Artbook titled Candy’s Love
I was both happy and relieved to hear from my friend CandyAlbert, who contacted me recently, chatting about Candy Candy’s poems written by Nagita sensei. She kindly let me share them on my blog, and I have chosen this one below, written by Kyoko Mizuki (Nagita sensei’s pen name). As you can see, it’s one of Yumiko Igarashi’s famous drawings for Candy Candy, which was displayed in the original Candy Candy ending song.
You can find the original Japanese poem, with translations to Spanish and English, on CandyAlbert’s Facebook page, Candy y Albert, el Príncipe de la Colina. Here I’d like to show you the same image but with Chinese translation, even though it has a couple of minor mistakes, because I like the title of this artbook — “Candy’s Love”. Yes, who else? 😉 ❤️
This is my own translation to English:
Who are you, really?
The prince I met on the hill,
On the day when the flower petals were dancing.
That, was it a dream?
Yet, in my hand is
The silver badge my prince has dropped --

First, I don’t know how exactly to translate the sentence about the flower petals dancing. In the poem Nagita sensei wrote りらりらと, which translates to “in the manner of…” However, my limited knowledge tells me りらりら is often associated with rain. Perhaps it’s similar to the soft rain pitter-pattering sounds? Please correct me if I”m wrong. For your information,りら by itself can mean the lilacs or the violet color of this kind of flowers. Please use your own imagination to picture how the flower petals dancing in what manner. 😉
You might want to ask, “What are the translation mistakes in the Chinese version?” It’s about the badge. It was written that the prince has handed the badge to Candy, which we all know was not true. In the original Japanese poem, it said that he had dropped (lost) it. The other mistake, a minor one, is about what the prince had said to Candy about her smile. He said that when she smiled she was prettier (cuter). In the story he compared that to her crying, but this part was omitted in the poem.
When translating the last section of the original poem to English, it is simply “when can I see Prince on the Hill”, but the nuance is lost. Hence I added a bit of emphasis. Also I translated to “see” instead of “meet” because she already met him. Another choice is “encounter” or “meet with”. For your interest, you can read more about いつになったらあえるの
Fay we are several to have read this message on the page of Arechi Manga … Even if they deleted all the messages thereafter … this fan Yurani.L Vegas and Johanna Arias are fans obsessed with Terry. And I am almost sure that these 2 people are the same …. When she is fired from a group she uses one of these 2 names. They are the same words word for word.🤔🙄
To make such a request to Arechi Manga … these girls are not certain of their allegations that Terry is Candy’s husband. And I can only understand …Nagita never reunites Candy and Terry even after Susana’s death. And for good reason, Candy is already married to Albert, as confirmed by the epilogue that makes them tremble so much.😜🖒❤

As I’ve mentioned in my previous post, there’s no point wasting our time any further with a miserable Terrytroll and stooping to her level. Since the professional administrative team took action and banned her posts, that’s all that matters.
Let’s just focus on analyzing the CCFS textual evidence generously provided by Keiko Nagita with a cool and open mind always centering on the importance of examining all the relevant data and available alternative interpretations.
Thank you for keeping us posted @Louna 97. It’s unfortunate for the Arechi Manga team to have to undergo such filth but at least they now know what they are up against with regards to certain lousy trolls. I agree with @Myra that we should leave that insignificant minority to rot in its own misery while the majority of us enjoy our reading of Nagita’s marvelous novel.

In the different questions asked to Arechi Manga, yesterday a Terryfan asked the translators to move the epilogue of the novel between Candy and Albert … And to place it in front… … And instead of putting Terry’s only letter at the end of the novel. The audacity of the Teryfans have no limit, this idiot did not understand that Nagita put this epilogue at the end of the novel precisely because she says she wants to create a greater impact on the readers, and for this is the best place. You can clearly hear it from her mouth in the video I posted here… this is the last question before the end of the conference.
It wasn’t only one rabid Terrytroll but a few of them which kept on pressuring the Arechi Manga editorial team and translators to state that anohito is Terry and remove the letters between Candy and Albert and place them in Section 3 of the novel.
Of-course, all this is laughable but there was a horrendously wretched little Terrytroll which literally attacked each and every person who supported Albert or was neutral. That Terrytroll has been reduced to a mere village clown and very few people bother to respond to her. However, the professional administrative team of the Arechi Manga Facebook page didn’t take this matter lightly and kept on warning her that her comments will get deleted but she kept on obsessing and over 100 comments of hers were deleted. No joke.
She kept on sh/tposting and attacking other commentators with a barrage of hysterical rants even though she kept on getting warned by Arechi Manga admin. Eventually, the administrators had no other alternative but to remove all her nonsensical comments and delete their post entirely, hence, redacting a new one simply announcing that the translators will respond to all relevant queries which have to do with translation issues alone in due time. This is the same Terrytroll whose insulting comments keep on getting deleted at the RamenParaDos YouTube channel as well after having been repeatedly warned to calm down and stop obsessing. She’s severely disturbed and has an unhealthy obsession with Terry.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again..Each person has the right to their opinion but they don’t have any right insulting and harassing others whose opinions do not align with theirs. Kudos to both Arechi Manga and RamenParaDos for maintaining utmost professionalism and impartiality by being respectful and fair to all members of the CC community-the Terryfans, the Albertfans, and those who are neutral.
Myra it’s true she answered the question of each Alberfans and attacked them with nonsense. That Nagita speaks only 2 loves for Candy: Anthony and Terry … That the sandwich scene has been removed from the novel Cfs and everything related to Magnolia. That Albert is Candy’s father and that Nagita never said that the choice of husband is between Albert and Terry. And that she wanted to create a greater impact by placing the epilogue at the end of the novel.
And the biggest impact in history is the death of Susana and all the details that Nagita would have added on the character of Terry. 😃😂
She also tells that Terry and Candy promised themselves to meet after Susana’s death 😆 And Candy would have declared that Pony’s hill had more value in these eyes when Terry went there. 😃😃 And of course when asked to prove these allegations with the pages of the novel Cfs, she turns a deaf ear and repeats the same things on the different groups on Facebook. We can clearly see that she has never read one of the official versions of the novel Cfs. These only sources come from analyzes by Terryfans and the unofficial translation on Wattap by the Terryfans who try to embellish the passages on Terry 😆😜 .. .
She was fired on several mixed groups because of these comments and these permanent insults towards the Alberfans and the character of Albert. Everyone says that she is a madman obsessed with Terry 😆😀

