[Title of Short Story: Another Happy Clinic at Pony’s Home?]

    [Beginning of Short Story]

Several weeks had gone by and Candy still had not received that long awaited letter from Dr Martin. She had been anticipating a response from him following her letter informing him of Albert’s job offer. One of the most important additions to the orphanage was the construction of a clinic which would not only serve the medical needs of the children and directors of the orphanage but also the people residing at the neighbouring villages. Candy had been looking forward to this clinic as she would be able to practice her skills as a fully certified nurse. But a doctor was much needed and Albert had come up with the idea of hiring Dr Martin. His proposal was met with great delight by Candy and she almost immediately wrote to Dr Martin to act on Albert’s behalf and make this job offer herself. Albert was terribly busy at work as he had embarked on another successful business project and he was relieved that Candy would function as his spokesperson. Even though they were miles apart, never had Candy and Albert been so close. They had been collaborating on the reconstruction of the orphanage as well as sharing ideas about renovating key aspects of Pony’s Home such as the school and clinic. Candy wanted to take initiative in the decision-making and Albert was utterly supportive. Their only concern was whether Dr Martin would eventually accept the offer and if he did, the crucial question arose how long would he manage to keep away from the bottle. Granted Dr Martin was a keen doctor, yet, he was also an avid drinker and this made Albert feel uneasy and apprehensive. Candy promised him that she would keep an eye on Dr Martin and make sure he kept sober. Besides, he had made a vow to himself and to his dear friends that he would steer clear from alcohol and turn over a new leaf in his life. Being a medical doctor in charge of children is a tremendous responsibility and Albert did not want to take any chances with Dr Martin. In spite of being grateful to his kindness and providing medical treatment to him without payment, Albert was pragmatic enough to know that it would not be easy for Dr Martin to abandon alcohol altogether. Candy was far more hopeful and optimistic which inspired Albert to share her positive feelings about hiring Dr Martin and entrusting him with such a responsibility.

It had been almost a month and Candy had yet to receive a reply from Dr Martin. She contacted Albert about this and they both expressed their concern regarding the doctor’s silence. Nevertheless, they both agreed to be patient and wait a bit longer with the hope that Dr Martin would accept the offer. Candy had reiterated to Albert that she would maintain a watchful eye over Dr Martin’s ill habits when it came to the bottle and Albert expressed his full trust in her decision-making and intentions. Candy was elated that Albert was beginning to be more open and expressive with her. His letters to Candy were longer and when they would meet in person, Albert felt more comfortable in discussing his personal life with her. Candy appreciated that Albert was more at ease with her even when she prodded him with a barrage of questions regarding his experiences in Africa and elsewhere during his travel around the world. She was careful not to be indiscreet although she was tempted to probe further into his personal life and inquire whether he had an intimate relationship with another woman. Unbeknown to her, Candy started to feel a knot in her stomach at the thought of Albert being in love with another woman. Was she jealous? Perhaps so and she began to accept that her feelings for Albert had transcended mere friendship. Being apart functioned as a double-edged sword in their relationship because on the one hand, it hindered the opportunity for them to spend more time together; on the other hand, this distance enabled them to have their own space for a while and sort out their feelings regarding their complex relationship. Focusing on other matters such as the clinic and the restructuring of Pony’s Home, these external affairs helped them to ease the tension as well as encourage them to become even closer by collaborating and sharing ideas. Albert seemed to be more keen on maintaining the space between them for a while and this aggravated Candy because it exacerbated her insecurity surrounding Albert’s feelings for her. Even though he was warm and cordial with Candy, Albert always kept a safe distance regardless of how hard Candy tried to break the ice. Progress between them was evident and the ice was thawing considerably but it was moving at a much slower pace than what Candy had bargained for. She was grateful, however, that Albert was finally opening up to her when it came to his thoughts and feelings but there was still a lot of room for improvement. Candy was striving to retain her patience as she did not want to drive Albert away with her persistence.

