Artbook titled Candy’s Love
I was both happy and relieved to hear from my friend CandyAlbert, who contacted me recently, chatting about Candy Candy’s poems written by Nagita sensei. She kindly let me share them on my blog, and I have chosen this one below, written by Kyoko Mizuki (Nagita sensei’s pen name). As you can see, it’s one of Yumiko Igarashi’s famous drawings for Candy Candy, which was displayed in the original Candy Candy ending song.
You can find the original Japanese poem, with translations to Spanish and English, on CandyAlbert’s Facebook page, Candy y Albert, el Príncipe de la Colina. Here I’d like to show you the same image but with Chinese translation, even though it has a couple of minor mistakes, because I like the title of this artbook — “Candy’s Love”. Yes, who else? 😉 ❤️
This is my own translation to English:
Who are you, really?
The prince I met on the hill,
On the day when the flower petals were dancing.
That, was it a dream?
Yet, in my hand is
The silver badge my prince has dropped --
When I close my eyes
A gentle smile will surface in my mind
You're prettier (more cute) when you smiled...
When oh when
can I see
Prince on the Hill --
First, I don’t know how exactly to translate the sentence about the flower petals dancing. In the poem Nagita sensei wrote りらりらと, which translates to “in the manner of…” However, my limited knowledge tells me りらりら is often associated with rain. Perhaps it’s similar to the soft rain pitter-pattering sounds? Please correct me if I”m wrong. For your information,りら by itself can mean the lilacs or the violet color of this kind of flowers. Please use your own imagination to picture how the flower petals dancing in what manner. 😉
You might want to ask, “What are the translation mistakes in the Chinese version?” It’s about the badge. It was written that the prince has handed the badge to Candy, which we all know was not true. In the original Japanese poem, it said that he had dropped (lost) it. The other mistake, a minor one, is about what the prince had said to Candy about her smile. He said that when she smiled she was prettier (cuter). In the story he compared that to her crying, but this part was omitted in the poem.
When translating the last section of the original poem to English, it is simply “when can I see Prince on the Hill”, but the nuance is lost. Hence I added a bit of emphasis. Also I translated to “see” instead of “meet” because she already met him. Another choice is “encounter” or “meet with”. For your interest, you can read more about いつになったらあえるの
Candy Candy is one of the unforgettable anime of my childhood. Sailor Moon and Candy Candy hold the most special places in my heart. It was not possible to retrieve and read the CCFS. In both the manga, the anime, and the book, I didn’t understand why Albert didn’t tell Candy when he regained his memory. Ardlay not wanting to return to his family etc. It doesn’t satisfy me very much. As a result, he was surprised by Candy’s offer to live together, having lost his memory, and said, “We are not even related to you.” When his memory returned, there was no need to go to the Ardlay mansion. He could run things remotely, like when he hid it from Candy. Moreover, it was considered wrong for them to stay in the same house because they were not relatives, but since they were father and daughter on paper, no one could say anything to them. In the anime, he said to Candy: “I went to Africa when you fell in love with Terry.” Since his face was not facing us, his facial expression could not be understood. I think he doesn’t have feelings for Candy because she’s not an adult yet. After Candy dropped out of school and Terry handed over the diary to him, he wanted to travel all over the continent and tell Candy his identity, the truth that he had been hiding from everyone for all these years, even his nephews. But somehow when her memory came back, she didn’t want to say it. Of course, the memory loss caused Albert to look at Candy from a different perspective, getting to know her from scratch and changing something in himself.

Hello everyone. I have been following this program for a long time. Reading the company’s analysis of Candy and Albert makes me happy with this choice.
Thanks for the feedback 😃
Hello girls this is a debriefing of my friend Yuleni Paredes on the first video where Carles answers questions from the fans. Follow up on my analysis.
Louna Neella, this is 75% of Carles’ first video.