Let’s get the facts straight and to hell with that pathetic little Terrytroll. No use wasting our time with that circus number.
Indeed, the sandwich scene is omitted in the CCFS as is the lion scene and tons of other scenes between Candy and Terry as well as between Candy and Albert. Nagita explained that this was for editorial and financial reasons and not because she wanted to do this.
Although the sandwich scene is omitted, Candy devotes a significant section in her narrative where she elucidates the profoundly deep bond between her and Albert. She actually complains a bit that even though Albert had promised to share everything with her as she had promised to share everything with him, he still kept certain secrets from her. She knew that his mysterious nature meant her no harm but his ineffability exasperated her on many an occasion.
Nonetheless, Candy emphasizes that importance of the relationship between her and Albert where they had promised to share everything. This statement is by far more powerful and intense than any sandwich scene because in the CCFS it wasn’t only a proposal made by Albert to Candy but a vow exchanged between the two of them om equal terms.
Moreover, Candy makes it perfectly clear that she never saw Albert as a father or as a brother. Instead, her feelings for him are intricate and deep-rooted because Albert holds a special place in her heart. These are her own words and no fan can delete or deny that.
Hello @Myra I have not yet caught up the comments concerning the stupidity of some crazy fans, but at least I can say the sandwich scene is not omitted in CCFS.
In fact, Candy brought it up again and again to remind Albert (WAA) and his promise to share happy and sad things with her.
I totally agree with you @Myra about Candy’s own words and emphasis about her feelings for Albert and her relationship with him. You’re absolutely right that no fan can delete or deny any of that from CCFS.
Albert was apparently special to Candy, and she always liked him. If not, why would she care about him so much, even after he had disappeared in her life?
@Myra, I still remember my promise to you to dig up the manga differences but so far I have only found one picture comparison. I’m sure I have a couple more but I need to find them. Please bear with me for now.
The actual scene doesn’t exist-at least I don’t remember anything about Albert sharing his sandwich with Candy in the CCFS as he had done in the manga and the anime. That doesn’t reduce the significant of sharing between Candy and Albert, however. On the contrary, the CCFS makes it even more intense than the manga and anime put together because Candy is the one who stresses how important that exchange of vows was to her and she hoping it was just as important to Albert. In the manga and the anime, we get to see this sharing unfold right in front of us but in the CCFS we get to know from Candy’s own mindset and feelings what that promise meant to her. I agree with you that Candy was deeply affected by that promise. The impact of that promise had a far greater impact on Candy in the CCFS than in the manga or the anime. This is the reason why she kept on reminding Albert about that promise in the CCFS, as you have eloquently explained.
Yes @Myra that I completely agree. It’s unfortunate we readers don’t get to see the “sandwich scene” unfolded as in the manga or anime, but in CCFS the promise was different — from sorrows and concerns to happy and sad things (I forgot the exact wordings lol, but something along this line).
Not only that, the sandwich promise was mentioned both in Candy’s recollection and in the epilogue. As you said, apparently and undoubtedly Candy was deeply affected by Albert’s kindness and tenderness. 👍

Louna, I have also seen that mentioned on your Facebook page, and I couldn’t believe my eyes. You are right, there is no limit to the audacity of those persons, and to their stupidity as well. Asking the editors to literally change the structure of the novel, just to prove their point. After their ridiculous claim last year that Terry is Prince on the Hill, I thought they couldn’t go lower than that. Well, I was wrong.
Myra, I have to agree with you that they must be mentally and/or psychologically disturbed to act that way. That kind of obsession over some fictional character can’t be healthy. I am really sorry for Terry. He doesn’t deserve that kind of fans. As a matter of fact, nobody does.
That being said, I think that even if the novel is translated to a dozen more languages, the reaction of those crazy Terry fans will still be the same. One word can describe them perfectly: Pathetic.

My sentiments exactly, @Fay. The more desperate they are, the more likely they know who Anohito really is but are in denial.
Some of the those Terryfans have stooped even lower by pressuring the editorial team of Arechi Manga to dispense with the books they’ve already released to the public and re-edit new ones where Anohito is Terry and the letters between Candy and Albert are placed in the 3rd section. Tbh, I’ve never seen such level of desperation coming from a fanbase. They’re ignoring Nagita’s intentions and frantically trying to get the editorial team to change the structure and meaning of the original novel. Even if they manage to convince the Spanish editorial team to change the story, it still doesn’t change the fact that the Italian and French translations are based on the original Japanese text.

After that flthy attack on Ms. Puddle’s blog some time ago, I thought Greek Terry fans might be the worst ever, but it seems Spanish are just as bad. It makes me wonder at those people. Are they really so hopelessly stupid or are they just trying to provoke with such behavior? Either way, they are lamentable.

It was indeed, thanks to the girls who gave them the answer they deserved, and to Ms. Puddle who blocked them (her) afterwards. We all know by now it was just one miserable person creating such a mess and making a spectacle of herself. Later on, just to vent her frustration somewhere else, she entered the Greek CC forum and through it she sent me an insulting message which of course I chose to ignore and delete.
Bear in mind that the Terry-fans are going crazy because they had expected a definite ending to the CCFS where Terry is 100% anohito. However, the editor of this Spanish translation made it clear that the ending will remain dubious just as in the authentic 2010 Japanese novel. The Terry-fans have been suffering from convulsions ever since.

After having despised and criticized Pika Edition for having made a bad translation by favoring Albert designing him as Candy’s husband by the different clues of the novel Cfs. By raising any ambiguity in the story, according to them… By showing Terry as Candy’s ex-boyfriend with whom Candy turned this page of her life.

Honestly, I think the Arechi Manga edition is too attentive to the absurdities of some fans. During the Italian and French translation…The editorials did their translation without the fans interfering with their work and once finished, they put the books on the market. Leaving the Fans to make their own deduction of the story after reading Cfs’ novel in its entirety. I don’t know why but I have reservations about this translation…I think we’re only 8 days away from the novel’s release. QuArechi Manga should let the fans get their own novel, copy of the book. Then propose this kind of discussion where each fan could discuss with the references of the pages in hand…
Although the publisher Carles seems to understand the story well suggesting in his interwiew to the Fans to read the references that Nagita quote that inspired him. Especially Papa Longue for a better understanding of the story of Candy…by declaring Albert as Candy’s third love❤👍🌹
For my part I can consider myself lucky to have spoken directly with Keiko Nagita in Paris who came to promote his book and valid translation…Nagtia answered directly to my questions. And told me that I wouldn’t be disappointed with the second volume Candy- Le Prince sur la Colline which contains a lot more details about Albert’s character. And I wasn’t disappointed… I hope that Arechi Manga will be able to show professionalism and not be manipulated by some Terry fans …🙄🤔 who have been harassing Nagita for years are asking him to rewrite his story in favor of Terry their favorite character.
Keiko Nagita answered them in a certain way by adding the death of Susana to Terry’s short letter in 2010. Asking them to use their imagination…leaving an open ending.
But these obsessed fans are not satisfied and close to the release of the Spanish translation are totally in a state of diabolism. Going so far as to create fake Alberfans profile to comment on Arechi Manga this: That Albert sees Candy as his adopted daughter and thinks it’s weird to marry her using the word Woody…
Of course, no real Albertfans knowing about Candy’s adoption conditions. And his close relationship with Albert and their feelings of love for each other ..Would not have written such a thing 😁😀. These fans are pathetic and have no boundaries to their madness. These fans also leave provocations on the Arechi Manga website to Albert’s fans in order to make them react by exposing us and discrediting us in the eyes of Arechi Manga. 😡

The French translation did not change the story, only making the author’s intentions clearer to French readers.