As the winter holidays were approaching, Candy was so preoccupied with the Christmas preparations at the orphanage that she had not noticed the postman knocking at the front door. He requested to see Candy in person so as to deliver a parcel to her specifically. Candy’s heart skipped a beat at the thought the parcel was from Albert but she was equivalently delighted to read Dr Martin’s letter which was enclosed in the parcel. The parcel contained a newly published medical journal regarding neurology which he was certain that both Candy and Albert would enjoy reading as he was aware of how knowledgeable Albert was in medicine and healing. Dr Martin ended his letter apologising to Candy for the delay in his response and that he would be delighted to accept the offer and work at the new Happy Clinic at Pony’s Home. He had also reassured Candy that he had been sober for a very long time and he is proud of himself for maintaining his resolve. He thanked both Candy and Albert for their kind offer wishing them all the best.

Candy could not help but become overtly emotional regarding Dr Martin’s acceptance. She was wondering whether the doctor had noticed the brewing intimacy between her and Albert because the final sentences of his letter seemed to suggest that he viewed Candy and Albert as a pair. The two blondes had become increasingly close during their cohabitation at the House of Magnolia but time has yet to reveal whether this growing intimacy between them with bear fruit. With Dr Martin’s positive response, Candy was fraught with joy that her collaboration with Albert regarding the renovation of Pony’s Home will also contribute greatly to the strengthening of their ineffable and reciprocal affection. Time would only be able to tell and Candy was anticipating her future with Albert with positivity and exuberance.

    Hello Ms Puddle,

    ‘Mr Brown’s Unexpected Visit’

Mr Brown had been planning his journey back home to Illinois for quite some time but he did not want to make his return public. Besides, his relationship with Madame Elroy and the other elders of the Ardaly clan was anything but favourable. The only people he wanted to see again were his brother-in-law and nephew. He also had some sporadic correspondence with Candy and he anticipated to see her again as well.

Upon arrival at the Chicago estate, Mr Brown was greeted by a young and fresh-faced secretary who informed him that Mr William A Ardlay had taken the day off for personal reasons but did not provide further explanations. Mr Brown was surprised to not find George anywhere and he asked the young lady for his whereabouts in which she replied that George was based at the city-centre where his office was within close proximity to the high street banks. Mr Brown was pleased to learn about Albert’s adeptness as a business entrepreneur. Albert’s start-up businesses were flourishing to such an extent that he had the ease to hire more employees and offer opportunities to aspiring young women and men inclined towards business innovation. Mr Brown noticed that the entire estate had a different air and ambience to it which was a far cry from the cob-web and anachronistic atmosphere that the previous management had established. Albert’s reputation as a shrewd businessman had been spreading like wildfire within the professional circles of powerful magnates and entrepreneurs. Even though he was one of the youngest in his field, he was also one of the most brilliant and innovative minds. Nonetheless, Mr Brown could not help but compare Albert with his father who was also one of most hard-working and productive business entrepreneurs in Chicago.

To his disappointment, Mr Brown would probably not be able to see his brother-in-law since he was on leave but then it crossed his mind that Albert could be spending his much needed leisure time at his cottage near the lake situated in the same vast estate albeit further away from the main building which also functioned as William A Ardlay’s business headquarters. Mr Brown had known his brother-in-law ever since he was a toddler. Albert had a vested interest in self-reliance and everything pertaining to that quality whether it be woodwork, construction and repairing. These traits had solidified in his adolescence when Albert demonstrated a particular inclination in the biomedical field. No doubt that Albert was a multi-talented young lad who never ceased to amaze even the stone-faced elders of the Ardlay clan-all of whom had invested in Albert’s intelligent young mind and industriousness. None of them were disappointed in the slightest as Albert would exceed their expectations. However, Albert’s fierce fidelity to hard work and studiousness had taken a toll on the quality of his personal life as he had no friends his age. He was never known to have a girl-friend either even though Mr Brown had a slight suspicion that he was involved with a fellow university student at Oxford. There were some mild rumours circulating that Albert had been dating a beautiful young lady who was studying medicine at Oxford. Albert was supposed to be studying law but he had decided to embark on a joint degree and pursue his studies in medicine too, hence, excelling in both fields. Perhaps that young lady had played an instrumental role in influencing Albert to make such a decision. On the other hand, Albert had always been interested in the biomedical field and all those rumours could have been mere hearsay.

