    Literary analysis response to something

Hi! Yes, she is an Albert fan. She mentioned in a class how she loved reading mangas growing up and said, Candy Candy. So me being me, I had to ask her 😂

Yes, so I have a deep love for reading anything from classical literature to more modern works and even fanfiction 😂.

We have an inside joke with English and film majors to see who can find more references to Shakespeare in books or movies 😂Usually, Shakespearean works are used as a foreshadowing of future events or comedic relief.

However, if Romeo and Juliet are used to reference a relationship, it foreshadows that the characters will not end up together for some tragic reason. In Candy Candy, the first foreshadowing we receive is in Scotland when Candy sees Terry’s book as she mentions Romeo and Juliet. There’s confirmation when Terry leaves for America. In the play, Romeo leaves Juliet, and the events that follow are tragic. The second foreshadowing is when Terry is now actually portraying the role of Romeo. The confirmation is the tragic event that happens with Susana. This tragic event leads to them splitting up for good. I would say that the encounter in Rockstown confirmed the relationship is over and gave the fans closure.

Now the Author mentions Hamlet in the novel, which provides further closure. When speaking about Hamlet, there are three main ways you could look at it. (I hope this isn’t a spoiler to Hamlet😂)

    1. The relationship between Hamlet and Ophelia also ends tragically. Whether you believe Hamlet truly loved Orphelia or not (that’s a separate argument 😂). The point is they did have a relationship that ended tragically because Hamlet neglected Ophelia and had other priorities. Hamlet’s duty was first to avenge his father and then everything else. We can connect this to Terry feeling a more significant duty to Susanna and choosing to stay with her over his love for Candy. By doing this, he ends their relationship just as Hamlet brought, in a way, death to Ophelia and their relationship.

    2. The possible connection between having Terry play Hamlet could symbolize them sharing the same tragic flaw. Hamlet’s tragic flaw is his inability to act. The reason there’s so much tragedy and so many people die because of his lack of taking action. Hamlet doesn’t tell anyone what is going on. Instead, he is contemplating what to do and even his existence. Terry has the same approach when the tragedy with Susana happens. He doesn’t seek help; he keeps it to himself and doesn’t know what to do. The ultimate conclusion for both is that, in a sense, they lost what they found valuable.

    3. At the end of Hamlet, everyone is dead except Horatio. Fortinbras becomes king and restores the broken realm to order. However, this was a way that Shakespeare created that full circle moment. Earlier on in the play, we learn that Hamlet’s father killed Fortinbras’ father. This is why Fortinbras was matching towards Denmark to avenge his father. However, when he arrived, he didn’t have to kill anyone because they were all dead. Many people interpret it as Hamlet being the vessel used to restore peace. Anyways, we could claim that Terry was a vessel in Candy‘s life so that she could have that full cycle moment.

In the end, I could be reaching and overanalyzing it 😂 maybe it is pretty literal, and having Terry be successful in a play could be to show that he is okay now and fully recovered from the breakup. I don’t know 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have tried to keep this short. So I didn’t go into the textual evidence and any of that. There are also a couple more different approaches. I tried my best to summarize. If you have any questions or if anything seems unclear, I am happy to clarify.

    Thank you:)

    • Anna Katerina says:

I just realized I didn’t post this as a reply to our conversation thread. I am so sorry about that. I also realized I left the title that I had saved in my notes app 🤦🏻‍♀️ and I kind of just copied and pasted it, so so sorry about that first sentence.

    • Ms Puddle says:

Thanks Anna Katerina! I must say I enjoyed reading your analyses of Terry’s character and the possible foreshadowing of future events in his life, because I’m not as familiar with literature and Shakespeare’s works as you.

Yet, I don’t necessarily agree with you re Romeo and Juliet and the subsequent breakup. Why? Susanna played Juliet in the play but she got to stay with ‘Romeo’, unlike Candy. 😉

Otherwise, thank you for sharing your thoughts with us! All I know for sure is that Terry’s character was an afterthought, as the author wanted her story to be more different from Daddy-long-legs. Yet, back then she was determined to separate Terry and Candy because she aimed to achieve the full circle ending.

      • Anna Katerina says:

Hi! Thank you very much. I guess I am just so passionate about literature, haha.

I see what you mean about Romero and Juliet. I totally agree! I think the way I saw it was that the couple had already been assigned to Candy and Terry’s foreshadowing (and usually, it relates to one couple only). Thus, I didn’t see it related to her relationship with Terry. But I understand what you are saying, and it makes sense.

