have said everything. I do not agree either that they have to wait for so long to be together. Yes, Albert had resposabilities as head of the family but it didnt meant they couldn’t become a couple. So now Ms Puddle, you agree with me POTH confession was after WWI? weee

I have more data the backup that. Remember CAndy’s letter to George? It was written after WWI and after the Miami X grand opening. There she told him she cannot help but tease Albert calling him Grandpa or treating him as an old person but what happens after the POTH confession? She stopped to do it after she read one of his letters. 😀 So that means POTH confession also happened after the Leagan’s party. If so, we are talking it was 1919. And what happened in that year? Candy turned 21, so there was no more marriage age restrictions in the U.S. I guess they traveled to UK for other reason like business or to live in peace.

And yes, I agree with all of you that Albert was ready to leave everything for Candy. He loved her soooo much as she loved him buuuut, We cannot deny he is a responsible man and already made up his mind to be head of the family and to fulfil with his duty. He know he had to do it so I don’t think he had left aside his roll in the family. It is true that in the past there was fuss when WCA died ’cause Albert was only 8 years old, and there is no other direct blooded heir named William and there was another member of the family that wanted to be the head. I definitely believe that some old members of the family and Aunt Elroy joined forces just to protect Albert’s rights and to avoid that member try to take his position. I know they are from Scotland but to be honest, I do not think that by time, they would had a board that dictated what to do and had more power than the patriarch. And again, when they joined forces was when Albert was still a boy, just to protect him but years later, he was already a grown man performing with authoroty his roll. No one could tell him what to do know so maybe yes, C&A may would find oposition to their relation but that doesn’t mean they would being separated, maybe just felt unconfortable but at the end of they day, they were together and not 10 years after! No way!

As MsPuddle said, the old novel and CCFS has a confusing change of the story timeline… grrr… right MsPuddle? and some things that happened in the old novel where changed in CCFS or are least they ‘happen’ but we do not read how, we have to read between lines.

About Candy’s letter to Anthony, I also believe it was written after their visit to Lakewood, even if I do not believe that, Candy writes that in the letter. She could write to Anthony after she got over her grief for Anthony. You know what other thing did I notice, Ms Puddle? Candy could write to Mr. Whitman after that too.

“I got your address a little while ago but it took a lot of time before I could take up my pen because … I was just overwhelmed by memories …”

What I understand from that, she couldn’t write to him before ’cause she had to write about Sweet Candy or Anthony. And when she got his address? Yes, after the ‘grand opening’.

Well, I better stop now or I will keep going… :p but that A&C got married before those 10 years, of course they did! 😀

            hugs to everyone!

            • Ms Puddle says:

Hola QuevivaCandy! You’re welcome to join us, anytime! 😉
Yes, after some discussions with you, I’m inclined to believe Albert had waited for Candy to ‘grow up’… heeheehee 😉
Why did they relocate to UK? There could be many reasons, but it’s unlikely that Terry would want to move there while he had been a successful actor in Broadway. This is my opinion of course. Off topic too. 😛
I totally agree with you about A and C not possibly waiting for ten years, simply out of their characters. Sigh.
I’m not very familiar with the old novel except the correspondence between A and C, which have some overlaps with those in CCFS epilogue. The timeline has changed too. In the old novel, A confessed on Pony’s Hill the day C went back to Pony’s Home, just like the manga. But you know this has changed in CCFS.
Right on, my friend, I also believe Candy wrote her letter to Mr Whitman after her trip to Lakewood with Albert. She said SweetCandy was blooming in her letter to Anthony too. 🙂 Great minds think alike, dear! Although I’m not sure why Candy said Lakewood had been closed… since when? Anthony’s accident? Or Stear’s funeral? I don’t know… wasn’t Albert there when Candy discovered his true identity. That’s a puzzlement, but we will take this offline, my friend. 😀

              Hugs to you too!

          • Quevivacandy says:

Maybe Lakewood was closed, after Stear’s memorial? That was the last time they were there before their trip to Lakewood and after that that gathering, Candy didn’t say a word about Lakewood had been closed and definitely it was wide open when Candy discovered his true identity.