Determined to see his beloved brother-in-law again and discover for himself whether he is devoting any time to his personal life, Mr Brown advanced towards the cottage and lake anticipating to see Albert there. Given the vast property of the Chicago estate, Mr Brown had to walk for about half an hour but it was a brisk walk as the weather was gorgeous. The sun shone brightly and the Northern wind was fresh but not chilling to the bone as usually the case with the infamous windy weather in Illinois. Even if he failed to find Albert, he would have succeeded in getting in a bit of exercise by taking a walk in the lush green environment of the Chicago estate.

As Mr Brown finally approached the lake and also saw the picturesque cottage nestled on a small hill, he noticed two figures in the distance. He immediately recognised Albert’s tall and lean silhouette next to a petite young woman with long curly hair. She was wearing a floral dress which delineated her slim frame. Both Albert and this young lady looked as if they were part of a painting as both of them had golden-blonde hair glistening in the sun. The whole scene was akin to a dream and Mr Brown was pleased to see Albert in such a state of bliss. He did not want to infringe upon the their privacy so he decided to leave the scene as quietly and discreetly as possible. Yet, he was curious enough to verify who this young woman was and whether he had seen her before. At some point the young woman extended her arm and held Albert’s hand. He turned towards her and placed his other arm around her waist and they both kissed passionately. It was rather reckless of them to do this because anyone within the vicinity could have easily seen them. Their passion had exceeded any form of inhibition and they simply continued to share their prolonged kiss caressed by the warm rays of the afternoon sun. The young lady wrapped both her arms around Albert’s neck while he encircled his long fingers around this lady’s tiny waist. Mr Brown fondly remembered those beautiful moments during his clandestine encounters with Rosemary. This young woman kissing Albert actually looked like Rosemary albeit considerably smaller in stature and frame.

To his astonishment, Mr Brown suddenly realised who this young woman was as both Albert and this lady turned around and continued walking hand in hand but did not notice Mr Brown in the distance. He was glad that they were so engrossed in each other that his presence remained unnoticed. In order to maintain this discretion, Mr Brown silently walked back to the office buildings of the Chicago estate but this time with a smile on his face. He had noticed that the relationship between Candy and Albert was unique as the two of them shared such a special and intimate bond but he had not expected that they had furthered their love to such a passionate level because they always seemed to be so disciplined in the presence of others, especially those connected to the Ardlay clan.

Walking back to the Chicago estate, Mr Brown couldn’t help but release a chuckle at the thought of the formidable Madame Elroy discovering the love between Candy and Albert. Had she witnessed what he had, she would have had a cardiac arrest. Mr Brown was more than certain that the romance between Candy and Albert would bring a breath of fresh air within the stale and sterile environment of the Ardlay clan-an establishment Albert was determined to tear asunder via his radical albeit professional expertise as well as his otherwise controversial personal preferences in choosing the love of his life.

Here’s my entry, Ms Puddle. I hope you enjoy reading it. I decided to write it in an epistolary form. It’s based on Candy’s unsent letter to Albert.

    “Love and Gratitude”

    “Dear Albert,

I just wanted you to know that I have sent a letter to Dr Martin inviting him to live and work at Miss Pony’s. Hopefully, he’ll accept this offer and come to work here at the medical clinic you have set up.

Words cannot describe how kind and generous you have been to all of us, Albert. I know you can’t stand being called “Prince” but let’s face it-you are! What makes you a prince is not money or property but your remarkable character. You know how to respect others without paying attention to their financial background or social status. Who gave you this amazing upbringing? Was it your sister, Rosemary? If only she were alive.. She would have been so proud of you for what a wonderful man you’ve become. There’s a saying that “money can’t buy class” and that definitely applies to the Leagan family. In your case, however, whether you’re wearing that worn safari jacket or an expensive suit you always inspire class because of your personality and outlook on life. From our first encounter, I always suspected that there was more to you than meets the eye because your beautiful voice and elegant manners contradicted your attire. It goes to show that what matters in life is the quality of our character and not the quantity of cash in our pockets.

