    Hi there,

My entry includes a letter from Patty to Candy written and sent shortly before Christmas. I wanted to provide a bit of insight into Patty’s life because I think Keiko Nagita really abandoned this awesome character and I honestly have no idea why she decided to do that. It’s a brief letter within the word limit you have suggested but I wanted to provide a bit of hints and clues surrounding Patty’s life at university and how she’s moving on after Stear’s death in battle.

    Letter from a Distant Friend
    (From Patty)

    “Dear Candy,

How have you been? You can’t imagine how long I’ve been meaning to write to you but this past year has been so eventful. I’ll be submitting my thesis soon and hopefully I will be granted my postgraduate degree in education. Going to university has always been my dream and I still can’t believe that I’m finally at the end of the tunnel. This thesis of mine is challenging but my academic supervisor is most certain that I will succeed in attaining my Master’s Degree. I have been encouraged to further my studies by embarking on a doctorate after receiving my Master’s. This route had never crossed my mind but as time is going by, I’m seriously considering that option. It will depend on the progress of my thesis. I will also have to seek employment and a scholarship because the expenses to study for a doctorate are costly. My parents want to assist me financially but I would rather be independent from them and fend for myself. I’ve been working at the university teaching Latin, English and rhetoric so I really don’t need my parent’s money. There is something really empowering about being about to look after yourself and accumulate your own income. I admire your tenacious spirit in furthering your career as a nurse and not expecting anyone to give you handouts. I’m sure that Albert is also very proud of you for not expecting anything from the eminent Ardlay family and thus turning down Neil’s marriage proposal. I’m going to be blunt but I have to say that Neil is a complete moron for trying to coerce you into marrying him. What was he thinking? But then again, neither he nor Eliza have much of a brain to begin with in order to develop cognitive abilities. Luckily, Albert stepped in and put a tombstone on that clownish travesty of theirs.

Speaking of Albert, how is his health? I know the two of you have maintained contact even though you’re no longer living together. You seemed rather unhappy the last time we had met even though you were looking forward to returning to the orphanage. What’s wrong? It seems to me that you miss Albert a lot. Unfortunately, the two of you cannot meet as often as you want due to his innumerable business responsibilities. I fully understand what he’s going through because I am also severely pressed for time and that has had an impact on my social and personal life. You got to understand that we want to see you all again but it’s impossible with all the work and studies. Albert is also studying a lot especially concerning business law and new policies. His position is extremely demanding and he has no other alternative but to devote the greatest majority of his time in his work and professional development. I noticed you were a bit curt with him during our previous visit to Lakewood and, honestly, I have to admit that you were unfair to him. Albert has always supported you in your decisions and the least you could ever do for him is to equivalently respect the fact that he also has a life of his own which is riddled with so many crucial affairs and responsibilities. I know I’m chastising you even though Christmas is approaching but as your dear friend, I have the moral duty to be honest with you and let you know that you’re wrong in giving Albert such a hard time. It’s obvious that you mean the world to him otherwise he wouldn’t have gone to such lengths to clear your name and then provide so much financial support for the refurbishing of the orphanage. He has even invested in building an infirmary within the premises. Take note that he isn’t doing this only for the orphans but also for you as he wants to repay you for all the good you have done for him. When you see him again and hopefully for you, very soon, please tell him to take it easy because he had gone through a major health crisis in his life. Although Albert looks as strong as a horse, amnesia is an insidious medical condition and its medical ramifications are still a mystery for doctors and medical researchers alike.

As for me, I am currently seeing a colleague of mine at university. He’s studying law and finance but we attend some common classes. We also collaborate on the curriculum because he teaches Latin and rhetoric too but for final-year students. I will not write more about him for the time-being because I would prefer to tell you about him in greater detail when we meet again. Besides, he and I are still just friends and time will tell if anything else will come of this relationship.

Sadly, I won’t be able to make it for Christmas and I’m already jealous that you, Archie and Annie will get together and arrange a party for the children at the orphanage. Is Archie really going to dress up as Santa Claus? Isn’t he a bit too skinny for that? I could imagine all the laughter coming from all of you at the sight of Archie in an oversized red suit. He will have to fill it with loads of fabric in order to make himself look plump. I also miss all that delicious food Miss Pony prepares. How I would have loved to be there and help you bake a pie or two! I’ve heard that your cooking skills have improved to the point that you even know how to bake bread and make your own cheese. Now that’s what I call progress!

Please send my regards to your directors and to all our friends. I’m sure that Albert will regret missing your wonderful Christmas party as I already regret missing it but we really have no other choice due to pending matters which are of vital importance to our future. Hopefully, we’ll make amends by arranging a get-together after I submit my thesis. Perhaps Albert’s workload would have become less overwhelming by then.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a much better New Year governed by world peace and common sense!

