Favorite Scenes in Candy Candy manga (2)
As I have mentioned in Love grew into romance (Part 2), the classic novel, “Daddy-Long-Legs” by Jean Webster, had inspired the author of Candy Candy, Mizuki.
(SPOILER ALERT) I read this book a long while ago, and just recently, I picked it up again and jumped to the end, reading Judy’s letter to her “Daddy” before she discovered his true identity. She was in love with Master Jervie then, who was 14 years older than her. The way Judy wrote about Master Jervie reminded me of the deep friendship between Candy and Albert.
Then, one of the manga scenes flashed across my head. Just before this particular scene, Candy seemed to have a hard time falling asleep, missing Albert. With nostalgia, she was lying down on the lower bunk that used to belong to her handsome roommate.
Inspired by Judy’s words in her letter about the man she loved,
“… I miss him, and miss him, and miss him. The whole world seems empty and aching. I hate the moonlight because it’s beautiful and he isn’t here to see it with me…”
I imagined that Candy saw the beautiful moonlight and wished Albert were here with her. When his happy face appeared in her mind, she asked longingly, where are you?
Hope you like this! 😀
First of all, I love the drawing in black and white. However, colored it looks better.
As you mentioned before, Candy misses Albert very much. Looking at this drawing there is no doubt about it.
She looks desperate without him. You don’t have to read the manga to see this.
As for the age difference; I know the right thing is to say that age doesn’t matter. However for me personally it does matter if the difference is too great. But I believe that everyone has to live their lives the way they want to. C&A’s age difference is perfectly acceptable. It isn’t like he could have been her father. The samegoes for Judy and Jervie.
Hi there CKati!! I’m so glad to hear from you again! I hope you’re doing well!
Yes indeed. Candy looked desperate in the original drawing, and I like how Igarashi drew her so pretty and feminine in this picture. 🙂
About age difference, I think it’s totally personal preference. Since Mizuki had been inspired by DLL, the age gap between C and A isn’t a surprise. Like you said, it’s still acceptable. The only age gap that really shocked me in the past was that of Jo and professor in Little Women. 25 years or something like that? 😛
Apart from the age difference between Jo and the professor, I just didn’t care for his character much. Although he has a nice personality in the book. Maybe I’m just being oldfashioned, but I had hoped for a younger man as Jo’s love interest. The film only made it worse.
I guess it does have similarities with CC. At first I thought Laurie was the one, just like Terry for Candy. I was wrong again LOL.
Same here, CKati! You’re not the only whose glasses were shattered. I had assumed Laurie for the longest time until Jo turned him down. I read somewhere that the professor was an afterthought though, unlike Albert in CC. The author didn’t plan to let Jo marry at all because she was so independent and unladylike. However, due to the tremendous pressure from the readers, urging her to write Jo to accept Laurie, the author ‘gave her readers a lesson’. The author let Jo soften a bit and accept love and protection from a man, but he got to be way more mature (old enough to be her father)….
Exactly Ms Puddle! He just shouldn’t have been that old.
I still love the book though and also watching the movie during the holiday season.
Agree with you, CKati! Perhaps Jo wanted a father figure? Who knows?
I also love the story and the movie adaptation by Winona Ryder. Which one did you watch?
I like this picture Albert look younger ! Wonderful work Ms Puddle as always !
Thank you so much, Antlay! Glad you like this one too! I think Albert looked younger and younger in the manga, especially near the end. Even when he appeared as Uncle William in Lakewood, shocking Candy, he looked very young and handsome there, dressed in black. 🙂
Oh Albert is achingly handsome on this picture **smooch**. Lovely colouring as usual, Ms Puddle.
One question, oh actually two questions has always come across my mind when I see this drawing. First, was Candy always wearing nightgown when she’s sleeping, even when Albert was around? I know that in her reminiscence of their cohabitation, she’s wearing pyjamas – the twin pyjamas. Second, did Candy let her hair loose when she’s sleeping/ready to sleep? Again, even when Albert was around?
Those questions lead me to another question if the answer was yes. How was Albert feeling to see her so feminine and beautiful? 🙂 🙂
Nonetheless, this drawing once again was a small proof that Candy’s feeling to Albert was not brotherly. That expression of hers! It’s a woman in love.
Thanks Reeka!! 🙂 Yes Candy remembered Albert as handsome, sweet, tender and/or smiling. 😛
I think Candy did change into nightgown though sometimes she wore the matching man’s pajamas. Igarashi didn’t let her hair down though, which was very odd. But in this particular scene, Candy looked more mature without the ribbons, and she appeared very feminine and longing. This is one of the more beautiful images of Candy in the manga for sure. To me, she seemed very forlorn without him.