Louna : Hello Yun Chan… An obvious analysis, as always. For me, too, roses have never been associated with Terry’s character. The two times they are mentioned in Cfs novel are not directly related to Terry… The only flowers that are important to Candy are roses… These roses were first grown by Albert Rosemary’s sister, Albert Rosemary’s sister, and then by her nephew Anthony … After the disappearance of her sister and nephew, her roses are now associated with Albert who planted them at the site of Anthony’s accident … Yun Chan, did you follow Arechi Manga’s interview live on May 14th with Idoia and Carles Miralles ? I think that if you had participated with all your knowledge and comparisons of the different versions of the novel Cfs you would have … You would have taught them a lot.

The Albertfans on facebook don’t take off from idoia’s silence and say that fortunately Carles Miralles made it clear that Albert is indeed Candy’s 3 loves and the two are the 2 protagonists of the story quoting the simulation with Dady long legs .
@Louna 97: I watched that interview but I was expecting less of the fans talking and more of the experts providing their authoritative expertise on the translation and editorial assessment of this book.
As usual, some hysterical Terryfans are creating ridiculous conspiracy theories accusing the editor of collaborating with the Albertfans. Some of those fans have been reduced to mere fools. In addition, Carles Miralles explained that the novel will consist of three parts: the first represented by a rose, alluding to Anthony “a sweet love”, the second by a daffodil in relation to Terry “an unrequited love” and the third by a bundle of letters – well it’s epistolary form, this fragment mentions the exchange of letters between Candy and Albert, the Prince of the Hill, since their relationship is inspired by Judy and Jervie from the novel: Daddy Long Legs by Jean Webster (1912).
Meanwhile, Terry and Candy’s relationship is similar to that of the characters Josephine and Laurie in Louisa May Alcott’s novel Little Women, as it is a love that “keeps on coming,” Miralles explained. ─ It’s important to say that this male character in the Little Women story marries Amy, the younger sister of his former childhood sweetheart. While Josephine finds love with Professor Friedrich Bhaer─.
Roses and daffodils
According to Arechi Manga “a daffodil in the second section of the novel is purely illustrative, since this flower is mentioned several times in scenes of the novel that pass through Scotland”; therefore they “have deemed it appropriate to use it, just as in the first section, roses are used, because they are mentioned several times”.
Finally, the author through the editorial of Arechi Manga sent, Tuesday 28 April, a message to his fans about the pandemic:
“In this situation, I feel that all words are useless, but I also think that Candy could say something like that: Come on, cheer up! Let your eyes look for the light in the darkness. Let your beautiful nose find the scent of a sweet rose. Know that if you always smile, the light and the smell of roses will always surround you. »

There’s been a lot of (mis-)information dispersed all over social media regarding this Spanish novel. First off, is it an exact translation of the original Japanese novel which was published in 2010 or is this Spanish novel going to be different?
I’ve already read the additional messages by Nagita in the Italian and French novels but these messages were general and not to make any changes to the original Japanese novel. Will the Spanish novel do the same?

About the flowers, I wonder if pro-Terry fans are going to claim that’s the “evidence” he is Anohito 😁
The editor of the Spanish translation has clarified that those flowers are just illustrations because they were mentioned a lot-roses for the first section and daffodils for the second section of the novel, respectively. Therefore, no one really cares what a few pro-Terry fans have to say since their claims aren’t supported by either the author or the editors.
I’ll get back to you once I receive feedback from my friends about that controversial video. I wasn’t planning to post the link without your approval. It’s publicly available so anyone interested shouldn’t find it difficult to check it out for themselves.

About the flowers, it seems to imply those two were different stages in Candy’s life: (1) new beginning (roses) but with loss (thorns) (2) new beginning, hope but unrequited love
That’s what the editor of the Spanish translation said during the YouTube interview held by Ramen Para Dos. He didn’t imply but said in an outspoken way that the roses in the first section represented Candy’s past regarding her life with Anthony and the daffodils were drawn for the second section because they were referred to often during Candy’s past at St Paul’s school with Terry and the other characters. Neither the roses nor the daffodils represent or indicate the character or identity of Candy’s lover in the mid-1930s.

M’s Puddles as far as I’m concerned there’s no confusion …Candy’s love affairs are represented by 3 symbolic images:
-Anthony by roses- First love.
-Terry by the daffodils- An unrequited love
(although I don’t see any direct link of these flowers to Terry as the daffodils are mentioned 2 times once …1 time when Candy equates Terry with a stone and this one : Answer that stones have no smell… …to smell the scent of a flower among other things daffodils.)
The second time when Candy once married describe the frame of her house mentioning the flowering of daffodils . Nothing surprising since she is in England and on the other hand to show that the scene is in spring.
-Albert last love stable and destined – With a packet of LETTERS that represents the epilogue . Candy’s 3 loves are mentioned as confirmed by keiko Nagita playing an important role in her life at a given time as Candy says in these letters.
Albert is always the last thing that happens in Candy’s life and as the publication states, the Spanish translation tells us what happens in Candy’s life once que Albert it is revealed to be the prince of the hill.
Candy makes peace with the people she will never see again… First Anthony and then Terry … Then appears Anahito her husband in front of her, she runs in his arms as usual the only person who has always given her peace and happiness … For me everything is clear the loop loop. The Spanish translation can’t go against the original story in Japanese very well explained in the French version where Anahito takes all its meaning.

Hi Louna, I’ve read some very angry reviews coming from certain Terry fans about the French translation involving Terry’s brief letter to Candy. I don’t remember it being any different to the Italian translation. Do you have the French translation of that letter available? Could you please post it here so that I could compare it with the Italian translation?
Hi @Sarah, I won’t be surprised the Italian translator had misleading translation in this brief letter. If I remember correctly, the translator mentioned “feelings” but in fact Terry did not.

