    Hello Ms Puddle

Bonjour Antlay my dear friend! 🙂 I’m so glad you like this post. It’s undeniable Candy had got over Terry by the time she wrote that letter to him. She was content just to be a fan cheering for him from a remote place. She used to love him, yes, but gone was the girl who cried for his attention amidst the crazy fans. They had shared some great times together, but she wasn’t nostalgic nor did she shed tears over that.

Candy indubitably suffered the well-known symptoms of being head over heels for someone truly special, her Prince on the Hill. 😀 I don’t know why some people refuse to see it. 🙄

Like you, Antlay, when I first read CCFS excerpts, it was so obvious what Mizuki had in mind when writing the last scene — Anohito coming home. It’s essentially equivalent to the manga ending, and Candy was elated, running towards her prince’s outstretched arms for sure. 🙂 😀

    Hi, Ms Puddle!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. You are preaching to the choir!

How lucky was Candy to find her first love and it was her truest love! William Albert Aldrey! Not everyone is as lucky as her!

We all go through different types of love and Ms Mizuki did show that –
    1) Prince on the Hill- fantasy/dream of having a prince sweep you off your feet and live a happy ending! Unattainable! Impossible! Not real!

    2) Teenage love or Puppy love- Anthony – Candy was attracted to his looks and the fact that he is the image of her Prince. It started shallow based on looks. A crush that turned into young love. New, innocent! Unfortunately, he died and she experienced a broken heart and guilt for she thought she was to be blamed for his untimely demise. It was plain and simple an accident.

    3) Rebellious love- Terry- Candy is now an Aldrey. She has to follow and become a true lady for she is representing a very wealthy and prominent family. She was into Terry for he is good looking, dangerous, seductive, mysterious! Women unfortunately are drawn to these type. He is exciting and unknown. I think that is why there are a lot who are Terry shippers. Romance is being dangerous and bad! Boring are Mr. Nice guys! It is just how some or maybe a lot of women are wired. I just say to that- Respect each and everyone’s opinions. Or maybe they have read too many Harlequin books! Hehehe!
During that time period, Candy can’t be helped being so into him when she is going thru the repressive nature of the present society. She wanted to rebel herself. Be the one to create her own destiny. It was probably so stifling!
As in the movie Dirty Dancing, ” no one puts Baby in the corner!” (Rambling! Sorry!)
But Terry was selfish and broken. His first love is acting! He didn’t have a stable family environment. First sign of maturity- when he talked to Sister Grey and took all the blame and defended Candy’s honor but he left for New York. Why didn’t he tell Candy if he has feelings for her? She was left hanging!
And he grew up somewhat when he chose Susanna. He was so indecisive. Again, he left Candy hanging. He could have said something when she just got off the train! It was a weak moment for him as far as I’m concerned.
I’ve dated an actor when I was in my 20’s – handsome, tall, sexy as hell but is the most insecure guy I’ve ever met. I won’t be surprised that even though Terry admonished Susanna’s attentions, he was also flattered. He needed to feel loved and be loved because he never felt it from his own parents. Sad but he was still really a kid in my opinion.

Heartbreaking line- Promise me, be happy! I cried when I saw the anime. Never read the manga. You are helping me understand it though. Thank you again for that!
I consider their relationship where Candy gives and gives – she followed him from England to the USA. She did everything to see him in Hamlet. She cared a lot about his health – smoking bad! Drinking bad! She encouraged him to pursue his dream of acting. She made him realize that his mom really loves him. She accepted when he chose Susanna even though it hurts like hell! Candy helped him BE the Terry!
And Terry takes and takes – he loved Candy in his own “Terry” way. He sent Candy a one-way ticket to NY. He made the decision for her. She will give up her life in Chicago. She will be in NY to support and be with him. Did he ever think what would Candy like? How presumptuous of him that she will stay with him! This is the “Terry” love. Candy was gone. He was stuck with Susanna but he went in a “woe is me” mode! He resorted to drinking and bombing in his acting career. 3 people got hurt in that winter night but he only thought of himself losing Candy. And the rest happened and he grew UP finally and took charge of his acting career. He realized later on that he still have feelings for Candy when he wrote the letter to her after Susanna’s death- but why didn’t he come to Pony home? Too busy working? I would move heaven and earth to find and see my love- and get an answer whether it would be a new beginning with us or a closure so I can say I can move on now- won’t you?
This last one made me realize that Candy is the stronger one between the two of them.
    Why? I go to …..

