“If you love somebody, let them go…”
“If you love somebody, let them go, for if they return, they were always yours. If they don’t, they never were.” ― Kahlil Gibran
For those of you who have read my short story, “It must have been love”, you might have remembered this was my theme.
In the last two volumes of the manga, we can see that Candy and Albert began to develop a deeper affection for each other beyond what they had had when he had first suffered from amnesia. The evidences are everywhere in the story, including the sandwich sharing scene, which I would discuss in my next post. In any case, the relationship between them was no longer merely friends or brother and sister near the end of the story.
For example, when Albert recovered, the first image that came to his mind was a smiling Candy, and that says a lot. He remembered who she really was, so he struggled, lying by the river bank for who knows how long. Being the only male descendant in his clan, he didn’t think twice before he used his own body to protect Candy from the ferocious lion. Unlike the anime, in the manga the lion pounced on Candy alone, and in a split second Albert squeezed in between them to shield her from the attack. Note that the lion actually pierced his left arm and chest near his heart. Thereafter, Candy shed silent tears, fully aware that Albert could have been killed because of her.
Later, Candy learned that Albert had lied to her about working at the zoo. She was clearly upset but kept her mouth shut rather than confronting him. When her neighbors accused Albert of being a gangster months later, she defended him vehemently and decided to leave the apartment with him. She trusted that he was not a bad guy, but at the same time it shows that she was afraid of losing him.
Then after Albert had disappeared and confessed to Candy in his departing letter that he couldn’t let her know earlier about his recovery (which implied that he had wanted to stay living with her), she broke down and cried. In the following months, gone was the cheerful young lady who used to be full of life and vigor. Nobody can deny that Candy missed Albert terribly after he had vanished in her life, and I have already mentioned in my previous posts how the Rockstown incident (the significant episode only in the manga but not in the anime adaptation) conveys that, so I won’t repeat myself here.
Later, thanks to Neil’s imposed marriage and George’s disobedience, they finally reunited. Albert must have been astonished that Candy suddenly walked in, disturbing his solitude. On the other hand, Candy was more than shocked to discover that the man she had been pining for turned out to be her benefactor — the “old” man she had been dreaming to meet in person.
After they both calmed down, they spent an amiable time alone in Lakewood for the rest of that day, that night and the next day. But neither said anything to each other about their inner feelings. Interestingly, though Albert later returned to Chicago, Candy didn’t reside in the mansion with him. She was his adoptive daughter, and he had admitted that in front of every guest in the engagement party, but why didn’t he invite her to live with him? Or is it possible that he had asked but she refused?
Then one day (how many days had elapsed since the engagement party?), Candy made up her mind to return to Pony’s Home. When Albert agreed with her decision, she didn’t look very happy. She was aware that she would miss him.
Some people argue that Candy was too naive or that she didn’t love Albert as a man at that point but only missed his companionship. I don’t think so however. She had gone through a lot in her life already, losing her loved ones twice. It doesn’t make sense to me that she was still too ignorant to understand what loving a man meant. How else can one explain why she yearned to see his face again if it wasn’t love? She might not have realized the extent of her tenderness for Albert until she had lost him, and she probably repressed her true feelings toward him after knowing his real identity, but her affection for him was unmistakable, especially from the way she interacted with him after he had successfully annulled her forced engagement with Neil.
That was when my imagination kicked in. I knew there must be more happening in their minds during those days than what was shown in the manga. I have a feeling that both Albert and Candy had sacrificed their own happiness for each other. In other words, they were in love, but they both let each other go.
Yet, Albert took the first step at long last. He went to Pony’s Hill ahead of Candy to reveal one last secret. He was actually her Prince on the Hill. To me, that was his love confession to her. It’s unclear how much time had passed since Candy bid Albert goodbye, telling him that she was leaving Chicago, but we know he had deliberately kept this last secret from her even after she had discovered his identity, so what exactly pushed him to disclose the truth?
At any rate, Candy was undoubtedly ecstatic to find out who her prince was after all this time. He was the man who had always been there for her since her first heartbreak in life (her best friend Annie had left her). That is exactly how the manga ended. The main heroine, Candy, was back to her first love, a full circle.
In an attempt to fill in all the blanks, I was inspired to write “It must have been love” last year. I would like to express my appreciation to those who have read it and/or left reviews for me. But if you haven’t read it yet, you can find it in

Note: I got the image above from the colored, Greek manga version.
I enjoy you because of all your effort on this web site. Ellie delights in carrying out investigation and it is obvious why. Most of us know all of the compelling mode you convey simple things through this web blog and even invigorate contribution from others on that area so our favorite simple princess has been learning a lot. Enjoy the remaining portion of the year. You have been doing a splendid job.