Some desperate fans are trying to associate anohito with flower imagery but nowhere is there such a correlation or association in the novel. Candy’s home in the UK is adorned with many roses and she personally attends to Anthony’s hybrid rose which she has dedicated an allotment. There is also a reference to daffodils but not in Candy’s home or garden but in the rural countryside. Further on, however, there is a reference to the clear blue river and the clear blue skies. If we are to accept that the roses pertain to Anthony and the daffodils to Terry, then we should also accept that the clear blue river and skies pertain to Albert as Candy constantly talks about his beautiful blue eyes which are like the clear lakes, rivers and skies.
Apparently, anohito hasn’t been associated with any of those three features-roses, daffodils, clear blue water and skies-so furthering that lame argument regurgitated by a handful of desperate fans is a waste of time.
Well said, @Lynn. 👏 In addition to what you said, I’d like to point out that there are other clues about Anohito which are more significant than flowers or nature. Yet, the desperate fans have conveniently ignored those, perhaps because these hints don’t show Terry in a favourable light. 🤔
Those biased fans are not only desperate but also miserably inconsistent which weakens their petty arguments even further. At times they whine that we shouldn’t take the manga into consideration when reading the CCFS, yet, at other times they frantically cling onto bits and pieces of information from the manga when it suits their empty rhetoric. For example, anohito is supposed to be a guy who is capable of repairing things including Candy’s musical box given as a gift to her from Stear. We all know that Albert is the handyman who’s adept at repairs and taking care of himself. Terry is the exact opposite. Nevertheless, some fans are so desperate as to quote a minor detail from the manga where Stear compliments Terry’s delicate hands and says that he could have been his good helper. If those fans don’t want to consider the manga, then why are they begging this source to prove their ridiculous point? Talk about lack of consistency..
I’m more than willing to remove the manga from any CCFS reading but that will have to apply in all cases and not just those which suit certain fans’ obsessions.
I was surprised to read a few more differences between the manga and the CCFS. For one, Susanna doesn’t appear to have lost her leg in the novel but she was paralyzed and had to be in a wheelchair. Nothing more is said about her condition. There’s also another detail that I hadn’t noticed and it has to do with Terry. In the manga, he had decided to quit his job and head for Rockstown. However, in the novel Terry got fired from his job because of his very poor performance and lack of professionalism. He joined some decadent theater group in Rockstown because he had no other source of income. There’s no mention of him leaving Susanna in the novel as he had done in the manga. This is a significant difference to the story-line. In general, Terry appears to be a wimp in the novel. He was far more dynamic in the anime and manga. He’s a bit of a marionette in the novel devoid of any self-control and perseverance.
Agree with you, @Lynn. In CCFS, that minor detail about Terry’s fingers is not there, if I recall correctly.

About Terry, he did leave Susanna, because in Candy’s unsent letter she mentioned him returning to Susanna or something like that. Again, I have to double check. 😉
You’ll find all that information in volume 2, section 3 where Candy is explaining the situation in her letter to Eleanor Baker. Candy makes it clear that Terry didn’t quit his job but got fired by his employer. There’s no mention that he had abandoned Susanna. She supported his return to New York but not necessarily because he had left her but after having had to support himself via that small theater group performing at slums. Presumably, she supported his decision to leave since he could no longer provide for her as he had lost his job. She didn’t really have much of a choice.
As for Susanna’s amputation, I don’t think it’s mentioned anywhere. I’ll double-check too.
Without any shadow of a doubt, there is no mention of Stear complimenting Terry’s delicate hands in the novel. That scene only exists in the manga. I’m not sure about the anime.
@Lynn, you’re right, I think. I must have mixed up with the manga version when they mentioned Susanna had her leg or foot (足) amputated.
I double checked Annie’s letter to Candy and Candy’s letter to Miss Baker. Annie read the newspapers and magazines and guessed what had happened to her best friend. However, it didn’t mention Susanna being paralyzed — but because of her serious injury she had to use wheelchair for the rest of her life. In the manga she sometimes used wheelchair too.
In Candy’s recollections, she only said Susanna’s injury being much worse than expected. No amputation mentioned.
Whatever happened on that hospital rooftop that snowy night pretty much matched the manga version though. For example, Candy was able to stop Susanna from jumping off the roof just in time, and Susanna said to Candy if she was alive she would only be a trouble to the two of them. Terry also rushed to the scene to carry Susanna back, etc. So I think she wasn’t paralyzed, as she could at least walk to the rooftop to attempt suicide?
About Terry’s being fired by Stratford theatre, yes, it was in Candy’s letter to his mother. However, I thought it was rumour lol… 😆
In the manga did it mention Terry abandoned Susanna? I don’t recall, because in that empty theatre (Rockstown) he remembered her standing with crutches and understanding smile.
If I remember those scenes in the manga correctly, Terry told Susanna that he had to leave for a while and she understood. However, in the CCFS Terry had to find another source of income after getting fired from the theater group in New York. Presumably, he had developed such a bad reputation due to his poor performance that no other respectable theater group in New York would employ him. He had probably turned to drinking again because Candy found him a drunken mess at Rockstown.
Concerning Susanna’s injury, all the CCFS explains is that they were severe. I don’t understand why Nagita decided to kill off Susanna. Wouldn’t it have been better if she was alive and recovering from her injuries and thus urging Terry to return to Candy because she’s become mature enough to realize that those two should have another chance in their relationship? Killing Susanna off is rather lame because it makes Terry look bad-as if he’s a vulture or hyena waiting for Susanna to die so as to contact Candy again. However, if there was a scene where Susanna and Terry talked this over and she explained to him that she was getting bettering and wanted to be more independent, Terry would have understood and let go. This would have given far greater credit to all the characters involved in this tragic situation.
There are too many loopholes in the CCFS. Susanna’s death is pointless because it sort of shows-either intentionally or inadvertently-that terry was hovering over Susanna’s deathbed so he can finally make his grand escape and jump into Candy’s knickers once she’s proclaimed dead. It also debases the quality of the relationship Candy and Terry could have had. It would have been much better if Susanna was convalescing and encouraged Terry to go back to Candy and have another go. The other problem with the CCFS is that we only get to know Candy’s point-of-view and Annie’s regarding Terry’s feelings for Susanna. In the anime and the manga, Terry clearly admits to himself that he’s attracted to this stunning young actress. We get no insight into Terry’s feelings in the CCFS after his departure from St Paul’s. Instead, he’s reduced to a flat and subordinate character.

Concerning Susanna’s injuries, the CCFS remains vague about it. We only get to know about Susanna’s amputated leg in the manga and anime.
In the CCFS, Terry does not abandon Susanna or his acting career. He got fired by the theater group due to his poor performance.
In the manga, Terry explains to Susanna that he has to leave for a while but in the CCFS he had to join a lower level theater group because he was out of work. He must have relapsed to his drinking problem because Candy found him an intoxicated mess at Rockstown. This scene is found in both the manga and the CCFS.