    4) Anohito – the love you chose
Subconsciously, Candy knows she has Albert. She doesn’t know that she is in love with him though. But c’mon, they lived together like a couple even though they pretended to be siblings. They did everything together. They saw each other in their worst appearances like having just woken up. They were there for each other. They were like an old married couple.
Favorite scene- sharing of the sandwich. Aaaahh! It was so,touching and so revealing of Albert’s feelings for Candy.
Albert epitomized the saying- if you really love someone, then let him/her go. All he wants is for Candy to be happy. I never thought of him as a father figure for Candy. He is too good looking and there are too many hugs exchanged between them. I have guy friends but I don’t hug them all the time! Hmmm… Would love to get hugs from the one I love. I love my dad but I don’t hug him when I’m talking about my relationships. 😍😜
But the best part is Candy without realizing had reciprocated what Albert is/was doing for her. She took care of him to the extent that her reputation was tainted! During that era, wow! That was ballsy of her! She was brave and focussed on one thing- help Albert because he was amnesiac.
They brought out the worst and best in each other. They both grew up and got even closer without realizing it. There was trust and respect. Gentleness and tenderness abound. What wasn’t shown was the physical attraction- the lust in the relationship. Maybe that’s why they thought Albert is just a father figure. (Terry fans). It was a “safe” relationship. That’s where you come in to add the sexual tension between the two along with the other fanfic writers. Thank you for all your creativities. Much appreciated!
But the awesome part was it became a full circle for Candy because Albert turned out to be the Prince on the Hill! Candy was able to have her cake and eat it , too! 😍😜

Thank you for letting me ramble! Please don’t stop! You write love stories of one of my fave couples- Candy and Albert.
I just am here to wait patiently and read and imagine.

    Memchew

    • Ms Puddle says:

      Hello there, Memchew, 🙂

Thank you so much for your long comment, which summarized Candy’s three stages of love very well. You have brilliant insights, and I mostly agree with you except the part where you said Albert and Candy lived like an old married couple. 😉 To me, they lived like brother (protective) and sister (dependent). Though you’re absolutely right that they hugged too much to be siblings. 😛

May I quote your comment in a new post?

      • Memchew says:

        Hello, Ms Puddle

Thanks for reading my (OMG!) extensive writings. I love that we are having discussions.
I understand your take on my “old married couple” situation for Albert and Candy. I guess I’m coming from the experience of roommates’ takes (personal and hearsays) – remember I’ve only seen the anime- cooking, setting the table or waiting for the other one so they can eat together ( one small example that was shown in the anime) – was not a common occurrence with roommates, siblings too- not as consistent. Hahahah! They just loved to be together and do things together.
I’m flattered that you find anything useful from my thoughtful musings. Please feel free to pull out any scrappy idea from my insights. I’ve been known as the ” Dear Abby” in my college days- I tend to be the logical person in my group. I always tell my friends or even strangers that take or get what they think fits them from my advices or counsels. I’m not perfect. I just tend to see all views. Helped me and is still helping me in my own life. 😅😋

        Have a good day!

        Memchew

        • Ms Puddle says:

First, thanks for your permission, Memchew! 🙂 As I said, I like your insights. I sometimes borrow others’ comments to show that I’m not the only one who think that Albert is the destined love for Candy whereas Terry was but a chapter in her past.

I used to live with roommates too, and at a period of time I actually lived with a brother and sister. I rented a room in the house but ate dinner with them. We shared the cost and cleaned up together. But of course we never talked about anything too deep or personal, unlike Candy and Albert 😆 It was fun living with roommates when each of us was so different. 😉

You have a good day too! 🙂

    • Reeka says:

      Dear Memchew, .. Hi!

Agree with Ms Puddle. I found your insights are brilliant! Particularly on point 3, about Terry. You speak what most I have in mind. True that girls on their adolescence age love bad boys. Bad boys could vary from simply having long hair when school requires neat and short; having tattoo; smoking, to the extent of getting drunk and being destructive. Even now in my matured age, I still found them attractive. Yet, we don’t want them for permanent.

Likewise to Candy. And I got your point here, that Candy herself was also in her rebellious stage. She was in her transition from being a free child to be a fine young lady. And she sympathised this broken rebel boy. We couldn’t deny though that Igarashi portrayed Terry so well that we love seeing our heroine to get romance with him.

I once said here that I think Terry got most benefit from this Terry-Candy relationship. She’s like an angel sent to fix him. Like everything you’ve said here, Memchew, that Candy helped Terry to be the true Terry. Helping him realise what he wanted most in his life ( too bad it’s acting, not Candy), and mend his relationship with his mother.

With Albert, rather than a relationship full of drama, Candy and Albert shared intimate moments subtly. Actually, don’t we all also experience these in our life? I’m lucky to experience all those stages, it really helps me finding Albert-Candy’s love story really makes sense. It ends just the way it should be.

For Albert though, I found that he actually once showed his “sexual tension” to Candy, in a very very delicate way. Remember the moment he found Candy crying over news about Terry hidden by Albert, and Albert carried her to the bed? He almost kissed her at that moment. His expression and his gazing showed it. But yeah …. it seems not enough, right? So we’re lucky to have some wonderful fanfic writers here.

You should read all Ms Puddle’s stories, Memchew! And also Quevivacandy’s and Candy Bert’s. They’re still on going.

      Have a nice weekend!