Thank you very much for your feedback! I hope to see you around and hear from you more! 🙂
If you love them, let them go, and they will come back to you eventually, that’s true. There’s always a place for second time, or maybe many times.
Thanks for reading my post! 🙂
Good points. What if Albert never recovered his memory and yet Neil would force Candy into marrying him? And then got his memory back after the marriage, would that pain Albert so?
Good imagination! Are you writing a fanfic? 😉
Is it too late to picket against Mizuki for being such a coward? 😉
Now I can see why I prefer the other mangas / animes than CC because they’ve CLEAR ending without a 2nd thought. :- /
I’ve met few friends in school who study Lit, and they shared their opinions that CC did stay with Albert, considering of the proofs of his personal stuff that always mention in the novel. I wish those Terry fans should wake and realize that.
Thank you for writing this, Ms Puddleglum
I’m sure Candy Candy is not the only story with open ending, and yet I actually think it is quite clear with whom Candy ended up in the manga. It’s just that we want to know more 😉
hah! The problem is “quite clear” is another word for argument, confusion and ambiguity. I was doing art with my daughter today and that made me compare Candy Candy’s endings to Mona Lisa (not necessarily the artistic merits). We know Mona Lisa is smiling, but the trick is “is she really smiling”…. it does look like she is smiling but at whom and for what? Maybe she is smirking only? or that is only a bitter curve of her mouth?… maybe Mizuki wants to create such a dilemma for generations to be bewildered? Whoever has a brain knows Candy ends up with Albert (or that Mona Lisa is smiling), but the open ending leaves hope for the ardent bad-boy love, which, let us admit it, is intoxicating. You know hope can be dangerous in some situations such as this… haha…..
lol at mojoqueen’s last paragraph
Can’t argue with that, but true. Having annoying debates with fans of different side do give me a headache sometimes 🙂
Same here, Ms Puddleglum, I want more of Albert and Candy scenes after Albert revealed to be her childhood prince :- /
That’s why we have fanfictions LOL 😉
Hi MQ, I must say your analogy to Mona Lisa’s smile made me laugh non-stop! 😀 Talking about the danger of false hope, CCFS is much worse than the manga. At least in the manga we see that Candy’s feelings for Terry were no longer the same at the end, and time and distance had indeed pulled them apart.
Hey MPG, if you dont mind repeating something you probably have written tons of times… why CCFS is worse than the Manga? summary of points is fine… I am eager to know. Thanks!
This nosey, little kitty “me” is curious too. 😉
I’m thinking of talking about CCFS, MQ, but I want to talk more about the manga first before diving into that world. Please remind me again, ok? 😉
Of course! when should I remind you? Tomorrow?? jk jk….. 🙂 I thought CCFS makes up for some lost moments between Albert and Candy and creates a smoother relationship transition….so my assumption must be wrong then….
Hi MQ, I meant in terms of false hope. Of course we got to see a lot more interaction between Albert and Candy in CCFS, especially their personal letters in the epilogue. However, she has also added new things to appease a certain group of fans. :/
I wouldn’t mind if they made a sequel of Candy Candy in anime version, only this time… is how their (Candy and Albert ) relationship develops until they get married. I’m with you on this and I dislike the ending of the anime.
Honestly… I don’t know if this will ever happen… 😉 I meant a new anime 😛
Albert is really destined with Candy. He had met her from the beginning of the story until the end.
Good theory!
That’s right! Thank you for reading my post. 🙂
Absolutely cannot agree more! That is fate, destined and true love that Albert and Candy display here. Now we all know the reason why there are ardent Terry fans is because of the not-so-subtle feud between the manga artist and the author… Albert-Candy relationship has indeed been misrepresented in the anime version.
Thanks for writing all these…. 🙂
Hi MQ, it’s true that some Terry fans have only watched the anime adaptation of the manga, which made Terry appear more significant in the story. The fact that Candy had lost him actually led her to her true love, namely Albert. However, this wasn’t clear in the anime version at all, which is very unfortunate as we have discussed before. 🙁
Therefore we should blame Yumiko Igarashi for all the pain and anguish felt by fans and the author Kyoko Mizuki alike!
Plus the anime script writers and/or editors LOL! 😉
Mizuki should have screened them before letting those people damage her work. Or, she should let her manga editor, who is her dear friend, handle the anime editing and production…. that would have been 1000 times better than what we have …
Were you people a bit upset for what the Italians did with the ending of the anime? That sure made Mizuki really angry. I can’t forget the part where the newspaper said Terry broke up with Susana 🙁
Hi Albertfanatix, personally watching the anime again makes me angry enough, no need to seek out more stupidity from the Italians…. 🙂 LOL….. Terry breaking up with Susanna makes even less sense than Terry ending up with Candy. He was tied to that responsibility against his emotions. I don’t know about the 1930s, but what makes more sense is Terry can financially support Susanna without being “with” her. That would have solved all the problems if he had guts and is a person true to himself. But that is another topic. No, in short, anything less than Albert ending up with Candy is just catering to Terry’s bad boy love fans.