When you edit a translated novel, what exactly does this edition include? – Eleanna Sakka
– Carles: I mean they are just a channel that passes a different language. They don’t change the style of the novel in any way, nor the structure. It can only do that Nagita, which is the one that marks that there is a prologue, that there is an epilogue, which is going to be divided into three parts, plus a few extra chapters that serves as an interludio between one part and the other, it’s purely a decision of the writer, because it’s she who decides to place some elements of the book to look for effects for the reader. Is editing a translated novel something that is a personal creative task or does it follow a strict set of rules? – Éleana Sakka
-Carles: In publishing, there are two different ways to modify, the first is the most creative is the one that works directly with the author, that yes, the publisher has much more control to suggest changes in the text of the novel. In the case of a translated novel this does not happen, they do not have the possibility to change the text at any time. The only thing they can do is to translate the original text as faithfully as possible. In this case, the only thing they have brought is to add those little details – the centimetres at the end of each chapter, the small details at the beginning of each part that they use to give a more classical touch to the text. “My interest is to give the book a 19th century look”. Why did he decide to release the volume in a single volume instead of two as in previous translations? – KeikNagita fans.
– Carles : They decided to do it in one volume, because it seemed the most logical for this story. The story is circular, starting at the moment Candy opens the chest full of memories in the first chapter of the first part and ends with Candy closing that same chest of memories, maps, objects and keeping them. This shows the separation of two parts where it made a lot of sense at his original moment in Japan, when he gives him the first part of the book and when the second part is already writing. Once the book is already written complete, it doesn’t make much sense to release it in two parts. Will there be a second edition with modifications?
-Will there be an illustrated edition with the participation of comic book talent? – Raquel Silva.
Carles: This is what we expect, that there may be a second edition with modifications, it will surely be a reprint of the book if sales continue with the pace that is going now. So, a small reprint will be made with the small modification of Candy’s birthday, who have already said that it does not change anything in history. Yes, I would like to make an illustrated edition of drawings. Of course, all this depends on the author’s desire to allow them to make illustrations: the western style, manga style. I saw illustrations very marked in the retina, that is to say very fixed in the spirit and you already know that we cannot use those of Igarashi, therefore images which do not disappoint the public. However, he considers that it is too early to ask something like that.
-Question: What is your opinion on the structure of the novel? Is it circular like in the manga? Why does it have three parts? Is the epilogue the outcome of the novel? Candy and Albert, the Prince of the hill.
-Carles: Yes, the novel has a circular structure, but it’s also a novel that is very much marked by each part that indicates a change in Candy’s life. It’s the part that takes place in Lakewood that is the part of Candy’s relationship with Anthony, and is marked from the beginning of Candy’s childhood until Anthony’s death, which changes Candy’s personality from being a happy girl . Now becomes a slightly sad girl. The second part is the one that takes place in Saint Paul that tells the story of Candy’s relationship with Terry and there we see how Candy partly thanks to Terry evolves and manages to overcome this internal pain, this brings Terry very close because Terry is a character who also feels a great internal pain and the story ends with a decision that, Candy until now has always been that although she is a girl of great personal strength, she has always been moved by decisions of other characters : the Legans when they adopt her, when the Britters adopt Annie, Anthony’s death which is also not a decision, When she was sent to Mexico … When she is kicked out of Saint Paul until Terry decides to save her to stay in Saint Paul’s. That’s when Candy makes her first important personal decision, which is to leave school and shape her life, which is what gives shape to the third part of the story that we see a more mature Candy in which Candy evolves into what must be Candy, a nurse, a person who is involved in helping other colleagues, in what develops this relationship with the amnesic Albert, and then with the discovery that Albert is Uncle Grandpa William. These three parts are very different from each other. In the first part he makes a first person narrative style, in the second part it’s a mixture of first and third person with the diary that Candy writes for uncle grandfather William and the third part is developed exclusively epistolary, only letters, anyway, we have an adult Candy who gives the novel a circular structure: as it begins. Candy at the end of the novel what he does is keep all the memories. For me it’s the story of Candy remembering. Her past. Candy begins to open the vaults of memories. We accompany her through all those memories of how her life has been. And she ends up closing the memories and ends up with Anthony’s letter. She says while you’re stringing memories , you’ll always stay alive. Closes the memories so she is already ready to start a new life at that moment, a life in which she is already a full person, that she doesn’t need anyone else, nothing else but herself.