Hi! I was intrigued by the interview, and went to check the comments, as per usual Terry-Fans trying to impose the same old arguments. I have been re-watching the anime in these days, and being part of the Spanish CC community, I understand why they are so stubborn with their opinions and unwillingness to try and be more open minded. It’s sad to see how they prefer to ignore the whole point of the story is being resilient and lokking forwars to the future, and the completely forget how Candy was too, even with Susanna dead, she wouldn’t be okay with being with Terry, like nothing ever happened lol that’s simply something Candy wouldn’t do, if you can’t comprehend this it’s because you didn’t put the minimum effort into getting to know her.
No doubt the anime is the reason of this big problem, when I was younger I remember watching it and due to the ambiguity of the ending, asking google and the first thing that appeared was a blog talking about the classic arguments, all of thrm already debunked: Shakespeare book, daffodils, Candy living in the UK, Susanna’s death and Terry’s short letter. (10 years and they haven’t found anything more) didn’t even doubt it, and if you scrolled down most of the blogs that appear in the results are Terry-Fans.
Years passed by, and I saw something CC related, curiosity sparked and something just didn’t feel right about Terry being Anohito, that’s when I first found Yue Chan’s blog and analysis. I read the manga multiple times, and it all made sense! As you told me in a previous post, the anime at some points totally deviates from the manga: Terry is waaaaaay more charming, loving and caring in the anime, they gave him so many more plotlines after St. Paul’s.
While doing this, they put much more emphasis on their relationship, and with all those times that producers added were they almost reunited but Mrs. Destiny just said “Not today 🧚♀️✨”, just makes it even more heart-wrenching and cruel when they finally break up! (Don’t ge me wrong, I really liked their relationship, but it wasn’t meant to be, it wasn’t who the story was about)
At the same time the anime took a lot from Albert, while there’s still some hints here and there about their feelings, they’re so subtle that you can easily miss them lol and all the scenes like their post break-up Magnolia’s life, Rockstown, Granduncle reveal (This one was soo lame), their days in Lakewood and the manga final scene 😭😭, were minimized, or completely changed, so was Granduncle’s and overall Albert’s relevance to the story. They even made him look like the bad guy with that bar fight with Terry:(
I know dates were involved in the anime being so messy and having so many filler episodes in the final stage, but it feels like they didn’t try at all…
Btw I was so bummed when they didn’t give Amnesiac Albert his short hair 😭😭😭
In conclussion, everything in the manga is clearer, so, whilst the anime dilluted most of Candy and Albert’s relationship and intensified her and Terry’s romance, without anymore CC/CCFS knowledge, it’s a little harder to see their relationship evolve.
I believe, in the anime it’s more difficult to see the bigger picture, that’s why the finale looks so vague and incomplete.

My younger sister knew nothing about CC after Anthony’s death, I just recently conviced her to read the manga and it has been interesting to watch someone experience this story for the first time.
To this moment (First half of Vol.III): She’s not over Anthony yet lol, thinks Terry seems a little bit toxic, likes Archie better than Stear, doesn’t like Annie, likes Patty, hates Eliza and Neal, and calls Albert “The nice guy with the beard”.
I’ll update about her opinion when she’s done!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and I also think that Terry fans’ arguments are primarily speculations, if not wishing thinking, especially about Candy reuniting with Terry simply because Susanna had died. This is almost laughable, considering that the two were practically strangers by then. What they had left was distant memories in their teenage years.
Like you, I figure the anime version had put too much emphasis on Terry and sacrificed Albert instead. The ending was lame and rushed, not to mention the drawings had deteriorated over time. Sigh…
Anyway, I’ll be curious to know more about your younger sister’s thoughts after reading the manga without much of the anime’s influence. Another CC fan once said that a new reader would have no problem seeing who the main male character is after reading the manga. 😁😆

It seems that the anime caused a lot of confusion among the CC fans but I think the producers of the TOEI animation were right to make necessary changes to the original story.
The producers had to change Terry’s character if they wanted him to be somewhat likable. @FJ’s younger sister is absolutely right about calling Terry “toxic”. Perhaps back in the 1960s-1980s, Terry’s abusive and misogynistic character was appealing to certain women but young women in the 21st century have no respect for such toxic characters who want to control and contain women. Candy, unfortunately, was raised to be inferior to men as most women were raised to be subservient to men back then in the early 20th century. She was so clueless that she thought that when a man hits her and forces himself on her, it’s because he loves her. Fortunately, times have changed and women who respect themselves have zero tolerance for such abusive men. This is the reason why the TOEI producers had to soften and modernize Terry’s character by subtracting the noble qualities from Albert and affixing them onto Terry. A characteristic example is the May Fest where the anime producers change it completely by removing the scene where Terry forces himself on Candy and beats her up for her refusal to submit to him. Instead, we get a kind and generous Terry in the anime where he simply gets a bit jealous about Anthony but then goes off to help Candy be included in the May Fest. Of-course none of this kindness exists in either the manga or the CCFS. On the contrary, Terry is even more toxic, possessive and abusive in the CCFS.
The same applies throughout the anime where Terry is portrayed as a constant supportive partner to Candy even when they’re apart. Obviously, the anime producers weren’t comfortable with Terry’s aloofness, therefore, they decided to turn him into a very different type of character which is more akin to Albert, ironically.
In reality, many of these Terry-fans who developed a crush on the anime Terry were infatuated with the manga and CCFS version of Albert.
Thank you so much for updating us on this amazing artwork and the background story to these illustrations. It’s obvious that Candy was head-over-heels for Albert, initially as the Prince of the Hill, and later on as her dearly beloved man.
Yes Sarah. As Candy said in her letter to Albert right after his confession, she had never forgotten about him (that also implies her strong feelings for POTH). In her second letter we readers learned that she had told her roommate Albert countless times about POTH, so it is a big deal that he had come all the way to Pony’s Home to make such an important confession and even intended to stay afterwards.
It’s such a pity that we don’t have more narrative about the Magnolia as we do in the manga and the anime. Apparently, we can easily derive from the correspondence exchanged between Candy and Albert that their living together wasn’t trivial or nondescript but profoundly important to them. They had been living together and sharing so much quality time for about 2 years and perhaps even more. That’s quite a lot of time considering that Candy had only spend a few months together with Anthony and less than a year with Terry. If she could have fallen in love with Anthony and later on with Terry in such very little time, one could imagine how deep her relationship was with Albert. This isn’t just theory or imagination because those letters Candy and Albert keep writing to each other displays a commingle of intense and nuanced emotions such as nostalgia, yearning, insecurity, and arguably a bit of jealousy. But then again, that’s what couples are all about.😉

Presumably, you’ve heard that in the US, the states still can’t agree on a uniform resumption to normality. The lockdown may be further extended in New York and California.
As for these manga drawings by Yumiko Igarashi, they never cease to amaze me. The expressions of the characters and the dynamics tell a story of their own without the need of too many words.
It goes to show how weak and flat the CC/CCFS novels are without the aforementioned drawings.