If Mizuki hadn’t killed Susana off in her novel and got married with Terry, would that please us albertfans and gave us hope on seeing more of Candy and Albert scenes? Still… even if Susana gone, Mizuki couldn’t be honest on the clear ending. And yes, when I saw the ending made by Italians, I barfed, lol
That leads me to believe Mizuki yielded to the Terry fans (their force is strong) and created a quagmire for everybody in CCFS…..
Thank you both for all the comments! Glad that my post has triggered you somehow! 😉
it’s the image the brought me here 😀 😉
in respons to Mojoqueen and Albertfanatix:
In defence of the Terry-fans, I would like to say that I do understand them. As a young girl I only saw the first 52 episodes of the anime. The rest just wasn’t broadcasted in Dutch. Of those 52 two episodes we taped the ones that took place at Saint Pauls Academy and Scotland and these episodes contained a lot of Terry. I think that the last episodes are about Terry leaving for America and Candy following him. So for about 25 years I have assumed that they would eventually find each other and live happily ever after. Until the beginning of this year I didn’t even know that there was a manga, I only knew the anime.
I was shocked when I read the first Candy-Albert fic, which was actually ‘It must have been love’ written by Ms Puddleglum. After reading the manga and whatever else is available on the internet, I am convinced that Albert is Candy’s ultimate love. Even though I have come to love Candy and Albert as a couple, I still cannot get rid of the idea of Terry and Candy together. So I can imagine (and understand) that others also still hold on to this.
I am afraid I am one of the very few who enjoy both kind of fics.
I hope I haven’t offended anyone by writing this. It was certainly not my intention.
Thank you CKati for telling us your little story! I welcome anyone to express his or her thoughts here on my blog (as long as it’s not rude or attacking anyone personally). Please feel free to share whatever you like. Don’t worry about offending anyone, CKati. I treasure your feedback! 😀
Hi CKati, of course! For me, i watched the anime from beginning to end, (no manga though) when I was young and I was livid with the fact that Candy actually might end up with Albert, at that time. My point is what was represented is not true to Mizuki’s intention, and, along with Mizuki’s intentional lack of clarity in the work itself, creates all these various arguments for Terry. Mizuki is the author, she can write anything she wants…. the sad truth is the mis-interpretation springs from the anime representation…. in both of our cases (the earlier me), we are led to believe what was shown to us….. not sure if I am coherent here… but i understand your points.
I was even worse… When I watched the anime as a young girl I didn’t even understand the story. I remember my reaction of watching the last episode was like “what does it mean now that Candy knows who adopted her?” I had no idea that she was supposed to have strong feelings for her legal guardian or vice versa. 😛
Hi there Ckati
No offense taken, don’t you worry.
I was also a child when I started watching Candy Candy anime until my area stopped airing the show after Anthony’s death. I didn’t know Albert or Terry back then until I found dvds years later. And then I got bit disappointed with the ending that the anime creators didn’t provide clear ending on who Candy ends up with. Then someone led me to read manga and there I realized Albert was her destined love. Believe me when I tell you that I didn’t suspect of Albert as prince of the hill. Years back I was bored and thought of going back to my childhood animes and so badly to know who the boy in kilts was and began reading fanfics in fanfiction.net and watching it in anime dvd. To be honest, I was a little mad that she and Terry kept on missing each other like the one when Terry was on a farmer’s carriage and he didn’t even hear Candy’s screams due to snowstorm
Mojoqueen, I felt exactly like you when I finally watched all 115 episodes of the anime. This was a few months before I read the manga. I was completely frustrated with the ending. My first reaction was, …oh no, not Albert…
As Albertfanatix wrote, I also never suspected Albert as the POTH
Later this changed of course 😀
The fanfictions posted on Fanfiction.net sure helped in accepting this new ‘revalation’.
I guess, in the end, we all share the same feelings about this whole CC story.
And you are all so right that Mizuki should have written a more clear ending and shouldn’t have accepted the anime adaptions. However I am not sure how that all works and if she even was in the position of controling the course of the anime. On the other hand she had a chance to set things straight with CCFS and she still left us with an open ending.
You could also look on the bright side of it: now we have all these wonderfull fanfics 😉
Anyway, the quote with which this post started, is a very good one and certainly applies to Candy and Albert.
Ms Puddleglum, as usual, your analysis of the story is a very logical one and therefore so acceptable. I cannot find anything that I can disagree with 🙂
I am so glad that my post has somehow triggered this discussion among you, and thanks again CKati for your encouragement and support! I will talk more about CCFS later, so I won’t address it here yet. Talk to you later! 🙂