      • Ms Puddle says:

Thank you for your detailed analysis, Reeka! Well said, and bravo to you, my friend! 🙂 Thanks for your compliments of my stories too. 😀

Memchew hasn’t yet read the manga I believe, right, Memchew? If so, you miss a lot. 😉 Albert fans tend to prefer the manga version mainly because Igarashi has done a much better job than those anime artists. Plus, they’re more intimate in the manga.

        Have a great weekend! 🙂

      • Candy Bert says:

        Hello Reeka!

Thank you very much for having mentioned my story! :D❤

I agree with you all ladies,Terry got most benefit from their relationship than Candy who gave so much more than him. And it was Candy who always was running behind him from London to New York. It was different between Candy and Albert, they both helped each other, in sort their relationship was more “fair” and in total harmony.❤

      • Memchew says:

Wow! I am so in deep humility that you have taken time to read my thoughtful musings.

Reeka, thank you! I will start reading based on your recommendations. The frustration comes when I want to read a fanfic but is in a foreign language (alas, I’m limited to the English language- wished I didn’t drop the Spanish subject in my college days!)- Google gets lost in the translation. 😁😜
Have you written any? I will look it up!

Ms Puddle, you are so lucky to have read the manga. Aaah! Is there an English version? Can I buy somewhere?

In general, due to having “more time” due to recovering from surgeries – my curiosity of looking up for the Candy Candy anime made me come across “accidentally” via my researching online a short fanfic , A Sweet Candy by forever and then saw It Must Have Been Love by Ms Puddle- my love for the couple (after finishing the 115 episodes via YouTube while reading subtitles and deducing that Albert is the man for Candy and disappointment with the weird and seemed to be truncated/rushed ending as in I said ” what the …!) – made me want to know, learn, get as much about this manga! I think you can say it is bordering on an obsession! 😅😜. But my love for reading came back- I’ve been so busy with work, family, my passion for doing theater that reading was put in the back shelf.
Thank you to Ms Puddle, Forever- they started it for this new addiction to come out of me- I have to have my Candy/Albert fix. Hahahaha!

        Candybert,
I am presently reading yours regarding the invisible Red threads – patiently having Google translate- my closest to understanding French was playing one in a musical and I had to do all my lines with a French accent and speak and sing in French ! 😜

Have a good weekend to all of you! As I always say, you are all preaching to the choir – ME!

        Memchew

        • Candy Bert says:

          Hello Memchew!
I hope you have completely recovered from your surgery!
Thanks for your interest, I hope you will enjoy my story even translated with google. 😀
So you were playing in a musical, that’s great! I like musical.

        • Evelyn says:

Hello Memchew and dear ladies!!! Memchew, like you now, about a year ago I remembered this wonderful story from my childhood and started researching it. I watched the anime and just knew the anime was not telling the whole story and had to find more about this story. Then I learned about the manga and read it! As Ms Puddle and everyone else here can tell you, it’s a much better representation of this story! If you are able to deduct from the anime whom Candy is destined to end up with, you will definitely clearly see it in the manga! I see Quevivacandy left you a link, I just wanted to share with you the one I’ve used also in English. http://www.anymanga.mobi/candy-candy/001/
Hope it works for you. I think I read you have some knowledge of Spanish? If you could, I would also consider reading this manga in Spanish with the aid of google translator as I feel the English translation is not as accurate as either the French or Spanish one that I know of. Of course the original Japanese version is the most accurate but most of us do not speak it or understand it but we are soooo fortunate to have someone as Ms Puddle to impart her knowledge of the language with the rest of us 😉😃❤!! really!!! If you go between these translations you will get a much better understanding of what Mizuki, the writer, wanted to trully communicate to her readers! And understand the true relationship between Albert and Candy!
Here is the link to the Spanish volumes: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B2HuxcntE9w9WUZrVjhDWlRxb0E&usp=sharing
When opening the PDF, try to download each volume instead of reading right from the PDF because it doesn’t load correctly. If you have an apple product you can open under iBooks and save your copy there.

Quick question for Quevivacandy!! Remember a while back you gave me the link to read CCFS spoilers in Spanish? I never got around to create my account and start reading this material. Been trying to go back and find our old posts to get it but can’t find it and haven’t had enough time to keep looking. Would you be able to share it with me once more? Sorry to ask again my friend!! 😛😊 really appreciate it!

Yes, totally agree that we have so much talent of different amazing writers here!! And, yes you can say that we all are a bit addicted with this wonderful love story of Candy and Albert!! Lol!

          • Quevivacandy says:

            Hola Evelyn!

Sorry my friend for had written in Spanish, is easier to me.

          • Evelyn says:

Hola Quevivacandy!!

          • Evelyn says:

Vale! Muchísimas gracias Quevivacandy!! Si, ese mismo es! Iré pronto a crear cuenta. Mil gracias! 😘

          • Memchew says:

            Hi, Candybert,
I love your present story. I technically got so affected when Candy left Albert to protect him. It was heartbreaking! I can’t wait for the next.