About this poster by Yumiko Igarashi, it’s indeed one of her best. I like that Candy is not drawn as a little girl, and yet she still longs to see the mysterious boy again, the one with the gentle smile which she has never forgotten 😉.
I’ll have to agree with you, Interstellar, and it’s not the first time I do agree with your commentary because you always display a well-balanced argument. The novel isn’t very exciting not only because of the absence of Igarashi’s drawing but due to Nagita’s failure to present a gripping story with a strong narrative infrastructure. Everything is so vague and ambiguous. Nagita has reminded her readers that we should use our imagination but we also need a bit of text and context to have some solid ground to build our interpretations.

I just want to clarify again that I don’t have any issue whether “anohito” is Terry or Albert; on the contrary, I would be pleased if there was a resolution to this story-once and for all-and we all finally knew the identity of “anohito”.
Moreover, when I state my perspective that I find the novel weak and flat, it’s got nothing to do with identity of Candy’s partner or husband during the Interbellum. In other words, whether this man turns out to be Terry or Albert, I still consider this novel to be below par in terms of narrative quality as it severely lacks in congruence, coherency, and adequate character development.
As you have eloquently explained, the aforementioned story is way too vague. I’m not supporting the notion that writers have to “pamper” their readers and spoon-feed them as if their infants or toddlers. Instead, any sort of “puzzle” or “whodunit” is fine as long as there is some form of logical trajectory within the narrative or story-line itself.
Nevertheless, I’m looking forward to find out more about this new Spanish translation. Some say that it’s going to be more of a version than an exact translation but this info hasn’t been verified yet.

Yes, those rumors have been circulating about the Spanish translation. It seems that the Italian translation was the closest to the original Japanese, whereas both the French and the Spanish translators have taken some of their own liberties to the text. I have the impression that the Spanish version will be favorable towards Terry as the French version was favorable towards Albert. Both have been endorsed by the author herself so it’ll be interesting to read about this new interpretation.
Those are such beautiful illustrations! It’s such a pity that Keiko Nagita and Yumiko Igarashi hurled themselves into such an intense legal conflict because their collaboration produced such high quality work. The CCFS novel on its own it so poor without Igarashi’s drawings. However, Igarashi should have also acknowledged and respected the copyright laws which support Nagita’s rights as she’s the writer of this fabulous story.
On a further note, there have been some rumors circulating amongst some pro-Terry fans on social media that the Spanish translation of the CCFS states that “anohito” is Terry. However, the editor of the Spanish translation makes it clear the name of “anohito” is not revealed and implies it could be Terry or Albert. The editor has a “soft spot” for Anthony but he seems to like Terry and be very much fond of Albert. The interview can be found on YouTube. If you want, I could post the link. Hi Myra, I’ve watched that interview on YT and the editor never mentions the identity of Candy’s partner in the mid-1930s. Instead, he elaborates on the fact that the CC Hispanic community is much larger than any other worldwide and he’s right about that, especially when it comes to the anime rather than the manga. It’s so silly that certain Terry zealots would cook up such a ridiculous rumour. As in all the novels translated so far, the identity of ano hito is never revealed and the Spanish translation is no exception. Those Terry zealots will have to deal with that indisputable fact.
Exactly. As mentioned above, the editor differentiated his own personal preference from the structure of the novel. He makes it clear that he’s a fan of the story but he also makes it perfectly clear that the readers must be content with Candy being happy with her “anohito”, whomever he may be. Therefore, the name of this mystery man remains concealed in the Spanish translation too.

Unfortunately, there is a marketing scheme and that’s keeping Anohito’s name a mystery, hence, encouraging and perpetuating this tediously long-term bickering between the Terry and Albert fans. The Terry fans believe that Nagita does’t want to reveal the name of Anohito because she doesn’t want to hurt the Albert fans. Seriously? Is that all the Terry fans can come up with? What a pitifully lame excuse.. If Nagita wanted Terry to be Anohito, she would have stated his name openly, clearly and directly.
Lakewood, seriously, if that was the reason then it’s pathetic indeed. I was told that when CCFS was first published in Japan, the mysterious identity of Anohito had given Terry fans hope but offended Albert fans. However, as more and more people had read the novel, the bickering dissipated over time. 😉

My partner and I watched the interview about an hour ago and it was quite informative. The sound quality was below par but that YouTube channel is just a minor one and it can’t afford any elaborate sound equipment, apparently. Nonetheless, the editor of the Spanish translation was more than eager to answer quite a few queries albeit all too careful not to tread upon the controversial “Anohito” topic. Instead, he left that “door” open to both Terry and Albert to be able to claim that “title”.
I scrolled down the comment section and I was surprised to read many pro-Albert comments. Tbh, I didn’t expect that because I had also considered the Spanish-speaking CC fans to be predominantly pro-Terry. Ironically, the pro-Terry and the pro-Albert comments were roughly the same. The disappointing aspect was that certain pro-Terry folk were too persistent and repetitive, hence, going after each and every pro-Albert comment. It as rather annoying, however, I’m not surprised. It’s ridiculous that the pro-Terry folk continued their extremely long rants about Terry being “Anohito”, however, the editor himself made it crystal-clear that the identity of this man will remain a mystery and it could be either Terry or Albert.
Some of the pro-Terry folk seem to be in complete denial.

They’re actually just a handful but they keep on spamming the comment section with their delusional and nonsensical claims. I got bored after a couple of minutes and went back to watching Trevor Noah. Lol

My partner and I simply skimmed through the comment section because there was nothing new to extract from it apart from the repetitive arguments between the fans.
We enjoyed the interview, nonetheless.The only hurdle was the poor sound quality. He seems to have enjoyed translating the novel and the Spanish fans will finally have the CCFS in their own language to read.

I read the various comments about everything. I saw the interwiew of Arechi Manga. On the Andrew forum we have a complete debryfient.
Carles quotes Anthony’s name in a specific context and not because of his preference for him.
At the start of the interview, Carles was about to reveal the name of a new license (a Manga).
They know he can’t reveal who he is, but Carles knows who he is (just by reading the novel).
This is what the guys say:
It’s time to reveal the name of the new license, Candy Candy 2- Albert’s return.
At that moment, everyone starts to laugh and so does Carles.
They ask him if he will make a poster or t-shirts for Albert. He replies that nothing can be done with images and that they would hesitate to make Albert or Terry, they all laugh again.
And Carles says the safest thing to mention is Anthony.
Anthony is dead and there is no problem saying his name.
The quote from the subtitle Candy Candy 2 Albert’s return made a fan of Terry jump who followed the live interview … 😤🤣 She insulted the production of Archie Manga and was fired from interview.
But it is understood that Albert is anohito
Remember that Nagita said the story of Anohito and Candy hadn’t written it.
Obviously, the investigators are sarcastic when they say Candy Candy 2 – The return of “Albert ☺️.
Because they are waiting for the reaction of some fans. 🤣
Anyway, Arechi Manga suggests that if he had to subtitle the second part of the novel Cfs … Their choice falls on this title: Candy Candy 2- Albert’s return.
It doesn’t make you think of the second title of Pika’s novel: Candy -The prince of the hill approved by Nagita.🤩👏👍
Obviously, the translators, when they translate, immediately see who is Candy’s famous “IL”, but they don’t reveal it to respect Nagita’s wish to maintain the ambiguity. It was only in the Italian version that the translator wanted to play with ambiguity to deceive the fans … (In Paris a girl from Pika told me that the Italian translator was a Pro Terry that’s why the Terryfans tell anyone who wants to hear that the Italian translation is closer to the Japanese version.)