Well, end of the subject… I better ‘stop my fingers’ or…. you know… hehehe :p

          • Evelyn says:

Wow Ms Puddle and Quevivacandy!!! Very interesting discussion about the timelines of when Candy turned 21 years and of Lakewood being closed. Now, how is Mr. Whitman? Can’t recall…Anthony’s dad?

Is there a link where I can read the old letters from the old novel? Thanks ladies 😀

            • Quevivacandy says:

              Hi Evelyn

Well, C&A correspondence in the old novel, you can find some of them here…

              https://www.facebook.com/CandyCandyFrases/notes

Also, you can go to albertfans group in yahoo. They have in their files all the letters from the old novel and from CCFS. You need to register over there.

And about Mr. Whitman, he was the gardener at Lakewood. Remember the old man in the anime, taking care of the flowers? He is the one who kept taking care the Sweet Candies after Anthony’s death.

Vincent Brown was Anthony’s dad. 😉

          • Evelyn says:

Thanks Quevivacandy!!! I’ll go there and register. Is this the link to the Albert fans blog to read old and new letters, right?
You are right about Mr. Whitman being the gardener, I remember now!! I knew Anthony’s dad’s last name was Brown but got confused. Thank you!!
¡Muchas gracias estimada amiga! Conoces mucho de la novela 😀

          • Evelyn says:

Thanks Ms Puddle and Quevivacandy!! 😉

            Hello Ladies,

Very interesting all that you said! Your knowledge about CCFS and the old novel is priceless! Thanks to you I begin to get it and understand the timeline better. By any chance have you link in English or French for the complete letters because I have only some excerpts?

Quevivacandy, you’re very welcome! And sorry for my belated answer!

            Big hugs 🙂

Well, I don’t know really well the novels but after a looong discussion with MsPuddle about CCFS timeline, we could have a better idea after almost have left bald. 🙂 didn’t we, my friend?

Thanks for the welcome, dear Agnes. I do not have a link in English or French but I know in Amour Eternus, in the last chapter, the author has them in English (but I don’t know if they are from the old novel or CCFS) Have you tried to type in google, Candy Candy letters from the old novel? hehehe, Well, at least in that way I found them in spanish. 😉

Many thanks for all your tips my dears but I thought the letters from “Amor aeternus” weren’t complete because of many (…) as they were excerpts. Unfortunately, I don’t understand Spanish ; only French, English and a little Russian! Perhaps I should learn it! 😀 And yes I tried to search on Google But I often found forums with registration but I have lack of time to do it and discuss everywhere, I prefer to stay here! 😉

Hello everyone! Agnès, unfortunately I have not found either any French translations of the new CCFS letters to share with you, but I’m sure they are out there as we found them in Spanish and English.

Quevivacandy, my understanding is that the letters from Amour Eternus, the last chapter, are the new letters from the CCFS novel. Also, to answer your question, no I do not speak Spanish all the time as perhaps you do? My family moved to the USA years ago and I speak English most of the time. However, I do live in Florida which is a state with a large Spanish speaking population mostly from Latin America but also from Spain, but the area where I live is mostly English speaking. I do have a few Spanish speaking friends from different countries and we try to always speak Spanish when possible. 🙂 It’s a little different and challenging when you have been uprooted and replanted in a different area. I try to always continue perfecting and studying my native language as much as I can! 😉 I really enjoy reading Ms Puddles stories in Spanish when available, and speaking to all of you when I can throughout my day. Hugs!! 😉

Antlay might know where to find the French version, and yes Evelyn, the ones in Amor Aeternus are spoilers from CCFS. Yet, they are pretty good translation even though some parts are missing. 🙂 At least they give you a general idea of the letters in section III.

I’ll continue to share what I know in CCFS, a little bit every time.

Nice to know that you speak Spanish whenever possible, Evelyn, especially living in an English speaking environment. I know a lady from Cuba who works as an interpreter sometimes. Her kid learns Spanish from her but refuses to speak. Sigh.