Did you analyze the novel before publishing? -Yes, I did. – Sharito Lopez
-Carles: Obviously, analyzing the text of the novel is one more job for the translators than for the publisher, I think there is a misunderstanding in this whole theme of Anohito and all this secrecy of the husband’s name . I don’t think Keiko Nagita has made this novel as a novel in which the reader has to collect a series of leads to find out, who is Candy’s husband. I think it’s a mistake to read the novel, when analyzing it. For me all the elements that are at home, where Candy the Daffodils lives, the works of Shakespeare, the painting of (Slim) Pony Hill do not refer to Anohito, nor to his beloved; but it does refer to Candy, to his past … All these elements of Candy’s past and they are elements that allow us to put ourselves in the mind throughout the novel and accompany her during the reading, so I do not think we should put so much importance on the tracks it’s not because Keiko and the translator try so hard not to say the name of Candy’s husband that we should not try to find out who he is …
Louna, I made you, go on.
———————————————–
Yuleni … Thank you very much, everything is clearer for me … It was frustrating to know that there were important things that were explained by Carles to questions from the fans. And that with the language barrier, I couldn’t take advantage of “now it is.” Yuneli, on the whole I totally agree with what is said … And the fixation of Anohito is not the subject …. Nagita had already explained it in the past by saying that Candy is a courageous girl, she learns from adversities she went through all her life and she has to face a lot of pain:
– Anthony’s death
-The final break with Terry
– And finally, Candy realizes the importance of Albert in his life, the one who comforts, supports and encourages him. The only one left in its present.
It is by reflecting on what each of the 3 loves has brought him in his life. Candy makes a decision … As the French novel on the back of the cover confirms: it’s time for the girl to think about her future. And to do this, she will have to find the strength to free herself from her past. It’s time for Candy to make a decision. But the path to happiness is not easy and can sometimes take unexpected detours. Candy has matured and that’s when the epilogue comes into play and makes sense ..As Candy’s last letter to Albert shows her determination to leave her past behind, which she explains to Anthony in the letter she wrote to him.
Carles confirms that many have misinterpreted the novel and I fully agree with her, she also says that readers get lost looking for clues in Candy’s house, daffodils, Shakespeare books, etc. And that according to her, these are not clues left by Nagita to identify Candy’s husband (Anohito). That all these things are personal objects that represent Candy’s past and do not necessarily belong to her husband …
This point of view of Carles is not negligible, especially since it comes from his perception of editor.

Michelle ..I said a Terryfans suggested the Magnolia flower for Albert. I didn’t say the idea for the trailer was Terryfans.
OK. Thanks.
After having despised and criticized Pika Edition for having made a bad translation by favoring Albert pointing him out as Candy’s husband by the different clues of the novel Cfs … Remove all the ambiguity of the story, according to them … By showing Terry as Candy’s ex-boyfriend … with whom Candy has turned this page in her life.
Today the Terryfans have decided to take revenge by trying to manipulate the Spanish translation. Taking advantage of the opportunity offered by Archie Manga to ask Carles questions about the translation …to suggest to modify the novel and present Terry as Candy’s husband. And to eliminate all evidence in favor of Albert as Anohito. …Already shouting victory 😲🤔
Honestly I think the Arechi Manga edition .is too much attentive to the absurdities of certain fans. During the Italian and French translation. …The editorials did their translation without the fans interfering with their work and once finished put the books on the market. Leaving the fans to make their own deduction of the story once they read the Cfs novel in its entirety.
I don’t know why but I have reservations about this translation 🤔🙄. I think we are only 8 days away from the release of the novel. That Arechi Manga should let the fans get the novel, read their own copy first … And then offer this kind of discussion where each fan could discuss with references of the pages in hand. Although the editor Carles seems to understand the story well suggesting even in his interview with the fans to read the references that Nagita site which inspired it … Especially Papa Longue for a better understanding of the story and to have clearly specify that there is a romance between Candy and Albert.
For my part I can consider myself lucky to have talked directly to Keiko Nagita in Paris who came to promote his book and validate the French translation. …Nagita answered my questions directly…And told me that I wouldn’t be disappointed with the 2 volume Candy – The Prince on the Hill with the different details about the character of Albert… And I wasn’t disappointed.
I agree, @Louna97. I think there’s no point for Arechi Manga to discuss the translations with fans before the novel is published. It doesn’t sound right or professional.