    With lots of love,
    Patty”

Hello again, Ms Puddle, and thank you for reading my short story. I am looking forward to your input.

    Talk to you again soon!

  4. Lynn says:

    Vincent and Rosemary’s Past
    (Short story by @Lynn)

It wasn’t Mr Brown’s first Christmas alone without his wife and son but the melancholy and sense of loss were more intense than ever before. He could not explain the reason why but he tried to subdue his sorrow through work. It was to no avail, however, as the images of his beautiful wife and adorable son were etched in his mind indelibly.

The only glimmer of light came with Candy’s letter and Christmas card, both of which arrived as a special delivery to him at his office. The Christmas card had been drawn by one of the children of the orphanage as explained by Candy in her letter. Mr Brown was impressed by the talent of the young artist. She was an orphan girl who was barely eight years of age but knew how to draw in such an adept way. She had drawn a scenic landscape where the background consisted of snow-capped mountains and in between the gentle slopes was a river with cypress trees delineating the banks of this river. In the foreground there were several children playing with various animals such as dogs, cats and a horse. Mr Brown smiled whilst looking at that drawing and admired the imagination of the child who had drawn it. Based on this image, it seemed that this young artist enjoyed a lovely childhood even if living in an orphanage. Yet, the place which was run by Miss Pony and Sister Lane was anything but an orphanage. It was more like a true home where the children were indulged with so much love and tenderness. Mr Brown felt nauseated at the thought of how Candy had been mistreated when sent to the Leagans to be Eliza’s playing companion. She was treated more like a slave than a companion. At least Candy had found support and affection from Archie, Stear and of-course his son, Anthony. Mr Brown couldn’t help but compare the kindness of his son to that of Rosemary. The two of them were so alike and to the immense tragedy which had befallen them all, he would never be able to see them again. Mr Brown was concerned about Candy because he was aware that she kept blaming herself for Anthony’s demise. Needless to mention that the Leagans and Aunt Elroy kept on pounding Candy with even further guilt by casting all blame upon her. Candy had become their punching bag but Vincent was grateful that Albert-under the guise of the Ardlay patriarch-took Candy under his wing and shielded her from any further harm by those terrible people. The Ardlay clan was immersed in wealth and power but completely impoverished when it came to rudimentary human decency and they were, above all, morally bankrupt.

Not all members of the Ardlay clan were emetic like the Leagans and Ardlay elders, however. Vincent had fallen in love with Rosemary from the first moment he cast eyes on her. Albeit a cliche’ deriving from a cheesy romance novel, Vincent felt his heart skip a beat from their very first encounter. Vincent and Rosemary had first met via mutual friends at a Christmas Eve party at Lakewood. The Ardlay family had a reputation for being beautiful as most of them were tall and slender with elegant facial features and excellent complexion. The Ardlays were of Nordic and Celtic origin and that would possibly explain their fair skin in tandem with their blue eyes, golden blonde hair and statuesque physique. Yet, Rosemary’s beauty had managed to exceed those standards as she appeared as the most beautiful woman amongst them according to Vincent. In his eyes, Rosemary looked like a Celtic goddess with long blonde hair which was wavy and looked like a river of gold. He was absolutely mesmerised by her beauty and stunned when looking into her wide-set blueish-green eyes. Vincent was desperately trying to conceal how starstruck he was by Rosemary’s beauty as he didn’t want to embarrass himself in front of their mutual friends at that Christmas Eve party. Rosemary was approximately the same height as him which made her an exceptionally tall woman. Vincent could do nothing but simply look into her eyes and admire her beauty. Eventually, he managed to regain his composure and engage in an amiable discussion with her. Rosemary’s unpretentious demeanour had slowly but gradually eliminated Vincent’s initial awkwardness and assisted him in feeling more at ease.

After that party, Vincent and Rosemary had agreed to meet again and the more they got to know each other the greater their mutual affections had become. It wasn’t only Rosemary’s physical beauty that held Vincent’s heart in a tight grip. Her intelligence as well as kindness were so strong that they exceeded the level of her beauty. Vincent’s attraction to Rosemary had given way to feelings of profound intimacy and love. Even though Vincent felt so blessed that Rosemary’s love was just as strong, he was pragmatic enough to know that the prominent members of the Ardlay clan would oppose their relationship. Vincent had proposed to Rosemary after courting her in secret for almost a year and she accepted but his proposal was rejected-as expected-by the Ardlay elders. Vincent was deeply concerned about this predicament and did not want Rosemary to suffer as a result but she demonstrated the courage and tenacity to defy the Ardlay elders and marry Vincent in secret-this time, with the help of George who was a kind and loyal friend to both Rosemary and Vincent.