Now, how Albert felt? He had fallen in love helplessly … 😛 but I think it wasn’t mainly because she was beautiful; it was her kindness to him
You know, somebody has been whispering into my mind that I should watch the old classic movie “Daddy-Long-Legs” years ago. It was in 1950’s though, but I didn’t mind. So, I did. Everything that I heard or read from CC were also from DLL. That’s when I began to fall in love with it. Is DLL anime version as same in the book? If so, then I should start watching it and read novel later. It’s unfortunate that Ms Mizuki didn’t make Albert marry CC just like in DLL if she were a big fan of that novel. Probably couldn’t do that for fear of copyright, am i wrong?
You did say Mr Jervie and Judy were 14 years apart? If Albert was 17 in CCFS, then he and CC were only 11 years apart. But age gap doesn’t matter to me as long as their friendship develops into love. Candy didn’t care for sure because she feels so secured and comfortable with Albert around.
Now back to this colorful art of yours…you took my breath away. You made me fall in love even more with these two.
Thank you for gracing us of your lovely colored adventure. : )
Oh yes… the image keeps playing on my mind while Candy was looking at the moonlight and there she was murmuring Albert’s name… so sweet.
In the manga she didn’t mention his name directly, at least not in this scene, but it’s very clear she missed him. Yes, very nostalgic but sweet…
Only in my imagination, lol. Yes, exactly. Her actions did show that she was missing Albert’s presence and I can see why those stubborn fans refuse to read the manga because it’s clear that Candy already had decided to let Terry go.
Are you saying that some people are in denial and unwilling to face the truth? LOL…
Well, in this scene we don’t know what she thought about Terry, but one thing was absolutely clear. Candy yearned for Albert to return to her.
I recalled telling a fan of Terry once few years ago that Candy did miss Albert, especially when she was in bed ( manga ) and couldn’t sleep and she imagined Albert laying next to her with Pouppe, and that fan brushed me off in denial lol. To me that scene was so sweet and touching that Candy wanted to see her best friend again. : )
That particular scene is confusing to me… Did Candy really imagine Albert lying beside her with Pouppe? I’m not so sure either 😛
Well, definitely she missed him. Sigh
BTW, since you like this so much, you can share this on your page. Only if you want. No obligation lol 🙂
Well, in this image… https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xaf1/v/t1.0-9/392643_223851211021401_1394494308_n.jpg?oh=7ff91052072eb98ea83d9ad3e37833d0&oe=54CF21A5&__gda__=1418974836_94636ba9744019d8fb92433cd2768c54 …shows of Albert on his bed with Pouppe next to Candy. I think Candy was on his bed thinking so much of Albert and I assumed his image just appeared next to her while she was missing him, or sliding down to memory lane of their good times together. Poor Candy. : ( Who knows, they might have playful times in that bed that Mizuki didn’t bother to write that down in her manga lol ; ) I’m sure you have seen best of friends in the movies how they like to play around whether they’re on a couch or on the bed. If so… then I can’t blame Candy, leaving her with such good memories like that. I’d miss him too. >__<
Lol, you read my mind. 😀 Thank you for your thoughtfulness. I'd love to. I'll download it right now and share it in the future. : )
I know which image you were talking about, but I didn’t think she was imagining him lying beside her… Although they were very close friends I still think they treated each other with modesty while living together. Otherwise, it was too tempting for Albert as a young man himself. LOL…
You’re welcome. Thank you for your interest and kind words. ^_^
I didn’t watch the movie or any adaptation of DLL actually, so I can’t answer your questions. However, when I’m re-reading this time, there are many parallels indeed! BTW, in this DLL book there wasn’t a wedding, but Master Jervie (yes 14 years older) did propose to Judy and she accepted. It was the sequel that talked about them as a married couple.