Regardless of translations, it’s always clear the Candy Candy Final Story is more or less the same story as Candy Candy manga or the old CC novel, just with some changes here and there. The readers get glimpses of Candy’s life in her thirties and more interactions between Candy and Albert after his confession on the hill, the most significant of which is that Candy in her letter to Little Bert had apparently moved on and declared her happiness with her prince. 💕

n the Arechi Manga trailer… The magnolia flower representing Albert was suggested by a Terryfans Anet White who had pointed out that the roses🌹🌹 represent Anthony, the daffodils Terry and that Albert did not have flowers according to her.🤔 This Terryfan had said to attribute this flower to Albert to please according to her the Alberfans 😁. Provocation or good intention? You never know. Coming from this particular person.
What do you honestly think? 😁
Arechi Manga seems to be quite influenced from the point of view of certain Fan.🤔🙄
Nagita never established a direct link between daffodils and Terry, and even less so Albert’s magnolia flower is not written anywhere in Cfs. This choice only commits Arechi Manga.🙄
As far as I am concerned, the roses 🌹🌹 have always been linked to the Ardlay Anthony family, Rosemary and Albert. As this link shows.
Albert continued to care for them in memory of his sister Rosemary and his nephew Anthony… and he planted roses🌹🌹 at the scene of Anthony’s accident in the old novel.
Of course if we look at the bright side of things … This magnolia flower can represent the coexistence of Candy and Albert in the apartment, where Albert falls in love with Candy and Candy realizes that she can’t live without him too..❤😛. And that her happiness is now with him as she confirms this in her last letter of the epilogue. page 254.

Bonjour Louna97! I have approved this comment, and thanks for providing the links. I’ll remove your duplicate comment soon.
I don’t like the fact that they’ve used magnolia either, but just like you said, it reminds us of the apartment building where Albert and Candy’s friendship evolved 💕
Some people are easily distracted by unnecessary things. The point of the story is not to find out which flower is attributed to the male character… but who Candy’s husband is between Albert and Terry, Anthony having died. Arechi Manga in this video attributes the sentence ofS the prince of the hill to Anthony for the smile, what Albert said to Candy during their first meeting on Pony Hill. You’re prettier when you smile than when you cry… And trying to do well …Arechi Manga mixes his brushes.
Sorry for the duplicate comments, I thought it hadn’t been published … oops!
It’s alright, @Louna97. No worries.
Yes you’re right. I don’t understand why some people are bent on associating flowers with male characters. To me, the real point of the story is that Candy not only survived the difficulties in her life but was finally happy with someone she loved. 💖
Judging by the enraged comments of the Terry-fans, there is no way that this book-trailer had been suggested by them. Until now, the Terry-fans were gloating that Anthony and Terry have got a flower assigned to them by Arechi but Albert doesn’t have one. Therefore, with this trailer, they got humiliated and that’s why they’ve been inundating the comment sections airing their grievances against Arechi.
In this book-trailer, Candy can be heard calling out the voices of the three and not two men that she loves whilst there is a flower accompanying the name of each man she loves following a chronological sequences: Candy calls out to Anthony and the image of the rose is displayed; then Candy calls out to Terry and the image of the daffodil is shown; finally, Candy calls out to Albert and the image of the magnolia is revealed.
It would be highly unlikely, if not impossible, for the Terry-fans to recommend such a book-trailer unless they have decided to become Albert-fans and join the club.😉
Well said, Anita. Needless to mention that the specific fan Louna is talking about has posted some really angry comments against this book-trailer. The bottom-line is that none of the Terry-fans are pleased with this book-trailer because it destroys their argument that the relationship between Candy and Albert is insignificant. Whether they want to accept it or not, the entire CC community is well-aware that the relationship between Candy and Albert was a bromance which later on turned into a romance.
Girls I said that a Terryfans suggested the Magnolia flower for Albert. I didn’t say the idea for the trailer was Terryfans.
Terryfans are very vicious by attaching Albert to a flower other than roses. .. They want to deduce that the rose garden in the house of Candy and her husband is not related to Albert. .. And use the quote from the daffodils link to Terry according to them to rule out Albert as Candy’s husband.
Of course Arechi Manga is far from suspecting their Russian because they do not yet know what some of them are worth … However Arechi Manga having cited Albert as the last man in Candy’s life does not please them since much continues to deny the romantic relationship between Candy and Albert and prefers to keep him like his father … Always with the aim that Albert does not overshadow Terry.