            Hi, Quevivacandy,
Thank you for the link. I will surely check on this. I love about your sister! I think we all go through that rebellious stage in life because we are looking. Like sample-tasting! 😜. Not everyone is fortunate to find their truest love that can bring the best in them at the worst of times. Some go thru life still looking. I believe that one can achieve this when they truly know who they are ( their most innermost selves – whether it is good or bad ) and can accept and love themselves.

            Hi, Evelyn,
Thanks for the Spanish link, too. Very little Spanish but I kinda get the gist if I read something for a million times. Hehehee! 😜😀

            Hi, Reeka,
Sexual tension! OMG! I have to bite my lip from screaming while reading stuff about Albert and Candy. My heart just melts! I just let my imagination run wild. Yup! Albert us a master of subtlety. I think women undeniable gets drawn to that but sometimes it gets confusing. I’m glad we are in the era that women are allowed to be more vocal and demonstrative.

            Ms Puddle,
You have a wonderful group of ladies! Kudos to you for bringing them in the circle of Albert/Candy ones session!
            😉😜😁
Thank God that I was patient researching and I found Ms Puddlegum’ s works (AKA Ms Puddle)

            Have a wonderful week, ladies!

            Memchew

            • Ms Puddle says:

Thank you Memchew! Yes my old pen name was Ms Puddleglum :). Glad you found my works and this blog. I truly enjoy reading all the wonderful comments and insights from the talented CC fans out there :), and it’s my honor that you ladies help keeping my blog active! Appreciate you all. 😀 ❤❤

        • Reeka says:

Hahahaha, I feel you, Memchew. I too use translator machine, & yes, it’s frustrating. However, you’ll get used to. Now it becomes my new-found skill to organise the unstructured lines translated and guess what it means. LOL 😀 😀 Some stories are worth the trouble, I may say. For the non english stories, you can sort Albert fanfics by the reviews and read the most reviewed ones.

No, unfortunately I don’t write fanfics. Let the experts do the job. 🙂 Oh and for the english story, you should read Amour Aeternus, Memchew! It’s one of the best written CA fanfics.

So you haven’t read the manga? Well, if watching the anime only already made you this head over heels to Albert, I’m fascinated to see the impact of reading manga and understanding CCFS to you. 🙂

      • Quevivacandy says:

        Hello Ladies!

Thank you Reeka for your compliments about me as a ‘writer’… oh my, I’m certainly not… you made me blush.

Well said Memchew! Indeed, as MsPuddle said, I really liked your insights! and welcome to our world, lol… I think we all are a little bit obsess about Candy Candy, right girls? Oh well, I declare myself an obsess Candyfan 😛

Like you, around 2 years ago, I only have watched the anime and always had the same reaction with that ending. I had watched it when I was a little girl and then a teenager, but when I watched the anime as an adult, I had the feeling Candy and Albert ended up together. I began my own research and found the manga. I read it all in ONE day but it helped me a lot to understand things that the anime had left me scratching my head.

Here, there is a page where you can read the manga online in English but I’m not sure if it is complete.
        http://mangafox.me/manga/candy_candy/

With CCFS spoilers, you can see how they fit in the manga and sometimes the manga helps you to understand better CCFS.

About Terry, you all made me think in my sister. She loves Terry because all the reasons you said, bad boy image, long hair, rebellious, etc. And like you Reeka, I’m still found them attractive but certainly I wouldn’t choose them as a partner. I guess at the end that was Mizuki’s intention when she talks about 3 loves. And about my sister, even she knows Albert is Anohito, she still likes Terry. My sister is a rebellious soul.

        • Ms Puddle says:

Hello wonderful ladies!! I’m so glad to read comments from all of you talented people, and Memchew, welcome to join us anytime and share your opinions with us. We are all in the same boat, the obsessed Candy-Albert fans lol! Wish you a speedy recovery too! About the manga version, too bad there is not an official copy in English, but at least you get an idea of what you’re missing from the anime version.

QuevivaCandy: of course you’re a writer, and don’t be too modest, my friend! 😉

          • Quevivacandy says:

Thanks my friend, but I really do not consider myself a writer. I still have a lot to learn about it. 🙂

  3. Vera García says:

    An affectionate greeting Ms. Puddle

Have a great weekend, her friend Vera.

    • Ms Puddle says:

      Hola Vera mi amiga! 🙂

Thanks for your encouraging words, Vera! I think in the manga it’s clear Candy had developed some strong feelings for Albert during his absence. But when they reunited, he turned out to be her legal guardian. It must be shocking. However, the fact that Albert confessed being her Prince on the Hill speaks volumes. He had feelings for her too.

I totally agree with you that the story CCFS begins with the important encounter on Pony’s Hill. Many things have happened since then, but Albert’s confession in the same season and at the same location years later shows that he was ready to enter courtship with Candy. Thus, he opened up in his letters. Sigh… 🙂 They had been special to each other, and their deep friendship had evolved into romance over the years. 😀

You have a wonderful weekend too, my friend!
      Saludos!! ❤❤

    Hello Ms Puddle

How could i have missed this great post? I love it. There are a lot of people out there who think Albert is only a father figure in candy’s life, they couldn’t be more wrong. My dear Albert is anohito and im sure of it. I don’t have the books of CCFS so i try to look for translations everywhere (I do not speak japanese or italian) and your blog has been of great help.