I’m sure that George also played an important part in raising you to become so considerate and caring. You shouldn’t have given him such a hard time though by disappearing without a trace to Africa. On the other hand, I can understand why you took flight. You had suffered such great loss following the death of your dearly beloved sister and you also had to endure all that pressure coming from the stifling life the Ardlay elders had submitted you. How I want you to talk to me more about your life. What was your childhood like? Did you have friends to trust? Did you become close with anyone in particular? Did you fall in love? You had mentioned a beautiful nurse you had been working with in Africa. Was she more than just a friend?

OK, I got a bit carried away with those final questions but some day I will press you for an answer. Just not yet..

To be honest, I do find it acutely frustrating that you continue to remain silent with regards to your life. Never have you spoken freely about your feelings to me. I’m always the one running to you and seeking your love and counsel. Not once have you reciprocated that. I know I’m asking you for too much and I don’t even have the right to demand this from you but I cannot help but state how much I want to know more about you. I have so many questions but the answers I’ve received from you are mere mere grains of sand on a vast beach. When will you open up to me? Sometimes I feel that you want to talk to me more freely based on the look on your face but something keeps stopping you from doing so. What is it? In a way, it could be my fault because during our time together at the Magnolia. I would always talk about Anthony and Terry. I didn’t understand the level of damage back then but now I know how detrimental this may be in our future together. You’re neither a jealous nor possessive man but I could understand your misgivings after hearing me garrulously talk about my past relationships. However, do not forget that I had also been talking a lot about you-the Prince of the Hill! The problem with me is that I don’t know when to stop and I have inadvertently cause others to get angry because of this. But I have to point out that not once did you ever lose your temper or try to control me as Terry did whenever I spoke about Anthony. I have nothing else to say but give you credit for the fact that you have always treated me with respect and not once did you ever demean or try to control me. In retrospect, I reminisce our time together at the Magnolia and never had you tried to make any advances towards me. I always felt safe and comfortable with you because of my undivided trust for you.

It’s a pity though that you haven’t understood that my feelings for you are changing.. It’s been happening for quite a while and now that we’re apart my longing for you has become even more intense. Do you feel the same? Do you miss the time we spent together at the Magnolia? I know you’re so busy with work and George doesn’t leave you a moment to rest (good for him, you deserve it!) but do you ever think about us?

    Us..

I’m still struggling to figure out what we were trying to prove not only to others but mainly to each other and ourselves. The others simply believed that we were siblings but I never saw you as my brother. I hope you do not see me as your sister. I have nothing against Rosemary but I do not want that type of relationship with you. We need to see each other again and talk-just like we used to do during those wonderful years we spent together at the Magnolia. Perhaps I’m guilty for not having appreciated what we had back then. Now that I’m away from you, I feel the need to be closer to you again. I hope you feel the same. If you do, you’ll find the way to see me again even if you have an avalanche of workload. I know you. You will do anything and you’ve got the ingenuity to cook up a way to meet up again if that’s what you really want. The problem is that I don’t know if you want to. I may have driven you away with all my blabbering about my previous affairs. Had it been the other way around, I ought to confess that I would be savagely jealous if you had talked about that pretty American nurse you were working with in Africa. Embarrassingly so, I have a bit of jealously even though you had never mentioned her again. Apparently, you master the art of silence far better than I do.

Needless to say that I’m not going to send this letter to you even though deep down inside I think you already know how I feel. You know how to “read” people and you’ve probably figured me out. Nevertheless, you have never used any of my flaws against me. On the contrary, you always make me feel so good about myself and your support for me is endless and unconditional. Not once have you ever asked anything in return and not once have you ever attempted to manipulate my moments of weakness. Some day when we finally meet again-just the two of us-I will tell you how my love and gratitude for you is just as undivided and unconditional as (hopefully) yours is for me. You had promised that we should share everything and I will make sure you honour that vow because for me, that promise has a much higher value than all the material wealth and power in this world.