Also, I am a theater nerd, and it is a common saying that those who play Romero and Juliet are bound to have a real relationship (similar to how you don’t mention Macbeth before a show because it brings bad luck). I guess that would apply to how Terry and Susana end up together. I find it funny how Shakespearean works have created so many superstitions 😂

Funny enough, Daddy Long Legs was one of the first big kid books I read along with Anne of Green Gables. Anne of Green Gables is what actually sparked my love for reading.

        Have a great day 🙂

  2. Anna Katerina says:

Hi!!! I just discovered your blog after reading “Love Never Fails.” It excites me to find your blog and see that you continue writing ❤️ I read this Fic’s chapters, and I love it so much. Hopefully, we will get an update soon because the plot is so exciting and keeps you hooked. Thank you for blessing us with your creativity and fantastic writing.

    • Ms Puddle says:

Thank you Anna for reading two of my stories 🤗. Your positive feedback is greatly appreciated!

      • Anna Katerina says:

Ofc!!! I sometimes feel late to the party since I just turned 19 and barely discovered your blog. Both my parents liked Candy growing up, and they introduced it to me when I was a young child. I had seen them rewatched multiple times since I loved them so much and always felt unhappy with the ending until I discovered the manga in high school.

I have always been an Albert fan. I never really like Terry (maybe because I am not into toxic bad boys with mommy issues 😂). For me, Terry goes against the definition of what my generation calls “if he wanted to, he would.” Terry didn’t fight for his “love.” Also, major disappointed when he slapped Candy (red flag). My university friends (who now know of Candy and love it because I can’t shut up 😂) and I don’t fully understand how Terry has a huge fan base. We genuinely believe that our generation would have such love and care for Albert (I don’t know, maybe it is a weird gen z thing 😂). Albert has just set our standards so high that now when one of us likes a boy, we ask ourselves if he is a Terry or Albert. We only want an Albert and pray God sends us one haha

Anyways, sorry I went on a whole rant. The anime disappointed me because I wanted Albert to have more screen time. The manga was just so beautiful, and I loved it. Then I was like, I use FanFiction.Net for other books/shows; why not look up Candy Candy? I found your story and loved it. As fellow Christians, my friends and I loved the title and the fact that they waited for marriage (and that you included the struggle to wait for marriage and the self-control it takes).

My friends and I are determined that Candy needs a return in our generation (as it isn’t as commonly known).

Now we have been trying to catch up on your blog, and we love everything you post; it is just so helpful even if we are late to the party and reading things from years ago, haha

        • Ms Puddle says:

Thank you, Anna Katerina, for your enthusiastic feedback on my blog and my fanfics. I’m happy to hear that you and your parents have common interests, namely Candy Candy. 🤗

By now you might have known I also prefer the manga version to the anime. If you know Spanish, French or Italian you can purchase the official translation(s) of the Candy Candy Final Story as well. IMHO, the author was in favour of Albert, just like us, LOL.

I don’t understand why Terry has such a huge fanbase either, but it’s not just the gen Z thing. I’m older than you and have been an Albert fan ever since I read the manga as an adult. When I watched the anime as a child I didn’t understand the ending at all.

Anyway, thanks again and see you around. 😉

          • Anna Katerina says:

I am fluent in Spanish and somewhat in Italian, so I have checked out the book, but it is a bit expensive where I am, and as a broke college student, I have to wait for that. I have read the translations posted online. Also, one of my friends who also are interested in Candy is Japanese, so I practically made her my unofficial translator 😂

I am sorry; I think I didn’t express myself correctly; what I meant to say is that my friends and I think gen z would prefer Albert to Terry and not be as divided based on their preferences of characters in other shows. I know older people also love Albert (my mom and her friends included; actually, I recently discovered one of my university professors is also a fan 😂).

Also, I found it funny how people sometimes get bothered by the age gap because no one mentions Ryan Reynolds’s and Blake Lively age gap, and they are around 11 years apart. They are viewed as an ideal couple, so my friends and I use that as our argument 😂

I also agree, believing the author also had a preference for Albert. I am majoring in Literature, so I read a lot and do literary analyses. So now I naturally do one on every book I read; I have yet to discover if it is a blessing or a curse😂. Anyways, many authors want a full-circle moment in their books; it starts with the Prince, so it is logical to end with the Prince. I also believe she uses the literary device of allusion by having Terry star in Hamlet after the breakup. My favorite Shakespearean play is Hamlet, so I have seen some connections of why she chose that specific one (and Romeo and Juliet before).

Also, thank you! Since we found your blog, we have felt excited to read everything you have written!!!