Is this the last post? If it is, I have to say, you did an amazing job 🙂

As always it is a pleasure reading your updates. Have a good night and greeting from Ontario.

    • Ms Puddle says:

Hello kittenandley, greetings from Vancouver! 🙂

I agree with you. Albert was never a father figure to Candy. He was once like a big brother to her, but both of them had changed over time.

Yes, this post concludes the long series. Thanks for your kind words, kittenandley! 😀 Have a nice day!

  5. Luna says:

    Hello dear Ms Puddle,

Thank you very much for this post. It is really a good job which is one more time clarifying why Anohito should be Albert instead of Terry. Indeed, Everything must change and this is also true for Candy. What I understand from her relation with Albert is hidden in this reality. She changed, Albert also changed and as a result they really learnt how they could reveal their real feelings.

As everyone knows, Albert ,In the beginning ,wasn’t the person who could easily talk about his inner world. ..and for Candy, we can also say that she wasn’t a person who could easily talk about her feelings either. (Due to this besides other reasons ,actually , in my opinion, she lost Terry. She didn’t say her love , her feelings and at the end Terry chose Susanna. He wasn’t sure about Candy s feelings and this helped him to break up instead of finding an another solution)

As we see, the relation between Candy and Albert isn’t a simple one. Contrary it is a real real love, a very strong relation in which both of them well understood that they should be more open if they want to be together and with letters, with Albert s confession , we understand how they were working to make stronger their love step by step. Nothing is hidden and this is not same with Terry. ( he didn’t say the accident, he didn’t talk about Candy till Susanna s confession, etc).

And it is very logic being with Prince at the end instead of being with one who left her twice or who does not see her love. Albert really did a lot for her, he cared a lot for her and when he confessed that he was Prince of the Hill, he actually confessed his feelings, his love courageously. And due to this Candy couldn’t sleep. I fond that The way of confession is very strong and it also indicates that Albert was very sure about her feelings as well. So in my opinion due to this she couldn’t sleep. She understood well he was knowing her love, fée longs, thoughts to him and he just found a very romantic way instead of coming with a ring to propose her.( even if he comes with a ring, in any case, she would accept). Just he made this propose very special for both of them…

    Greetings,❤️

    • Ms Puddle says:

      Bonjour Luna! Merci! 🙂

Glad you like this post and find it convincing! Yes, it makes more sense to me that POTH was the man for Candy, or else there’s no need to write so much about him in CCFS. 😉

Interesting thoughts about Candy losing Terry partly due to her discomfort of revealing her feelings to him. I think she wanted to do so, more than once, but Mizuki made Candy miss Terry again and again. Most of her letters didn’t reach him either (because of Susanna). Yet, Terry had his own fault too I must say. He should know Candy’s feelings for him. Anyway, just my two cents. 😉

I agree with you about Albert’s willingness to confide in Candy, beginning with his confession on Pony’s Hill. Since then, he had opened up more and more about his inner thoughts and growing pain. You’re absolutely right, Luna. Terry hadn’t written anything serious to Candy. She complained about precisely that — Terry had mostly teased her in his letters, and she wished he had written some romantic letters.

My sentiments exactly, Luna, that Albert’s confession as POTH was essentially his love confession to Candy in a very romantic way. I bet he had sensed her feelings for him too, just as you have pointed out, Luna. 🙂 That’s exactly what my short fic Peculiar Relationship is about. 😉

      Hugs! ❤❤

  6. Evelyn says:

Oh Ms Puddle, what a great post! This scene is one of my favorite ones in the manga the way Albert stares at Candy with eyes of love! I couldn’t agree with you more that Mizuki uses the epilogue to show us that both Albert and Candy have fallen in love with each other, indeed!! Candy’s excitement is undoubtedly because she is in love with Albert! I have two brothers and certainly love them very much and if I haven’t seen them for a while I would get excited but a much different type of excited! I would probably ask them about their own girlfriends and what they are doing nowadays 😉 The chemistry between Candy and Albert during their correspondences is much different than between siblings. For one thing, there is playfulness in their conversations with a touch of flirt with each other, specially Candy who is pouring her heart out to Albert with excitement and anticipation! Likewise Albert, he is letting her know that she is special to him and he wants to spend as much time with her as possible whenever he gets a moment. He made her birthday special. She cast a spell on him because she desperately wants his presence! Like you said, my friend, Candy is acting like a girl in love who feels she can demand his presence upon her request. Albert’s confession is so important because he goes out of his way to reveal to Candy that he is her fist childhood crush and that he has been with her all along! 😀 Again, as you said, if Albert saw Candy as a sister, he would have never made this very intimate confession if he didn’t see her as the woman whom he is attracted to! To me it is quite clear what is going on between the two of them 😉

    • Ms Puddle says:

      Dear Evelyn!! Hola!