BTW, Master Jervie was in fact a good-looking guy… something that I missed when I first read the book long time ago LOL…
Thanks for your big encouragement and very kind words!! I’m glad to hear that 😀 😀 😀
Hmm, I must’ve seen the wedding part in anime version, but not in the movies. Sorry, lol. 😛 But to follow your lead, I think I’ll read the novel first and then jump into anime version when I’m through. Thanks so much for giving another story for me to read. I totally need it. Glad the book is available online and I don’t need to go to a store to buy one. 😀
Speaking of good-looking guys… the actor who played as Master Jervie in the movie was handsome, too! I wonder if that actor and the actress ( as Judy ) ended up together like the other reel & real life couples do? Hehe, sorry I couldn’t help it. 😀
The movie is different from the book I was told, but I’m not sure. Never watched that one myself 😛
And there are more movies about this and I haven’t watched the others. Before I’m totally confused, I think I’ll read the novel first : D
Good idea 😉
Enaka : Is the movie the one played by Fred Astaire? I haven’t watched it though, but I’ve read somewhere that it was a loose-based adaptation of the novel. Have you read Glass Mask manga? It is also loosely based on DLL. And the age different of the girl and the man is 11 years as well. So I guess, those who made nasty comments about Albert was somewhat a pedophile **rolling eyes**, were talking garbage. And it’s even more normal to happen in 19th and early 20th century.
I myself have always had a thing to Daddy Long Legs inspired stories. I remember I was about 14-15 when my mom watched a drama series ( from Hong Kong) and I got interested to join her because I found the story was quite romantic. Later I knew that the series was based on DLL. It was my first encounter to DLL actually. After that I searched the novel. 🙂
However, to me, Albert was a better character than Jervie. His background/past sadness, his selfless love, his sacrifices to her, all was really beautiful.
I know DLL has inspired many stories, and I was told some Terry fans hated this story 😉
-Reeka
Hi I’m sorry for the late reply. Yes, the actor was Fred Astaire. And nope, I haven’t read Glass Mask in manga. About their age gap, I just ignore some fans’ negative rants. As long as this couple love and care for each other, I’m happy. I had a friend whose parents were 12 years apart. She once told me her dad was very thoughtful and caring to her Mom. Up to now her Dad’s still sending her Mom flowers randomly and that was very sweet. Oh yes… Albert is so much better than any character I read from a book lol. : D
-Ms Puddle
It’s because Terry’s character doesn’t exist anywhere in DLL or some books where Mizuki was inspired. I was told that Terry was being compared to Laurie in Little Women who always argues with Jo, like Terry and Candy. Now I know where that constant argument of T and C came from after I watched Little Women again to check why it was among Mizuki’s inspirations. : )
Other than Laurie in Little Women, Gilbert in Anne of Green Gables might be another one. He teased Anne when they first met and gave her a nickname, Carrot? Don’t remember now. They argued / bantered not as much as Jo and Laurie though. 😉
Were you disappointed that Laurie didn’t marry Jo? I am sure you gave me an answer before but I forgot lol 🙂
No… Not really, just surprised. 😉
Hi! Well I have read DLL and watched the anime (2 versions). There is a short one that is kind of a movie and adapts more to the novel. The second one is a japanese anime (40 episodes). (I have found it only in japanese with english subtitles)
Both versions have their differences with the original novel, specially the second one but as I remember they both have a wedding scene. I’m pretty sure the first one has it.
But again, nothing compares like reading the book. Is like when you read Candy’s manga and then watch the anime.
About DLL, there is Jimmie, Sallie’s brother. I guess he could be kind of a Terry because I guess he feels attracted to Judy and in someway, she feels the same for him, although his character doesn’t have all the characteristics of Terry. Sometimes I can see Jarvis is a little bit jealous about him. But let me know if I’m wrong… 🙂
I agree, my dear friend! I always prefer to read the book(s) if possible. Often times the adaptation(s) will differ from the originals, which is not necessarily bad. However, CC anime disappointed me again and again. Sigh.
Yes, Jimmie McBride is definitely a ‘rival’ in Master Jervie’s eyes. He was handsome and only slightly older than Judy, and apparently this brother of Judy’s good friend was attracted to Judy. He sent her gifts. They danced in more than one occasion, and he taught her various outdoor activities for fun, etc.
Yes, I also sensed jealousy from Master Jervie, dear QuevivaCandy! Though Judy only treated Jimmie as good friend! She said “Jimmie isn’t grown up enough”. 😉
That settles it, then. I’ll start reading the novel first. Thank you for the idea, quevivacandy, and congratulations on your caption contest winning. : )
Ms Puddle: Jimmie, eh? That’s from the novel, right? Now I know where Mizuki got the name ‘Jimmy’ as Candy’s little orphaned brother. 😉
Yes. His name is James McBride, but everyone called him Jimmie 🙂
Thank you for providing everything I need to know, Ms Puddle. : )
Btw, I’m worried about this. Hope it’s just a rumor… we might lose our FB profile accounts even pages unless we start paying. That creator can be cruel… : /

I don’t believe this at all, and I think this was hoax 😛