          • Evelyn says:

Yes I know exactly what you mean! I’m teaching my 2 kids Spanish also. They understand it very well but have a hard time speaking it. Hoping one day it will click! I too have a friend from Cuba and she has the same problem. Sigh!

Ms Puddle, thanks for confirming that the letters from Amor Aeternus is a reliable translation of the epilogue. They show emotion and expression which many other translations I’ve read do not show or they only show bits and pieces of a letter changing the entire meaning of it.

            • Ms Puddle says:

I guess it’s hard when the kids don’t see the need… 🙁 at least not yet at this age. However, it’s pretty good already if they understand the language very well. 🙂

Yes, the ones in Amor Aeternus are great, and I believe the translator is a native Japanese speaker. 🙂

          • Agnès says:

Once again thank you very much for your help much appreciated. I sincerely like our interaction and sharing my thoughts with you all from all over the world, it is great! 😀

Hey! You do not need to apologize. Your blog is so interesting and speaking about me, last month I felt like I have to hurry to catch up with it, lol…

Anyway, I cannot agree with you more! I have heard about the sections and those things, the ano, sono and kono but to be honest, I didn’t get it until now.

Even if I didn’t have any idea of the sections, for me is clear that the closest person in Candy’s life (more than Miss Pony and sister Lane) is Albert, (“ano”, right?) I will use to Annie and her friends “Sono” and for Terry, “kono”. Why, her friends are close to her but I can see she doesnt tell several things to them, their realtion is not that close and Terry, well, in the past she spoke with him but not in a personal personal level (at least from her side). She let him know some personal things but most part of their converstions were about thing they have shared together, plays, etc. Hmmm did I get the meaning of ‘sono’, ‘kono’ and ‘ano’ right? lol… hope so.

However, in section III as you say everything has to be with Albert (name him POTH or Uncle William), he is always present. We can see how close they are since she talks about him with everyone (is so normal to do this when you are in a relation with someone, out of the blue you end talking about this special person). The male character closest to her is Albert.

But the best part to me, is the epilogue. I’m glad to read you have written its definition. I really do not get it why “some people” still keeps saying anohito is Terry. An epilogue is an epilogue. Period. Few days ago we had to write down the definition of epilogue in a forum.

“Última parte de algunas obras, desligada en cierto modo de las anteriores, y en la cual se representa una acción o se refieren sucesos que son consecuencia de la acción principal o están relacionados con ella. Indica el futuro de los personajes principales después del final.”

“Last part of some dramas, somehow detached from the first ones, and in which an action is represented or relates events that result from the main action or are related to it. Indicates the future of the main characters after the end.”

Well, in CCFS epilogue, I mainly read about Candy and Albert, everything is about them. He and She are the main characters. Even if we have more information about her future, this doesn’t change the epilogue, the final.

Hope I could had explained myself. 😀

    • Ms Puddle says:

Thank you my dear QuevivaCandy. I know this kono, sono and ano is very confusing, and I tried to use a diagram to illustrate. Most of the time it means distance from the speaker and the listener, but sometimes it’s about familiarity rather than distance. After reading your comment, I quickly modified my post to clarify things. Thank you dear! Now I hope you will understand it a bit more.

In Section III of CCFS, since Candy and others talked about Albert, both the senders and the recipients of the letters knew who Albert was (like when Candy wrote to Dr. Martin), so technically whoever wrote the corresponding reply could refer to Albert as “ano hito”.

On the other hand, if Candy wrote to someone outside the circle, like when she wrote to Dr. Frank about how to treat an amnesiac patient, then in Dr. Frank’s reply he would refer to Albert as “sono hito” (because the doctor didn’t personally know Albert).

You can think of “ano hito” and “sono hito” as gender neutral pronouns, like he or she, him or her (depending on contexts). Does it make sense to you now?

But I totally agree with you that the closest male character to Candy in Section III is Albert, no doubt. Like you, I think Candy sounded very different in her unsent letter to Terry when compared to the way she wrote to Albert in the epilogue, which was so much more familiar. Well, her letter to Terry, as you always call it, is after all a “goodbye” letter. 😀 Your idea is simply brilliant!!

If I have time, I will write some more about this “goodbye” letter. 🙂