Glad you like this post, my friend! This scene is definitely one of my favorites too. Both Albert and Candy are so happy, their eyes gazing at each other with joy and feelings. Sigh…

Thanks for sharing your real life experience with us about brotherly love. Can’t agree with you more! It’s a different kind of love and excitement.

In CCFS Mizuki took care of this issue by letting Candy realize that Albert was special, somewhat different from family, and Albert openly said to her that he didn’t want people to think she was his sister. Besides, Albert was undoubtedly upset of being called an adoptive father. That’s enough evidence that their relationship was more than family.

Yes, to me it’s quite clear that Albert and Candy had romantic feelings for each other. Other than occasional flirting, I see Albert being frank and sentimental to a young lady, pouring his heart out to her. She sensed that she was definitely special to him. Before, it was always her who had confided in him, but in his letters after the confession she had become his confidante too. It shows that she had his trust. I’ll talk more about this one day. 🙂

      • Evelyn says:

Hola Dear Ms Puddle! You explain it so perfect. You are absolutely correct that Albert did not want people to think that Candy was his sister and became upset or annoyed of the thought of being called adoptive father to her! I love the part when he says that he did it to himself! 🙂 So clear here of his inner struggle just by the mere thought of his legal relationship with Candy, which apparently they had not yet annulled at this stage.

Also, thank you for pointing out that Albert had also found a confidant in Candy as well! We only see the opposite with Albert having Candy’s trust. However, Albert was indeed honest and sentimental sharing his most private details on his own life with this special young woman. I think Mizuki was so clever to allow Albert to share this very private and personal nick-name with Candy that only his beloved sister used to call him. This shows a deeper lever of intimacy and Candy immediately realizes how special this is for them and thanks him for allowing her to call him by this name that I bet no one else knew except perhaps Georges! 😀 I’ll be looking forward to hear more about what you have to say about Candy having Albert’s trust!! 😉

        • Ms Puddle says:

Thanks Evelyn!! For sure Albert didn’t see Candy as his sister or daughter!

Yup, Albert sounded sincere and vulnerable in his writing don’t you think? I know some people didn’t like the name Little Bert, but it wasn’t the name itself that matters but the implications, right? 🙂

          Hugs! ❤

          • Evelyn says:

You know, Ms Puddle? I was just thinking about the nick name Little Bert! I personally do not have any problems with it. I think is cute! 🙂 but you know how some personal names have diminutives? At least in Spanish we do for just about anything but in English there are a few names such as Pat, its corresponding diminutive is Patty, or Charles = Charley, Candice=Candy, James=Jimmy, John=Johny and so on…. To use diminutives is a sign of affection or endearment. Some names are harder than others to give it a diminutive such as Albert which reduced to Bert is already endearing, but if you continue to try to use a diminutive the only way to say it would be Berty or Little Bert. It’s really just an endearing way of calling someone’s name! I don’t see why some people would have a problem with Little Bert! 😀

            Hugs back to you!!! 😉

            • Ms Puddle says:

Hola Evelyn, I can’t agree with you more, my friend!

I don’t know why some people are turned off by the cute nickname, especially it was an endearing name given by Rosemary to her baby brother. When I imagine a powerful man, the president of a business empire, giving a young lady the privilege to call him “Little Bert”, I can tell how much he was in love with her. They were equal, and she was highly special to him. The original word of “Little” holds connotations of being cute, tiny, little, etc. Hence, Candy’s eagerness to call him Little Bert speaks volumes too. 😀

          • Reeka says:

Count me in, girls! I too think the nick name Little Bert was very cute and lovely. A name used only on their private moments. And I agree with Ms Puddle, a man so powerful as WAA told a young woman to call him with such nick name, is obviously revealing how significant she was to him. Even “Albert” was already quite intimate that we know only Candy called him that (I’m not sure if Archie-Annie-Patty would still call him Albert in public.) And yet, Albert wanted Candy to call him in a more intimate manner. 🙂 sigh.

And why I always remember Ms Puddle’s LNF special chapter whenever I talk about this nick name 🙂 LOL.

            • Ms Puddle says:

Yes indeed. Albert would rather be called Little Bert than Prince on the Hill says a lot about their intimacy. Candy was surely more special to him than anyone.

              My chapter?? Which one… 😉 😛 😆

          • Evelyn says:

Yes dear Reeka and Ms Puddle!! Little Bert is a wonderful nick name! A very intimate and personal name that Albert allowed Candy to call him! No one else had this type of trust or insight with him. Even his nephews called him with such respect or his aunt by his first name William. As you say, Ms Puddle, Candy was more special to him than anyone else!! 😀 😛 😉

  7. Reeka says:

You know, my friend … it’s been more than a year since my first encounter with CCFS and the more I read and discuss it, the more I think there’s nothing more perfect to end this story than the way Mizuki did to CCFS. Of course, in our ideal world, we would love Albert’s name written instead of Anohito. But all of us here know we don’t need it anymore because we perfectly know he was indeed William Albert Ardley.