    With Love and Gratitude,
    Candy”

Having finally sealed the letter intended to be sent to Dr Martin, Candy let out a subtle sigh of relief as she reclined on the sofa.. For days Candy had been wondering whether she should take the initiative and write to Dr Martin on behalf of Albert. She was neither his caseworker nor his secretary to assume such a significant role and she was pleasantly surprised when Albert was absolutely fine with her decision to write to Dr Martin and inform him of his intentions. Candy knew all too well that Albert had sufficient time to write to the doctor himself or arrange to have this letter redacted by George or one of his secretaries lest he should be busy at work. The fact that Albert singled Candy out spoke volumes of his trust in her and she was more than honoured to act on his behalf. However, Albert’s respect for Candy was not met in a positive way by all the members of the Ardlay clan. From the most prominent figures to the members of staff, Candy was aware that there were still quite a few of them who were convinced that she was a liar and a thief. Eliza and Neil, unfortunately, had that uncanny ability to be particularly convincing not only to their relatives but also to the personnel that Candy was an opportunistic wench who simply managed to toy with Albert via the use of her mincing mannerisms and blandishments in order to get her way. Their insults weren’t limited to back-stabbing gossip but they were also slammed in front of her whilst Albert was away on his multiple business trips to the UK, Canada and South America. The Lagans were such cunning-foolish cowards that they always waited for Albert’s absence in order to mar Candy’s reputation even more. Yet, Candy was reluctant to inform Albert of these malicious acts against her as she did not want to upset him during his challenging business liaisons outwith the US. Albert already had too much on his plate and his working hours were overwhelmingly hectic. On the other hand, Candy’s dignity could no longer tolerate Eliza and Neil’s aggressive epithets hurled against her so she decided to take matters into her own hands and confront her irrespective of the consequences. Besides, she already had her permanent homestead at the complex overlooking the chapel at Pony’s Home and soon she would further her professional experience as a certified nurse under the supervision of Dr Martin, provided that he accepted her and Albert’s offer of employment at the new clinic at Pony’s Home.

That day of self-vindication came sooner than expected for Candy during her stay in Chicago several weeks ago. She had to head to the city for administrative purposes regarding her surname as it was given when she was sent to Pony’s Home. In theory, she was an Ardlay but in legal practice and reality, she was “Candice White”. Ironically so, she was pleased for never having been an Ardlay because that further confirmed her integrity that she had never pursued to be a member of that wealthy and often abhorrently pretentious family. Albert and Archie were also intensely adverse to the Ardlay family gatherings and they would do their utmost to avoid attending their lavish parties which were devoid of meaning and substance. Candy was even more pleased whenever she saw her name “Candice White” imprinted on all her legal and academic documents; she had managed to become a fully certified nurse and fend for herself without an iota of assistance from the Ardlays. George had offered many a time to provide financial assistance but Candy would always politely decline his offer. Candy had grown to appreciate George just as much as Albert did. She felt a connection with George because they were both from unprivileged backgrounds but managed to succeed in life via hard work and perseverance. During her stay in Chicago, George had invited Candy to reside at the Ardlay mansion. Albert was in the UK at the time and he would spend a significant amount of time in the city of London for business purposes. Nonetheless, he had contacted George to make sure that Candy would receive all the care and accommodation he would have provided himself had he been in Chicago. Even though George was more than kind and considerate to Candy, Eliza and Neil would resume their nefarious practices against her until the entire situation came to standstill and Candy erupted. During a wine reception at the Ardlay mansion, Eliza insulted Candy in front of her clique by outspokenly mocking Albert of his gullibility regarding Candy’s alleged manipulative character. Eliza implied that Candy used her feigned innocence and seemingly caring attitude in order to extract money from Albert by the false pretences of using it to build a clinic for the orphan children and the members of staff at Pony’s Home. This final accusation was the straw that broke the camel’s back and Candy revealed a streak in her character which even she had never fathomed it actually existed. In a calm albeit stern demeanour, Candy openly confronted Eliza and Neil dismantling their ludicrous claims one after the other. This was easy to achieve because Candy’s frugal lifestyle and devotion to her work at Pony’s Home refuted Eliza’s emetic accusations against her. If Candy wanted to exploit Albert, she wouldn’t have returned to Pony’s Home and she wouldn’t have refused all the financial assistance he was willing to provide for her and the orphanage. As for Albert, he was never offended by Candy’s refusal for financial assistance. On the contrary, that made him even more proud of her and her decision to pursue her career in nursing made him respect her even more than he already did. Albert was supportive of Candy’s need to be independent since he shares that exact same need for himself.