Nagita tells us a beautiful story through the love of Candy and Albert where she says she was inspired by Papa Longue Jambes…A book that she likes very much especially the epistolary form in Cfs that Nagita chose to transcribe by the epilogue the wonderful exchange of letters between Candy and Albert.
In the interwiew Carles also tells that she loves the story of Candy and that she loves the story of Papa Longue Jambes and Anne of Green Gables as much as Nagita…By this choice she clearly shows that she has understood the essence of the story.
During Nagita’s visit in Paris the Terryfans questioned everything Nagita could say to Albert’s fans calling them a liar, arguing only what Nagita could say to Terryfans like them. These fans are desperate as they pushed the English Nila Candy /Terry forum that had existed for over 20 years closed 😯🙄 only because the administrator suggested that Albert might be Anohito after meeting Keiko Nagita in Paris and reading his French translation. Nila had to close her site because of their insult and harassment of her. These Terryfans are desperate because deep down inside they know that Candy chose Albert in her last letter of the epilogue where she signs “With love” and her happiness is now in the present tense … Her happiness is now with her Prince of the Hill.
Many of her fans have not read the manga or the epilogue in Cfs. And those who have bought it have stopped their reading at the only 5 lines letter from Terry to Candy saying that it was the
end of the book …Preferring to ignore the other 41 pages of the novel which is the epilogue .
They boycotted the second volume French Candy -Le prince sur la Colline and called on other incredulous fans not to buy the novel .I am curious to see if they intend to do the same with the Spanish translation where the novel fits in one volume🤔😜 or do they intend to tear out the pages of the epilogue to avoid reading the exchange of letters between Candy and Albert. This exchange of letters that Nagita says she placed at the end of the story to create a greater impact on the readers.
In Paris, when Medhi Bénabar asked Nagita why she had chosen the epistolary form in Cfs? Nagita answered I like to write letters and receive them. Personally I am delighted that Nagita was chosen the couple Candy and Albert to share her passion for letters through the epilogue. Another sign that Albert is the person who makes Candy’s heart beat but also that of Nagita. 🤩🤗
@Louna 97 : You comment provides a lot of interesting information. Did you attend the book presentation in Paris? If so, could you provide details? Have you got links for the information you have provided so far? I would be grateful if you could provide a list of links for all of us to look into.
On a final note, I agree with you about the editor just joking about the “Return of Albert 2”. I honestly can’t believe that some Terry-fans were so stupid to believe that he was being serious. You could easily hear everyone, including the editor, having a good chuckle out of that comment.
If I was in Paris and I could talk at length with Keiko Nagita and the Pika Edition team. I have already provided on the M’s Puddles website English translations of the French version of the novel Cfs. I am also French and of course I live in France.
@Louna 97 : It would have been wise to arrange a live-streaming on YouTube where everyone within the CC community could present their queries to Keiko Nagita herself. I doubt that she will appear at any book festival due to COVID-19. She is over 70 years of age and she’s regarded as a vulnerable member of our society with regards to becoming infected with COVID-19. However, if all members of the CC community have equal access to the aforementioned live-streaming and transcripts, then no one would be able to present his or her own opinion or distorted interpretations. Hopefully, Nagita will seriously consider offering the CC community this equal access to her knowledge and insight into her own work.
Perhaps Arechi could collaborate with Keiko Nagita to arrange the aforementioned live-stream/interview as this would aid the CC community and, hopefully, resolve the long-term arguments.

Hello Myra today on the Arechi Manga website you can read an extract from the novel Cfs in Spanish, as Pika did last year for French fans in 2019..A forum fan Andrew had asked for this gesture to Arechi as a gift for the Spanish- speaking fans for their patience … Yesterday, Arechi Manga announced a surprise for Candy’s birthday today 🤩🤗 well done … Cherry on the cake Arechi Manga has planned a new release date for May 8. Arechi Manga has provided a very nice gift to the CC fans. There are various rumours circulating that Nagita will provide more information about Candy’s lover in the 1930s. Is this true? Will she say who it is or will she just provide a bit more detail as she did in the French version?

I was told the Italian translator had no background knowledge of Candy Candy, but whoever said that might be wrong. I have learned that the Italian version has misleading passages though.
Sounds like the Spanish publisher knows what they are talking about, and the title they give to book 2 is a big hint to me lol… Everyone knows that Anohito returned home at the end of CCFS 😊
I watched the interview too and enjoyed it. RamenParaDos is going to arrange another live-streaming with the Arechi Manga editor next week but this time, they’ll be talking about the 1980s Candy Candy anime.

@Louna 97: Thanks for sharing. I’ve been searching for this video myself. I’ve read the transcript but it’s full of notifications that the voices coming from the members of the audience are muffled. The transcript seems to be incomplete. That’s why I’ll check out how YouTube has transcribed it. If the voices are too muffled, however, even YouTube software won’t be able to have it transcribed.
I’ll also ask the same question as @Irana93. At which point does Nagita talk about Candy and Albert in this video?

I’ve been looking for that controversial video where Nagita talks about Candy and Albert having developed a romantic relationship. Others claim that this video doesn’t exist whilst others claim that it does but the sound quality is poor. Even if the sound quality if poor, I can get my best friend who’s a computer “wizard” to decipher what’s being said. For him, it’s a piece of cake but he needs to have the footage.
I watched this video myself, Sarah, but I think Sweet Poupee removed it later unfortunately.