I love the way you closed this series ( I assume this is the last part of The Day Her Life Changed?). Yes, it’s a full circle. And I repeat again what I’ve told many times, Candy Candy is not simply a story of a little girl finding her true love, her prince. No. Since beginning, Albert and Candy evenly share the stage. It is a story about a girl and a boy tied by the red string of fate, finding their ways to each other. And right now, just thinking about how beautiful it is, I feel like crying.

I used to be bothered to see/read aggressive comments/arguments from T fans. But recently I found I am not anymore. It’s their loss if they don’t want to open their eyes and accept the obvious fact.

Their letters on the epilogue. Sigh. I could read it over and over again. Clearly, Candy was a woman in love there. She’s more matured now, we sense that from the way she’s flirting with Albert. She’s not shy to show it to Albert. Telling him she can’t sleep and feel like floating because of the events they experienced together, casting a spell and demanding his full attention, and wishing him the most wonderful dream (while she herself couldn’t sleep). Well, I certainly won’t act those ways to the man I have no romantic feeling with. And obviously Mizuki didn’t make Candy act like that to other men before Albert.

With Love and Gratitude. Those who think it’s a bit formal to say this to a love interest ( they said it’s more suited for someone you respect, like a parent), think again! It was 1918-1919. What’s more, it’s perfectly fit the content of the letter where Candy stated her happiness lies in here, in now. In other word, her happiness was Albert. And she’s grateful for the fact she fell in love with the man who apparently was also the boy she met on the hills many many years ago. And to me, it’s great that we have respect to the one we love. Doesn’t it what people suggest to those who’s getting married? To respect each other.

Last, the ending of CCFS. I am with Quevivacandy and Candy Bert. Give someone neutral to read it, she must know who that person whose outstretched arms Candy ran into :). Look at those last paragraphs. Why Mizuki described Anohito so detailed with remarks of how his smile and his voice was. Although the novel was intended to be puzzled, but I believe Mizuki wouldn’t mislead her readers to Albert if Anohito was not Albert.

And this quote from Ms Pony. “we don’t know what awaits us behind the bend”. Who was the one who constantly awaited her behind the “bend” ? 🙂

Thank you, Ms Puddle. This series overall is beautifully written, detailed, makes sense, and easy to understand. Kudos to you!

    • Ms Puddle says:

Dear Reeka, yes this post concludes the series. Thanks for your compliments and encouraging words! I totally agree with you that it wasn’t just a story of Candy, consider all the details Mizuki gave us readers about Albert’s person and growing pain. He’s definitely the second most important character.

Like you, to me CCFS is no longer a puzzled novel. The hints mostly favor Albert, and Susanna’s obituary and Terry’s ambiguous letter were but only two significant hints. River Avon, Shakespeare collection and daffodils were not very convincing to me.

The letters in the epilogue are beautifully written, so emotional and touching. They were courting each other through writing, as some of you have mentioned before. Candy wasn’t shy at all, except for her first letter to her prince. 😉 After that, she was back to her normal self, cheerful, playful and lively, sometimes even flirting with Albert. You’re absolutely right, Reeka, that Candy didn’t usually do that to others.

With love and gratitude… The entire letter is filled with love, devotion, respect, admiration, happiness, and gratitude to Albert, her Little Bert, Prince on the Hill, her benefactor, the very man who vowed to put her happiness as his priority. Sigh… Yes, indeed, he was always there for Candy, supporting and loving her.

The ending of CCFS epilogue is such a loud and obvious hint that I don’t need to add anything more to what you have already said.

      • Reeka says:

Yes, my friend. River Avon and shakespeare collection are arguable. Obviously Albert’s origins was Scottish and it’s mentioned he had been in London to start new business. Come to think of it, why Mizuki added this information on CCFS? Not that readers desperately need to know the reason Albert was in London when Candy studied in St Paul, yes? 🙂

And shakespeare collection. Hah. The first sign of shakespeare in Candy Candy story came from Uncle William. The Romeo and Juliet costumes. Back then, a collection of shakespeare was like a must-have thing in one’s library. Especially those rich people. It’s as common as now many people have a complete series of Harry Potter novels. 🙂

        • Ms Puddle says:

Very good points, Reeka! I share your sentiments, 100%! 😀 About Shakespeare collection, it’s almost like decorations in a rich household. The owner doesn’t have to know Shakespeare’s works by heart. 🙂

        • Quevivacandy says:

          Hello there!

Indeed, great minds think alike! lol… What you both just said, is what I always say about Shakespeare collection. Back then, rich families always have Shakespeare’s colletion and all kind of Literature. If I’m not mistaken, DLL has it himself. It was the basis for their literature knowledge.

About Avon River, I guess there are at least 3 Avon’s River in the United Kingdom and I guess, CCFS doesn’t say they live in London but the United Kingdom. It is only a supposition they live in London, since Anohito found Slim’s paint in London but the thruth is, we cannot ensure that.

  8. Quevivacandy says:

    Hello my friend!

Oh, well, you must already know I read your post with a smile on my face. 😉 What you wrote is the whole truth.