            • Ms Puddle says:

Hi Anna Katerina, it’s nice to have a friend who can help you understand the novel better! When I read that one of your professors is also a fan, I assume you meant a fan of Albert? I wonder how you found out, lol. 😜

About the age gap, you brought up a perfect example of a couple with 11 years apart. Yes, nobody can deny their love to each other, but I guess you probably know by now that some fans simply refuse to listen to any reasoning when it isn’t what they want to hear.

So happy to know that you major in literature, and I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts on why the author chose Hamlet for Terry and Romeo prior to that.

Of course, I couldn’t agree more with you about the full circle argument. I used to think it’s quite obvious, but apparently, some fans would rather turn a blind eye to that… 🤷‍♀️

Many thanks for reading my blog posts or fanfics. Your feedback is greatly appreciated 🤗

  3. DanielleV says:

Hi there! How’s it going, Ms Puddle? Thanks for offering this fascinating chapter for us to read online. It seems that you have carefully thought of the plot because it’s so well-structured.

    Talk to you again soon!

    • Ms Puddle says:

Hello @DanielleV, sorry I almost missed your message. Thank you so much for your encouraging feedback to my fanfic, and I’m so happy to hear that you think my plot is well structured 🤩🤗.

      • DanielleV says:

No worries, Ms Puddle. I sometimes don’t get updates or notifications either. It’s probably just a glitch.

  4. Christine says:

Magnificent drawing! Candy is such an angelic beauty. You have done a great job in depicting our two dearly beloved blondes-Candy and Albert throughout the years. Each and every drawing is amazing. Thank you very much for sharing your drawings and stories.💕💌✨

  5. Avon says:

    Dear Ms Puddle,
I hope you are doing well. Warmer weather has finally arrived and I’m sure that many are anticipating a summer holiday. I hope you find some free time and get much deserved rest.
Your fanfiction is getting more and more intriguing. I also like the title you have chosen.
    Best Wishes!

    • Ms Puddle says:

Thank you @Avon for your encouraging feedback! What a pleasant surprise 🤗

Warm weather hasn’t arrived to where I live yet, unfortunately. Are you planning for a trip in summer?

Best wishes to you too! ☺️

      • Avon says:

If all goes well, my family and I are planning for a brief summer break. We could all use a bit of rest after work. I would also like to catch up with reading some books at the beach or the veranda overlooking the sea (with an ice-cold cup of coffee) which I enjoy doing so much.

        • Ms Puddle says:

Sounds like a plan, @Avon! Do you have a destination in mind? I booked off a week of vacation in late August as well, but I don’t have concrete plans at the moment.

  6. Irana93 says:

Hi there! How’s it going, Ms Puddle? Have you decided to get the booster shot? I’ve got the third one but to be honest I’m not looking forward to the fourth. We’ll see what the scientists have to say and what the CDC recommends in early autumn.

Resuming to Candy White, your fanart of her is absolutely stunning. I’m glad to read that you’re enjoying the process of writing this new fanfic. It’s always a good idea to escape the stress of work a bit and delve in beloved hobbies. My hobby is music (guitar and piano) but I wish I had more time to devote to those dearly beloved musical instruments. I used to play a lot when a child and a teen but then university exams and postgraduate studies along with a full-time job demanded more of my time.

Hope to hear from you soon and thank you so much for sharing your contributions with us.🙏

    • Ms Puddle says:

Hello @Irana93! Thank you so much for catching up. Your feedback is highly encouraging. I play piano for fun too, and sometimes I help out at church choir. That keeps my fingers moving. Being able to play a guitar is great because you can take it with you wherever you go. 🎶🎵

I did get my booster shot but like you, I don’t want to keep getting one after another. Have you seen the Pfizer loyalty card floating around the social media? 🤣

      • Irana93 says:

Have you been playing for years or is it a recent pastime? As for the guitar, you’re right, it’s far more practical but I still enjoy playing both instruments, nonetheless.

I haven’t heard about the Pfizer loyalty card on social media. Is this serious or just trolling?

        • Ms Puddle says:

Hi @Irana93 yes I’ve been playing piano for years but honestly I was better before lol. I wish I could play guitar though. Do you play the acoustic ones?

About the Pfizer loyalty card, it was just a joke floating around, although it might not be too far from the truth…

          • Irana93 says:

I mainly play the classical guitar but I’m been strumming the acoustic every now and then..

As for the Pfizer loyalty card, with all the insanity and chaos going around, nobody really knows who’s trolling and who’s being serious.

            • Ms Puddle says:

That’s so cool, @Irana93! I heard that picking up classical guitar is not easy at all. Did you experience a steep learning curve?

              • Irana93 says:

It wasn’t too difficult for me maybe because I started learning at a very young age. They say that the younger you are in learning a language or a musical instrument, the easier it is to acquire the knowledge and make it sort of second nature to you. What about you?