Hi Sarah, I think you referred to the short video in which Sweet Poupee herself asked Nagita sensei at her booth about Candy and Albert, whether he was brother or father figure to Candy. A young man was sitting right beside the author as her interpreter, but she answered the questions directly without his help.
If I remember correctly, Nagita sensei said “No” and added that the two had feelings for each other. Then the author moved her finger in a circular motion near her head, saying something like “I didn’t write that (explicitly) but use your imagination”.
Mind you, I couldn’t hear the conversation but I could see Nagita sensei’s facial expression and hand movement. Her actions matched the video description — the conversation between Sweet Poupee and the author.
If I remember correctly, @Sweet Poupee has contributed to your blog in the comment section. Maybe she could re-upload that video in question so we could all check it out for ourselves. Just for the record, I take your word in good faith. However, there are a handful of crazed fans which desperately doubt everything and try to twist and turn situations to their own advantage feeding their own bias.
I know a few CC fans have watched this video uploaded by Sweet Poupee, and I honestly don’t know why she took it down. As you said, there are crazy fans out there, and who knows? Perhaps they had harrassed her.
In fact, I mentioned this video last year in a post and left a few comments in various other posts about it. @Sarah, I think the sensible readers do not need a video to prove Candy and Albert had romantic feelings for each other. For Candy, she wouldn’t be in her right mind to call her brother or father her Prince on the Hill. For Albert, he clearly said to Candy he had forgotten the adoption and that he didn’t want people to mistake her for his sister. If she was just a friend or sister, why didn’t he return her diary much much earlier or in a casual way?
It’s ludicrous that these same crazed fans are more than willing to desperately cling onto a dubious note as indisputable evidence; yet, they’re in complete denial when it comes to an entire series of correspondence which constitutes compelling evidence in its own right. These are the same crazed fans who rely on their own emotions but constantly question the sensible and logical arguments presented by others. This is the reason why they’re incapable of answering crucial questions. Instead, they go off on a tangent about conspiracy theories and dodgy situations which probably never happened as there is no proof whatsoever. If anyone continues to pose questions demanding for proof, those crazed fans stoop even lower and become pitifully deranged.
To be clear and precise, I demand from everyone indisputable evidence as others demand from me. If certain members of the CC community want to be taken seriously, they’ll have to act their age and stop resorting to hysterical tantrums. Instead, they’ll have to provide undeniable and concrete evident to their arguments-just as they demand from others to search every nook and cranny to confirm their own arguments and interpretations. Some of those crazed fans believe that they’re entitled but that’s all in their own deranged little head and nothing more than that.

Just to let you know that I’ve found the video in question and downloaded it in case it gets taken down again. If it’s alright with Ms Puddle, I would be happy to post the link as long as it’s still available. If not, I’ll be glad to email this video to whomever is interested. I’ve already emailed this video to 2 good friends of mine who are from Japan as the dialogue in the video seems to be in Japanese. Those 2 friends of mine are indifferent to Candy Candy so their take on this will be impartial, I suppose. I’ve requested from them to provide a full transcript and verbatim translation in English. The sound quality isn’t as bad as I had thought it would be. You can easily hear what Keiko Nagita is saying but the problem is that I don’t know Japanese. Her body language seems to suggest that she’s delighted to answer the fan’s question and the fan seems to be delighted with Keiko Nagita’s response. But that’s as far as I’ll go. I’ll wait for my friends’ feedback on this video and notify you in due time. It’s a short video so it shouldn’t take my friends too long to decipher it.

I can’t agree with you more, Myra, that it’s a pity to all CC fans the two talented ladies can no longer work together. I won’t say CCFS is poor on its own though, even though it does require readers to have some background knowledge of the manga version. Yet I sincerely wish Igarashi can start illustrating the new passages in CCFS.
That would have been fantastic but I sincerely doubt that those two ladies are in speaking terms after their long-term legal battle. Much as I admire Igarashi’s drawings, she became too consumed with greed. I’ve read that Nagita was willing to provide some form of financial reconciliation or agreement with Igarashi but the latter declined and persisted with the legal battle.
To the best of my knowledge, all the editors from the Italian, French and Spanish translations have explained that Igarashi does not want to provide any illustrations for Nagita’s novel. There are very strict copyright issues and the editors could not get approval.
That’s what I’ve read too. Who knows? Maybe they’ll decide to put their differences aside and collaborate when an authoritative English translation is endorsed.
It’s unlikely the book will be translated in English due to its obscurity in the English-speaking world (North America, UK, Ireland, Australia).
That’s true, considering how difficult it was for the book to get translated and edited in Spanish. The Spanish (Latin American) CC community is regarded as the largest of all the other ones.
No doubt about that, Lynn. Let’s just hope the fans will read the novel with an open mind rather than biased or unwarranted assumptions.
I hope so too but as long as Nagita remains silent about the name of Candy’s mystery man, the CC community will remain divided. What’s worse is that this is a shrinking community which is getting even smaller after all the long-term internet fighting.

Hi Lynn and Anita, Candy Candy is not the only story with fans divided. There are always fans who are not satisfied with the outcomes of their favourite novels. For example, not all readers like the ending of “Little Women” by Louisa May Alcott. Another example is “The Hunger Games” trilogy. Perhaps it’s a different kind of fighting amongst fans, but I have a feeling that even if Nagita sensei chose to announce the identity of Anohito, some fans would continue to pressure her to change. 😅
That’s true. The problem with Nagita’s novel is the ambiguity. She suggests that her fans use their imagination but that’s pointless when her own story lacks in narrative and plot. The final epistolary section has not been used effectively by Nagita. Whether anohito is Terry or Albert, there’s no substantial narrative to elucidate how Candy tied the knot with either or these two men. We are left to “imagine” how this came about. On the other hand, “Little Women” and the “Hunger Games” trilogy have a specific narrative which is of high quality irrespective of the online controversies ensued amongst the fandom.
Yes, Anita, as much as I like the epilogue, unfortunately I agree with you that the epistolary section is not that great, mainly (at least to me) due to lack of interactions between Candy and others and her heartwarming days with Albert in the House of Magnolia. 🙁
That being said, I personally think who Anohito is can’t be more obvious. Candy’s love began with POTH and ended with the same guy. As Nagita sensei mentioned before, the story hasn’t changed. 😉
There’s much missing from the two narrative sections as well. The problem isn’t just with the third epistolary section. I also don’t see the point to the change in structure. Even Terry’s short letter in the end falls flat.
Hi Anita, I have a post that displayed the reason why the third section changed the structure in the old novel. Apparently, it’s the same in CCFS but some contents of the letters have changed. For example, Candy’s letter to Anthony was much less emotional in the old novel.
Does the old novel offer more detail to the relationship between Candy and Terry? Does it provide more detail about the growing bond between Candy and Albert during their stay at the Magnolia?
I haven’t read the old novel myself, but as I explained in the other comment, the formats and styles are similar. However, I forgot to mention Terry’s brief letter in CCFS. Apparently, Susanna’s obituary and Terry’s letter following that were not in the old novel. Also, Nagita sensei likely played a trick in using letters, making some people believe Terry’s letter was sent after Susanna’s death. Yet, the letters are not necessarily arranged in chronological order.
Thank you for the information. It would have been great if an English translation existed for both the old and the new novel so everyone who’s interested can compare the two.