Bonjour @Louna97, @Anita et @Michelle,
I wouldn’t worry too much about the video or what the desperate Terry fans are still trying at this point when the book is about to be available to the public in a few days. As @Anita and @Michelle said, we have read the novel ourselves and know the flowers, including daffodils or roses, are not even important to the story plot.
Really, what’s the fuss? 😅
Though I must admit it’s somewhat entertaining to read about Terry fans’ strong reactions to seeing Candy’s three loves in the right order. Albert is Candy’s destined love after all. I won’t be too surprised if one day these people suggest associating horses with male characters because both Anthony and Terry went horse-riding with Candy lol… 😆
I’d suggest we leave the self-deceiving people alone; let them sulk and throw tantrums like spoiled brats.
Glad you’ve clarified @Louna 97. Your previous comment appeared to state that the Arechi book-trailer was an idea coming from a Terry fan.
Regarding the flowers, this is just an idea coming from the Arechi team. Nowhere in the CCFS is Terry associated with daffodils or Albert with magnolias. The only characters identified to a flower are Anthony and Candy.
The arguments coming from some of those Terry fans are not only weak but utterly groundless. The author herself has already dispelled any of those Terry fan claims that the Shakespearean and daffodil references are linked to Terry. Instead, Nagita said in her latest interview in Paris in 2019 that all her characters in the CCFS are linked to Shakespeare because she adores his plays. She also said that she loves flowers and they don’t indicate a specific character but natural seasons. Flower references help the reader identify what season it is and not which CCFS character is being mentioned.
Therefore, only Anthony and Candy can be linked to roses and that’s obvious in the text.
As for Terry and Albert, they are not linked to flowers. Instead, all the textual evidence reveals Candy likening Terry to the earth and to the grass. She even says that Terry smells like the grass. She never mentions that he smells like daffodils. She once mentioned that he looked like a stone on the ground amongst the daffodils because he’s dark. In her description of Albert, Candy relates him to the color blue and she absolutely adores the color of his eyes which remind her of the clear blue lakes, rivers and skies. If we were to pin-point these three men in Candy’s life, Anthony would be the fragrant and beautiful rose (as Candy is), Terry would be the sensual and musky earth, and Albert would be the ethereal blue sky and the blue river which is always in a state of flux (just as Albert always is).
Hi Ms Puddle, Louna, Anita and Michelle!
I agree with all your points but I’ll just add that we shouldn’t forget that the most important encounter between Candy and Albert was when he saved her life from drowning in the river. Later on, Albert was working at the Blue River Zoo. Of-course, we’ve got all those blue lake, blue river, and blue sky allusions to Albert which are made not by Albert-fans but by Candy herself when she’s swooning over Albert’s beautiful blue eyes. Candy never describes what color Terry’s eyes are, however.
Good points, @Sarah!
I did try to find Candy’s description of Terry’s eye color but failed. She mentioned his dark gaze a lot though
Dark doesn’t denote a color but a shade or hue. In many cases it describes one’s state of mind or psychological condition. Presumably, what Candy meant when referring to Terry’s gaze as dark was his psychological turmoil and rage. It was that scene when she had accidentally found his mother’s photograph and he began to abuse Candy by grabbing her by the shoulders and shaking her violently. His gaze became dark when he threatened to tear her to shreds if she told anyone about his mother. It’s a very disturbing scene and reveals that dangerously violent streak in Terry’s character. Unfortunately, it’s not the first time he physically abused Candy. A man who raises his hand against a woman once will definitely do it again as in Terry’s case.
It’s indeed a very disturbing scene, @Sarah. It was this particular scene where I found Terry more violent in CCFS than depicted in the manga.
It’s mind-boggling that there are women in our contemporary times who endorse and try to justify such women-beaters as Terry. Even Nagita makes it clear in her novel that she is against such appalling crimes committed against women. Never has Nagita regarded Terry as a role model as she does Albert, Stear and George. She feels sorry for Terry but she does not endorse that violent streak embedded in his character. Women who endorse and tolerate physical violence against women are even worse than the men who commit those crimes. I wonder how those women would feel if a man assaulted their daughter the way Terry physically abused Candy. Would they continue to drool over Terry so much?
