Candy’s first letter to Prince on the Hill

The way Albert revealed himself as Prince on the Hill was very different in Candy Candy Final Story (CCFS). Personally, I like the one in the manga version much more. If I have time in the near future, I will explain my preference by comparing them. This time, I will only focus on the one in the manga novelization (the old Candy Candy novel). Please note that the following excerpts of Candy’s letter are directly from the spoiler.

When Albert repeated his line, “You’re prettier when you smile than when you cry”, it implies that he had not forgotten his first encounter with that little crybaby, just like Candy had never forgotten her prince.  She must have been shocked, but she readily accepted her prince had been Albert all along.

Then the manga ends at the moment when Candy sprinted towards her prince’s waiting arms, both wearing ecstatic grins on their faces. Yet we don’t know what happened after that. Did they embrace each other or what?

Throughout the manga, Candy and Albert had shared numerous hugs, so naturally this should happen after Candy found out that Albert was essentially the grown up version of that handsome teenager dressed in a kilt, her first crush.

I have imagined their reunion as follows when writing my short story, “It must have been love” (

I had never forgotten about Prince on the Hill, and how could I not love that sweet smile on his face? The radiance of his smile was as warm as the sun rays, and it was so inviting that I threw myself onto him, wrapping my arms around his torso and nuzzling my head onto his chest.

My voice broke on a happy sob. “Albert, oh Albert! I didn’t know…”

“Candy…” His voice was hoarse with emotion too.

When I felt Albert hugging me so tightly as if he didn’t want to let me go, my body quivered with euphoria and my heart beat furiously within my ribcage. I felt so content being in the protecting circle of his arms once more as I had terribly missed his loving hug, especially after all these months of longing to be close to him again. His warm body, his strong heartbeat and his familiar scent told me that this was real.

The next thing I knew, Albert lifted my feet off the ground and spun me around, laughing in jubilance. I joined in his laughter nearly right away. I felt so happy for the first time in a long while.

Unfortunately, I believe their hug didn’t last very long. According to her first letter to her prince in the old novel, Candy complained that he had to leave in a hurry because George had come to pick him up.

‘… Prince on the Hill, you left immediately, leaving me just surprised. I heard that some urgent business matters came up… I was so disappointed to see George having come to pick you up that I couldn’t help glaring at him a little bit…’

Also, after her prince had left, she went back to join her friends at Pony’s Home. She probably looked like she was in a trance, so everyone was concerned, asking her, “What’s happened” or “What’s wrong?”. She didn’t explain herself because it seems to me that none of them knew about this little secret of hers (although she had told Albert when he had been amnesiac). Candy then wrote to Albert in her letter that ‘I didn’t know how I could tell them properly… and I also felt that it was too precious to just tell them… ‘

So that means that it was a precious secret between Candy and Albert only. How cute! In fact, since the moment she had found out her prince’s identity, ‘I feel somewhere in my body quivering with emotion.’ Besides, she couldn’t get rid of the feeling that she had been dreaming. She was worried that when she woke up the next day things would turn out to be merely illusions.

Do you think that Candy found that Albert having come all the way despite his busy schedule just to tell her who he actually was had been too good to be true? Not to mention the impact her new discovery had on her. She said in her letter that ‘I have been looking at the stars until now. I feel so happy for the first time in a long while… Would you please keep your promise for sure to come again and stay longer?…. I am longing to see you again at the earliest possible date…’

Didn’t she sound like a girl in love? Is that why she decided to write a letter to her prince? Below shows my drawing of Candy writing that letter to Albert but got lost in dreamy thoughts.

