Memories of Famous Scenes

Happy Valentine’s Day to you! 💘 To my Chinese readers, happy lunar new year of Ox! 🐮 My original plan was to draw something romantic this February, but unfortunately I have lost my mood (or muse) 😑, as explained in my previous post. Yet, I’d like to express my utmost appreciation for all the support and encouraging feedback I have received. Thank you very much! 🥰

In addition, many thanks to my friend CandyAlbert for sharing the following pages (possibly inserts?) she had found from the Nakayoshi magazine. The title is “Memories of Candy (Candy) famous scenes”. When reading from the left to the right, the four male characters at the top happen to be Candy’s loves in the chronological order. Do you think this was intentional? 😉

In the bottom left corner, Candy asked, “Do you remember my first encounters with these male characters in Candy (Candy)?” Right beside her shows Pony’s Home on the map, locating near the southern tip of Michigan Lake.

There’s a bubble pointing at Pony’s Home with Candy’s words, “I wonder how Jimmy and the others are doing on Pony’s Hill?” If you move your eyes slightly at the north-east direction, do you see another red dot near the lake shore? That’s Lakewood. The last red dot by the east coast of the continent is New York, where Candy boarded the ocean liner for the voyage across the Atlantic Ocean (the Japanese word right below the ocean liner is Mauretania). The destination was Port of Southampton (the south coast of England). Candy was going to study at St. Paul’s Academy in the city of London. A bubble is pointing at London with Candy’s words, “Blue River Zoo is also here, where Albert-san is.”

Let me translate the captions of the other images (with a bit paraphrasing), starting with Prince on the Hill in the first row.

Prince on the Hill – when I was crying on the hill, he comforted me by playing that bagpipe, but I do not know his name or his current whereabouts.

Anthony – I love Anthony very much. We first met by the Ardlay’s rose gate. He said “You’re prettier when you smile”, exactly the same as what my prince had said to me. I thought without a doubt that my prince had appeared. Now, what are you doing above the sky, Anthony…

Terrence – he was crying on the deck of the ocean liner when she was heading towards England, and yet he brazenly rebelled against that scaa~ary Sister Gray. Terry’s heart was in fact filled with loneliness…

Albert-san – he rescued me when I ended up drowning in the waterfall after I had rushed out of the Lagan’s house. At first I thought he was a bad guy, and I fainted again.

Archie – as his boat was drifting away I saved him by throwing a lasso, which I’m good at.

Stear – my first date with him was (going for) a drive.

The bottom row on the right page lists the characters surrounding Candy. (1) Miss Pony and Sister Lane: the teachers at Pony’s Home. They are my mothers. (2) Neal and Eliza: the mean siblings of the Lagans (3) Great Aunt Elroy: she is intimidating and very difficult to deal with. (4) Annie and Patty: though they are weak, they are gentle, my important close friends. (5) Granduncle William: I haven’t met him before. He’s a mysterious figure.

I have a feeling these pages were published when the story took place in London, likely when Candy started to fall for Terry after she had reconciled with Annie. What do you think? Note that Candy did not use past tense when she said she loved Anthony very much. She also used the same adjective 怖い for both Sister Gray (Candy even stressed this adjective by elongating one of the syllables) and Great Aunt Elroy. 😛

Thanks for reading this post. If you find any mistake or have any question, please feel free to leave a comment. Hope to hear from you soon. 🙂

After publishing this new post on my Facebook page, Ivannia Diaz kindly left a comment telling me that she had found it in the last Mandarake Auction. It had lots of Candy Candy items, and apparently, what I shared above was an appendix to the Nakayoshi magazine published in October 1976. You can see the item here. In case this will be taken down later, I copied it to display it here. Thank you Ivannia Diaz!

CandyAlbert did share the leftmost page with me, where you can see Candy standing on the left hand side. The title is “Manga Newspaper”. It was primarily some news about Candy Candy and some information about the main character Candy (like her body measurements, etc.), the illustrator and the author (birthdays and personal data). If you are interested about this page as well I will share it in a different post. 🙂
