This is meant to clarify what I said in my previous post. I used the young actor, Brenton Thwaites, only to give you a real life example of what a grown-up man, who is 25 years old and 1.87m tall, can actually look very boyish. I also replaced the tiny picture I used earlier with a bigger one to show you what he looks like in another movie.
I wasn’t saying that Brenton Thwaites was my ideal Albert. In fact, I still haven’t been able to find any male actor or model that matches the character Albert of Candy Candy in my imagination. From your comments though, I got several recommendations of who else can be considered as casting candidates. Below I list a picture of each of these handsome young men in their twenties, and please feel free to provide pictures to us of your ideal Albert. 😀
Note: Travis Fimmel (the guy in the middle) is older now, and I can’t seem to find a nice picture of him (when he was younger) with clothes. 😛
Anyway, my point is how could a young lady like Candy resist the charms of her handsome roommate, who was very loving and caring? She had always liked him, and after he had vanished in her life, she missed him badly and remembered him very fondly. In the manga, whenever Candy reminisced her time with Albert, we saw his tenderness towards her. To me, by then, they were more than friends, or at least we readers had never seen Candy yearn for any man like that before.
I found an article “Are you more than friends or just friends?” that lists the signs that indicate “two friends can have so many happy things in common that a simple friendship could turn into something a lot more complex over time”.
Recently, I’m re-reading “Daddy-Long-Legs” by Jean Webster. It’s a well known fact that the author of Candy Candy, Mizuki, was inspired by this classic novel.
(SPOILER ALERT) Guess what I found near the end when the main heroine Judy confessed that she was in love with Master Jervie? She said this in her letter to her “Daddy”:
“… I miss him, and miss him, and miss him. The whole world seems empty and aching. I hate the moonlight because it’s beautiful and he isn’t here to see it with me…”
Does this sound very familiar to you? Sounds like Candy missing Albert, right? Judy wrote this letter after roughly two months of not having heard anything from Master Jervie. She didn’t know her “Daddy” was actually Master Jervie himself. I wonder how he reacted when reading this “love” letter from his beloved Judy. 😉
I’ll talk more about “Daddy-Long-Legs” later. Please stay tuned.