  1. Dear Ms. Puddle, I read again your post after a long time and this time I went through it very carefully. Indeed, this is a different letter from Candy’s first letter in CCFS. I must say it is far better. There are a lot of interesting things in the old novel’s letter that are omitted in the new one’s. Of course the meaning is still the same, Candy is definitely in love with her prince, we can see that clearly in both letters. However, there are some very touching sentences from the old novel’s letter you have shared here with us, and I thank you very much for that.
First, Candy mentions that she was so disappointed when George came to pick up Albert that she couldn’t help glaring at him a little… That means a lot, because we know how much Candy liked George, how much she appreciated him and how grateful she was to him for everything he had done for her, especially for sending her to Lakewood that memorable day to meet her guardian. She knew how devoted and kind George was, and yet at that time he was not a welcome sight to her. That hadn’t anything to do with George as a person, but the fact that he came to take Albert away from her made Candy disapprove of his presence. I suppose anyone who would come at that moment to interrupt them would seem unwelcome to Candy, no matter how dear that person was to her in general. That is typical of people in love. When they want to be with the person they love, any other person around is unnecessary and unwanted. Candy had just discovered her prince’s real identity, and yet before she even had enough time to recover from that shock and talk with him, there comes George and takes him away. You can imagine how she felt.
Then the other sentence you quote, where Candy says: “I didn’t know how I could tell them properly…and I also felt that it was too precious to just tell them…” This sentence should be in CCFS Epilogue too. It is very significant and speaks volumes. Candy was talking about her friends and teachers, persons very dear to her, but she couldn’t confide to them such a precious secret as that about her prince. However, she had talked to Albert about that when he was amnesiac. Doesn’t that mean he was special to her even then? In CCFS, Section 1, Chapter 3, which I have translated in English, there is that sentence: “But she couldn’t tell anyone about the Prince, not even her beloved Sister Lane: that was her most precious secret.” Even the persons who had brought her up and loved her like her mothers couldn’t share this with her. Albert was the only one except Anthony to know about the prince. Come to think of it, Anthony must have been special to her too, since she had talked to him about that Scottish boy. Or had she done that just because he reminded her so much of him? I wonder…Anyway, it is very sweet and tender for two people to share something between them that they don’t want anyone else to know about. That indicates that these two people are bound together by a strong bond. In most cases that must be love.
The last sentence you quoted is the most beautiful and crucial, I think. A big mistake for Mizuki to omit it in the new novel. Candy is looking at the stars feeling so happy for the first time in a long while. She is asking him to keep his promise to come again and stay longer. She is longing to see him again at the earliest possible date. Now that is very similar to her last letter to Albert from the old CC novel, and we don’t need to get to that last letter to understand. Even in this first letter it is crystal clear she is in love. How nice it would be to read that in the new novel too. It would make the perfect ending to her first letter.
I think it would be a very interesting idea if we could compare each letter from the Epilogue of the old novel with the letters in CCFS and see their differences and similarities. Just as Candy’s last letter from the old novel about which you posted recently, her first letter too contains some important sentences that could enhance even more this beautiful love story.

…And suddenly a question pop up in my head…what´s the end in CC novel of 1978? what would be the difference with CCFS? Both novels share the mystery? Is this novel available in English??

Dear Ms. Puddle: these days I´ve been searching on internet looking for more information about CCFS, many pieces of the puzzle still missing and I´m trying to find them with no success. In a Blog about Manga, I think that the person who writes it lives in Asia and has a different point of view, making a very good analysis about our beloved freckled Girl. Even though the blogger has a crush with Terry´s Character, It´s capable to understand and recognize the importance of Albert and his shared destiny with Candy. This is the link if you or your readers want to take a look:

You really have captured your analysis of Candy’s first letter to her Prince in this drawing. Excellent job! 😀
Candy sounds very much like a girl in love. I also think it’s really cute for her and Albert to have their precious secret.

    1. Thank you CKati dear! Yes, Candy’s writing shows that she was in love with Albert, with whom she had shared her precious little secret without knowing that he was actually her prince. In CCFS, she even complained why Albert hadn’t spoken up earlier 😉

Everything that said in the letter is all true. She is indeed in love with her prince since from the beginning she met him, not knowing he was the same person she shared the apartment with. And your drawing of Candy is like an Angel.

Mind if I add her image in the album of the page?

      1. What? Are you sure it was from me? 😉 Just kidding. 😛

    1. Thank you for your encouragement! Yes, Candy Candy is really a story of Candy and her prince. 😀

Yes you can add this drawing to your page as long as you provide a link back to this post. Thanks! ^_^

        Thank you.

Also thank you for providing a perfect romantic concept in your story that satisfy us ‘AlCan’ fans which Mizuki failed to add it in manga rather than to write it on so-called ‘final story’…. forgive me for ranting… but i just disagree for what she wrote at the ending of her new novel… anyway, thanks again.

        1. You’re welcome. Thanks for asking first. 😀

No joke. Candy does look like an angel here. Lucky Albert when he had amnesia back then.

        1. Thanks again! Lucky Albert for winning her heart ^_^

oh my dear you’re so good !!!
simple magnificent !!! am totally agree with you speaking of those two lovers 🙂
they we’re in love from the beginning to ending of the history.
As she explained in her letter to Albert .. * oh Albert am thankful to God because I knew you Albert , not sadness at all in her life , she was happy with her new life and specially because Albert was part of her life ! her life was complete.
    Albert ,her complement …of course he was…always was… !!!
ones again great drawing , color and so mature …just beautiful !
thanks for sharing you’re wonderful and talent work with us !!!

    1. Yes, Ana!! The first time I read this letter from the spoiler I got tears in my eyes! It is an evidence that Candy had strong feelings for Albert, and that’s why she looked extremely happy running to her prince at the end of the manga! Likewise, Albert loved her too! Otherwise, he should have kept this secret forever because her Prince on the Hill was actually her first crush! ^_^ Hence, he came all the way to Pony’s Home to confess! 😀

    2. Also, thank you! I’m so glad you like my drawing! 🙂

You came to a perfect and clear conclusion 🙂 and it’s so obvious when Candy says “ was too precious to just tell them”.. That’s it:)

    1. Oh yes!! She’s in love with her prince!! 😀

    2. Forgot to say that Candy really acted like she was love struck! That’s why she couldn’t just tell her friends her feelings, but she wrote to Albert instead! 😉