I always have hearded that manga’s writers use to write stories in circles, and that is exactly what Candy Candy is. Yes, I know the novel is not a manga but it is based on a manga so the plot has to be same. I really cannot understand how some people think, the circle is closed with Terry. If so, then the story begins almost in the middle of the novel and not in the prologue. XD

Anyway, by the time of the epilogue, Candy already got over Terry, the non sent letter proves it and of course it was sent way before they began their correspondece, that’s my interpretation. And because of that, she moved on her life, discovering she was now in love with her dear friend, Albert, who happened to be, her legal guardian, uncle William and her prince. Isn’t it marvelous?

You know what? about Candy not being able to sleep in the last letter, I didn’t dig in this time, First, I didn’t want to repeat my self, lol… but anyhow, I think she cannot sleep because she was just written. In other words, she just confessed Albert she was greatful for being an orphan so she could met him. She told him, he is her happiness and also, used the word ‘love’ to sign the letter. I guess she was so excited about she was just did it and wondering how will be his reaction. Also, by that time, I sense she already knew Albert feelings and knew he must be anxious to know her decision and after giving him an answer, she knew she will ease his mind and heart.

About 2 days ago I was pondering about the ending of the manga. Apparently Albert says, ‘I love your smile… never forget to smile… Candy, I shall never forget you’ but guess what? hahaha… We cannot see any of this in the novel, at least not related with Albert. I don’t know, but a thougth crossed my mind… Anthony’s words… those are the words that Anthony tells her in CCFS (or better say, that she believes to heard) and following those words, she says (paraphrasing) ‘I’m happy, don’t you see my smile? because I live with the person I love’. In manga we see her running towards Albert outstreched arms. sigh… I’m in love, lol….

And the end of the epilogue, it is crystal clear about whom she is talking. You cannot put in another person that doesn’t even once in the whole epilogue. Another hint of Mizuki’s intentions? 😀

As always, great post my friend!

    • Ms Puddle says:

Hola mi amiga! Like you, I’m just pointing out the obvious facts in CCFS. 😉

Some people claimed that Mizuki had changed her mind in writing CCFS, that Candy’s destined love was not Albert anymore. I’ve written seven posts in this series to prove that they can’t be more wrong. Mizuki had stuck to her original plot, and POTH is still Candy’s destined love in life. ❤❤❤ Terry was an important episode in her life, but that was it.

Good point about the unsent letter being written way before Albert’s confession on Pony’s Hill. By then, Candy’s mindset had changed and was secretly in love with her guardian. After the confession, she was ecstatic beyond words because her feelings had been reciprocated.

Yes QuevivaCandy, I’ve written a post earlier why Candy couldn’t sleep. Great minds think alike again, my dear!! Candy had been absolutely honest with Albert in her writing, declaring her commitment and love to him. Of course she wouldn’t be able to sleep, wondering how her prince would react. 😉

About the ending of the manga version, there was a translation error. I think in the original version, Albert said smiles really suit Candy, and that she should never forget to smile. I don’t remember his exact wording, but I can check it for you. 🙂

Brilliant! Candy told Anthony that she constantly wore a smile on her face because she lived with the one she loved! 😀

About Anohito, Mizuki had made sure not to mention Terry at all in the entire epilogue except when talking about Candy’s diary, which Candy decided not to open and give it to Albert again. I don’t understand why some people still believed the one who came home to Candy at the end was Terry. He was so out of place!!! Lol… 😉

  9. Candy Bert says:

    Hello Ms Puddle!

What a pleasant post, it has increased my mood! It fills my heart with joy, many thanks, my friend! 😀 ❤

Indubitably, Candy was “suffering” of all symptoms of a woman in love! 😆 When she described her state it seems to me she was like she has taken some drugs! Good emotions like love product endorphins after all! 😆

If she wasn’t in love with Albert, she would never cast a spell on POTH, no way because she would have felt uneasy after his revelation because she talked all about her POTH to Albert so he knew her feelings about her Prince. Therefore, Albert himself would have never revealed her he was POTH if he had not at least a hint she was in love with him. My sentiment is Albert waited to be sure of her strong feelings for him before have making his confidence, either he would never have told her and he would have kept the secret for him to avoid awkwardness between them. It’s obvious for me.
And the end of CCFS is like in manga with “oustretched arms” and it is a big hint too! ❤

    • Ms Puddle says:

      Bonjour Candy Bert!

I’m so glad this post made you happy! That’s encouraging! ❤❤

Yes indeed Candy suffered all known symptoms of being in love. 😉 I don’t know why some people refuse to see it this way. 🙄

Casting a spell on POTH is really cute. 😀 It shows that Candy was totally comfortable with Albert being her prince and she couldn’t wait to see him again. She was in love already, and she knew he had feelings for her too. 🙂

I can’t agree with you more, my friend, about Albert’s decision to confess. If there wasn’t even a hint that Candy had special feelings for him, he wouldn’t have revealed this secret at all. She didn’t need to know, and he could keep this secret to himself forever. 😉 😛