                • Ms Puddle says:

Hello Irana93, like you, it wasn’t too difficult for me to learn piano. My family could not afford an acoustic piano but a rich relative bestowed a used one on us when I was in elementary grade 4. Not young but not old either 😅

                • Irana93 says:

How fortunate of you! That is surely a lovely gift from your relative.

  7. Halcyon Days says:

Greetings again! So pleased to have read the tenth chapter of your latest fanfic. Adding your beautiful illustrations is a great idea.

Many thanks and I am looking forward to reading what happens next in your fascinating fanfic!

    • Ms Puddle says:

Thank you @Halcyon Days for catching up! 🤗 Your encouraging feedback is much, much appreciated 🥰

      • Halcyon Days says:

You should consider publishing your work as you’ve got talent in writing. Apparently, editing will be required but that’s the case with all writing processes. Even the best of writers have to edit and re-edit their work. It’s part of the overall process of creative writing.

        • Avon says:

          Exactly!

          • Ms Puddle says:

Thanks so much @Halcyon Days and @Avon. I don’t think I’m qualified, lol. Seriously, I really don’t have much time to write, but as a hobby it’s great. I’ve enjoyed entertaining my imagination tremendously. Besides, I have continued support from readers like you 🤗. Thank you!

            • Halcyon Days says:

It’s a pleasure to know that you’re enjoying your hobby because the CC community benefits so much from your contributions. What makes your work and blog stand out is that you have a healthy relationship with the CC community and most importantly, with Nagita’s CCFS novel. In stark contrast to quite a few deranged fans (which come from both sides of the fandom, unfortunately), your approach is always well-measured, balanced and impartial. You treat the story of Candy Candy as all normal and logical human-beings with self-respect do; you never get carried away and start lashing out against others nor do you allow this otherwise fictional story interfere with or superimpose your life. Certain fans need to seek psychological or even psychiatric help because they desperately try to defend Terry or Albert as if they’re their real husbands or lovers. In reality, they’re just fictional characters which are utterly incapable of bettering their miserable and dreary lives. Instead of getting into silly arguments over Candy Candy, those foolish old fans should get a life and find some meaning and thus improve (at least to some extent) their wretched existence before it’s too late. It’s not as if time is on their side, as most of those hysterical fans are in their 50s and 60s.

              • Ms Puddle says:

Thank you so much for your positive feedback and kind compliments, Halcyon Days. I’ll continue to try my best to keep up! 💪🤗

  8. Lakewood says:

What a magnificent drawing of Candy! You never cease to impress, Ms Puddle. Love the eye-colour and expression. Candy looks so dreamy. It’s not much of a wonder that she had already enchanted Albert. Are you also planning to draw Kimberly? Yumiko Igarashi had provided an illustration of her but I’m not sure whether that was the way she looked like or how Candy imagined she would look like based on Albert’s description in his letter.

    • Ms Puddle says:

Thanks @Lakewood for your encouraging words! 🤗 Yes, I might draw Kimberly later. No guarantee yet at this point, and also I suppose I don’t have to stick with Igarashi’s design. After all, in my fanfic Kimberly is a few years older. Thanks for your interest though ☺️

      • Lakewood says:

Of-course you don’t have to stick to Igarashi’s design. The whole point of fanfiction and fanart is to form your own representations based on how you creatively imagine these beloved characters.

Looking forward to more of your awesome work!

        • Ms Puddle says:

Thank you @Lakewood for your continued support and encouragement ☺️🤗

          • Lakewood says:

If convenient and useful for you, perhaps you should consider forming a portfolio with all your artwork. Just make sure to copyright-protect your original work, especially the ones which are not based on fanart. It would be wise to do the same with your written contributions.

            • Ms Puddle says:

Thanks so much @Lakewood for your suggestions! For now my blog is basically my portfolio, where I keep all my fan-works in one place. ☺️

              • Lakewood says:

Just make sure to legally secure your work because you’ve put so much effort into it. Please, take this as friendly advice due to concern because I see your work (mainly your fanart) all over social media. This is great but it could also have repercussions. Unfortunately, it’s not the first time someone has tried to profit out of your hard work. Some were even so low and cheap that they even used your fanart for their profile pic without having consulted with you first.
                Take care and all best!

                • Ms Puddle says:

Thank you @Lakewood for your advice and concerns. I used to care very much about people stealing my fanarts and/or erasing my signatures, but later I found that it was utterly impossible to chase after these people. 🙁

                • Lakewood says:

There are ways to seek legal action but it could get complex and become acutely time-consuming. Scammers are aware of this and that’s why they continue with their sordid actions assuming that nobody will take the time and effort to pursue them legally. The EU is actually looking into ways to expedite the process and assist people online to protect their work as well as legally pursue those who have allegedly broken the law or violated certain rules and regulations.