Albert had been informed of that incident between Candy and Eliza at the wine reception but he never mentioned it to Candy. Instead, she discussed it with him when they had spent an entire day together at Pony’s Home during one of Albert’s surprise visits after his long business trips. Albert admired Candy’s growing confidence and, in turn, she also felt stronger and far more emancipated as she was no longer that vulnerable little girl being protected by Anthony, Terry or Albert. Much as Candy appreciated their compassion and protectiveness, she wanted to be in a position where no man would shield her as she could fight for herself. Most of all, Candy appreciated the ways in which Albert never imposed himself on her nor abused her in any way; instead, Albert encouraged Candy to be self-reliant and stand on her own two feet when faced with difficult situations. Such was Albert’s confidence in Candy’s personal strength and acumen that he entrusted her with many of his duties overlooking the expansion of Pony’s Home. Candy was in charge of the financial management as well as the hiring of new teachers at the orphanage. Last but not least, Candy had taken the initiative of contacting Dr Martin herself and Albert was delighted with her innovative ideas. Candy and Albert were getting closer and closer via their shared interests and concern for Pony’s Home. Albert perceived Candy as an equal which was unprecedented for Candy as no man had ever treated her as such. She knew that Albert would be the first one to protect her when in need but he was also the first one to give her the space and time to define her individuality and attain her independence as a responsible and mature adult. By signing and sealing that letter to Dr Martin, Candy felt not only as the ultimate confidante to Albert but his most worthy equal partner in business and in their personal life together.

Reading this short story again after being posted, I’ve noticed a minute typo and you’ll find it in the first paragraph:

“On the other hand, Candy’s dignity could no longer tolerate Eliza and Neil’s aggressive epithets hurled against her so she decided to take matters into her own hands and confront ***them*** irrespective of the consequences. Besides, she already had her permanent homestead at the complex overlooking the chapel at Pony’ Home and soon she would further her professional experience as a certified nurse under the supervision of Dr Martin, provided that he accepted her and Albert’s offer of employment at the new clinic at Pony’s Home.”

The “Incident of the Two Badges” is an intriguing topic and it goes to show how controversial “Candy Candy” was even though neither the content nor the subject matter of this story is anywhere near to being controversial.
It’s ironic how an otherwise “normie” and commonplace kids’ tale about a sensitive little white girl during the early 1900s could stir up such a sh$tstorm between the writer and artist, and later on among the fans-most of whom are middle-aged and elderly by now. I doubt it that anyone will find a more deranged fanbase than the “Candy Candy” one. It’s not surprising that younger generations have next-to-zero interest for Candy and her story. These older people demand younger readers to be mature but they never abide by their own demands because their behaviour is ridiculously appalling to say the least. No wonder the author decided to put a lid on this story and give it such an ambiguous ending. It’s a pity she decided to do that because this story did have potential but it remained stillborn.
As for the short story contest, I think I’ll take part cause it sounds like fun. I enjoyed writing for the previous one so I’ll give it another go.

    Thanks for the invite!

Well said, @Christine. The author and the illustrator are both talented women, and they started this project in their twenties. Sometimes fame and greed can really change a person.

Glad to hear you’re going to write too! Thank you ❤️

      • Christine says:

I would say that the greed came from Igarashi. I find no fault in Nagita apart from the fact that she was too naive to trust Igarashi in the first place. Igarashi is undeniably talented but she’s also undeniably ambitious and unscrupulous.

        • Christine says:

Regarding the short story, I’ll try to keep it as succinct as possible. I wouldn’t want to burden your time with my ramblings.😉