I understand your frustration, Louna, but there’s no need to waste your time with some unimportant and mentally disturbed Terry-fans. At the end of the day, their negative online reviews of the CCFS don’t financially hurt you or the Albert-fans but Keiko Nagita’s relationship with Amazon and other online stores. Her name is on those books and not yours or anyone else’s. I feel bad for her but no one can help her, sadly.
As for the Arechi Manga editorial team, I feel sorry for them too because they are constantly pleading with those ludicrous fans to stop tearing each other apart like a pack of hyenas on their Facebook page. They’ve hired moderators to delete insulting comments and they have even resorted to deleting entire posts. Their Facebook page has descended into a sewage dump due to a couple of frenzied old fans polluting their page and destroying their clout.
The situation amongst the Terry-fans is pathetic but I’m pleased that those fans are dumb enough to constantly expose and humiliate themselves. At least the CC community knows that those obsessed fans are the lowest of the low.
Yes, @Louna97, I agree with @Anita. Don’t waste your time and just ignore some fans’ mind-boggling stupidity.
I think you’ve hit the nail on the head, Anita. Those obsessed fans are living vicariously through Candy. Psychologists agree that those type of people are dissatisfied with their lives and they try to fill that void by fixating on fantasies. I’ve been hearing about how mentally disturbed some of those fans can get over Terry but I had never fathomed that they could suffer such meltdowns as they do in those Arechi Manga comment sections. I’ll be honest and admit that I had a bit of a chuckle with their emotional outbursts. Can’t believe they go full-blown hysterical over Candy Candy. I wonder what their colleagues at work would think of them if they had ever bore witness to their online tantrums and hilarious meltdowns
Totally agree with @Lynn! @Anita you’ve described exactly what’s causing this kind of troubling behaviour or emotional breakdown. This makes me wonder if they have full-time jobs. If not, they should probably devote their energy to volunteering. That might actually help them open their eyes.
Louna, you are right. Arechi Manga shouldn’t give so many liberties to fans, much less allow them to review a book which they haven’t even read yet. However, the book has already been printed and packed, ready for the bookstores, and nothing can be changed in it, even if the publishers wanted to. Even that little mistake about Candy’s birthday which was pointed out by some fans can’t be corrected now. The editors admitted that mistake, thanked the people who let them know about it, and more importantly, they apologized for it. It wouldn’t be professional or ethic to change the structure of the novel just to please some lunatics. If they want Terry to end up with Candy, let them write their own fan fictions. They have no right to interfere with Nagita’s original story.
Let’s give them some advice: Cheer up. You want Terry to be Anohito? Then use your imagination. Nagita-sensei herself has suggested it. LOL.
My greetings to everyone here!
@Ms Puddle and @Anita: I agree with you that we shouldn’t waste our time with foolish fans.
@Louna 97 and @Fay: Arechi Manga has never made any of those claims falsely circulated by certain fans. On the contrary, Arechi Manga points out that the Spanish CCFS is a faithful translation of Nagita’s book as it was published in 2010. They’ve made no changes to it apart from that date-of-birth mistake @Fay has already mentioned. It would be wise not to believe anything those crazy fans say but focus only what the official Arechi Manga statements are all about.
As for the video Arechi Manga wants to release on Facebook, it’s got nothing to do with changes made or to be made to the CCFS. It’s over. The book has been translated and no other work will be done on it apart from distributing a note with the aforesaid translation error at some point. The Arechi Manga administrators have announced that there’s going to be a video next week where editorial and translation issues are going to be discussed. If you scroll down to the replies the Arechi Manga administrators have given to comments, you’ll notice that they never respond to questions regarding interpretation but only to technical questions having to do with the editing and translating of the text. Perhaps the editor will expand a bit and provide his own interpretations of the CCFS as he did in the Ramen para Dos YouTube interviews but he always informs his audience that it’s just his opinion and not Nagita’s. He’s honest and ethical to say that his opinion would never muster the gravity and credibility that Nagita’s has because he’s not the author of the book.
@Fay: You’re right. If some delusional fans want a different story and can’t accept Nagita’s original novel, then they should create their own fanfic. Simple as that.
Thank you @Irana93 for the clarifications. 👍👏
Well said, @Fay. They can certainly use their imagination and continue to write more fanfics about daffodils or how Terry was going to reconcile with his father with help from Candy, etc.