                • Ms Puddle says:

I see. Thanks Lakewood for your concerns, and what I can do now is to keep using watermark 🙏

                • Lakewood says:

Make sure to first publish any of your work such as your stories and art on your blog or FB page where there’s an exact date available. This will provide further confirmation of the ownership of your work.

                • Ms Puddle says:

I’ve never thought that’s important, Lakewood. I’ve always published on my blog first, but sometimes I don’t post on Facebook right away. Thank you very much for your advice!

                • Lakewood says:

                  Glad to be of help!

  9. Anita says:

    Hello Ms Puddle,

Finally got round to reading your newest additions to your latest fanfiction. It was definitely worth it, even the cliff-hangers. LOL

    Take Care!

    • Ms Puddle says:

Hi @Anita, thank you for catching up! Glad you don’t mind the cliffhangers lol 😅 You take care too!

I heard that the number of cases in the UK might have trended down but is still high. Actually, it’s about the same here. When people are relaxed and don’t wear masks anymore, the hospitalization rate goes up again. 🙁

      • Anita says:

The situation hasn’t abated in the UK but for political reasons the corrupt government in power is indifferent to the health and safety of its citizens.

        • Myra says:

Similar is the situation in Greece and I wouldn’t be surprised elsewhere too. Political corruption and greed tend to have no borders and are scarcely restricted to only a few countries.

          • Ms Puddle says:

Same here in Canada, @Anita and @Myra. I don’t agree with the current protocol, and while the politicians are hoping to boost the economy, the omicron infections are actually threatening economic recovery.

            • Myra says:

It’s also the psychological factor as many people have been freaking out from all the lockdowns. The issue here is that governments keep on making the same mistake by taking it to the extreme; they will either impose severely strict lockdowns or they will set everyone free and on the loose. What ever happened to middle-ground policies and sensibility?

              • Ms Puddle says:

Myra, granted, our provincial government in British Columbia did implement the policies by phases and restrictions had been lifted gradually. That being said, I do have friends who recently got infected when more and more people stop wearing masks indoors, despite the fact that my friends were still cautious and kept their masks on. Sigh….

                • Myra says:

All the safety measures in the world cannot help as much unless people are willing to cooperate and be considerate to one another. Unfortunately, this is not the case and that’s the reason why this pandemic will most certainly not end anytime soon. It’s not enough if only some people maintain social distancing in tandem with focusing on hygiene and sanitation. All people or at least the greatest majority must maintain health and safety at all costs.

                • Ms Puddle says:

It’s funny though it seems people don’t care so much anymore these days, Myra, especially those who are fully vaccinated, because the symptoms are mild, just like flu. However, those who are unvaccinated should still be worried, I think.

                • Myra says:

The problem is that there’s a widely held belief-mainly among the unvaccinated-that the Omicron variant is harmless. While it’s not as dangerous as the Delta variant, Omicron continues to pose life-threatening health hazards in the vaccinated and unvaccinated alike. Nevertheless, the vaccinated have a better chance of avoiding hospitalization in contrast to the unvaccinated. Yet, all this information is fluid and the situation surrounding COVID-19 is changing relentlessly.

                • Anita says:

                  Facts.

  10. Fay says:

Ms. Puddle, you have given us another exciting chapter. Things are progressing between Candy and Albert, and it was very amusing to see a small boy helping them with his innocent comments to find their way to each other. “Out of the mouths of babes…” I hope those two adults will soon discover what little Sean has already figured out.

Also I suspect that Patty and Wallace may be romantically involved. I’m glad because Patty is one of my favorite characters of the original story, and it was sad to see she was alone by the end of it. She deserves to be happy with a man who will love and support her, and I hope this man will be Wallace. It’s so nice that you seem to be giving her a second chance for happiness in your story.

Looking forward to your next chapter. And last but not least, your latest fanart is an exquisite portrayal of Candy as a young adult. Along with that one used in Chapter 7 and your current cover picture on your Facebook page, they are my top 3 favorites of your fanarts of Candy. However, in my opinion this new one is the best of them all. Congratulations, my friend. You have great talent, both as a writer and an illustrator.

Keep on the good work, and take care.

    • Ms Puddle says:

Hello @Fay, thank you for reading my update❣️ You should know me by now. No spoilers 😉

About my fanarts, you’re so sweet and kind 😘🤗 I’ll try my best and keep up. Take care, my friend!

I would like to hear from you!