With regards to George, Vincent knew that he was also in love with Rosemary although he had never made any advances or expressed it overtly. Vincent simply understood via George’s facial expression whenever he looked at and spoke to Rosemary. This made Vincent respect George even more because he sacrificed his own feelings for Rosemary in order to help them flee into the night and get married at a nearby chapel. Further on, it was thanks to George’s astute negotiation and diplomatic skills which enabled Vincent and Rosemary to be accepted by the Ardlay elders albeit reluctantly. Rosemary was pregnant with her first child and that had contributed to the Ardlay elders softening their stance against Vincent and Rosemary’s marriage.

The years of happiness would not last long and Vincent would suffer the loss of his wife shortly after their son, Anthony, was born. Vincent had realised that he had begun behaving a lot like Albert’s father and he too was avoiding his own son not because he held any grudge against him but because the memories which sprung into his mind whenever revisiting Lakewood or the Chicago mansion were too painful for him to bear. Ironically so, it was George who had taken over the care of Anthony as well as Rosemary’s much younger brother, Albert. George had become a mother and father to both boys, both of which looked so remarkably similar to Rosemary. The only difference was that Albert was much taller and blonder but he was also about a decade older than Anthony. Both Anthony and Albert shared those amazing personality traits which defined Rosemary and Vincent was grateful that after all these years, a lovely young woman like Candy would come into their lives and give so much meaning. In turn, both Anthony and Albert had given Candy so much love and support.

Before resuming work, Vincent toyed with the thought of whether the friendship between Candy and Albert concealed something deeper much akin to his romance with Rosemary. In their adulthood, Candy and Albert appeared to have become very close and Vincent would not be surprised if they were already a couple. He was concerned for them because he knew that they would receive the same harsh treatment from the Ardlay elders as he and Rosemary did. Yet, Vincent was confident that they would overcome those obstacles provided that their love is true and intact.

No doubt the new year would bring a series of surprises and that made Vincent smile at the thought of a romance brewing between Candy and Albert.

    Albert’s Christmas Letter to Candy

    Dear Candy,

Thank you for getting in touch with Dr Martin on my behalf. Unfortunately, I have been engrossed in my obligations to such an extent that I cannot even find an iota of free time to contact my family and friends. As you may know, George has been providing intensive training and he refuses to leave me a moment of peace. But I guess I deserve this because I have been giving him such a rough time since my childhood. George has always been by my side and generously offering the guidance one would only notice in a good and loving father. George may be strict but he is judicious and compassionate. He may find it hard to believe after all the grief I have been giving him, but George is my role model and I hope I manage to become just as experienced and professional as he is. While I was away in Africa having left everything behind and pursuing my dreams, George was the one who was left with the onus of responsibility to supervise all those matters I was purported to look after. In retrospect, I realise how selfish my actions were and I want to make it up to George by abiding to his demands and paying heed to his warnings as well as respect his guidance.

This means that I have no other alternative but to continue working during the Christmas holiday season and I will not be able to visit you at Pony’s home. I know this comes as a disappointment to you but I am working as hard as I can for my family but also for the people I care about and that includes you and the children. I want to get the construction of the school and renovation of the chapel ready by spring next year but in order for that to be attained, my employees and I will have to work extra hours to get everything sorted out and ready by that deadline. I know you had been looking forward to us being together during Christmas and by all means, that is what I also want but let us be patient and, above all, grateful to have so many people supporting us in the renovation of the orphanage as well as the construction of the medical clinic. I am so pleased that Dr Martin has accepted to work as the main doctor of the clinic. The two of you make such a wonderful team and I am sure the children will adore him. Dr Martin does look a bit like Santa Claus-don’t you think? His jovial personality and roaring laughter will win the children’s’ hearts in no time.

Within the coming week, you should receive several packages from the post office. Don’t tell the children yet-let it be a surprise. Those packages are full of toys, books and other gifts for the children. I will leave it to you to assign the presents based on the age and the need of each child. I would assume that the older ones will prefer the books, board-games and tool-sets. George and I have been trying to figure out what the children would enjoy having the most but feel free to contact me for more provisions to be sent. I won’t be around as I’ll be abroad for business duties but George will be in my stead here in Chicago.

And because I know how your mind works, you’re probably wondering whether I’ve got a present for you too. Well.. that’s a surprise and don’t expect to get a word out of me. Don’t try to get George to tell you because he won’t-I guarantee that! You will simply have to be patient and wait until Christmas morning. Please remember to give my gifts to Miss Pony and Sister Lane too. I promise to visit you and the children once I have completed my urgent obligations and business liaisons. If all goes according to plan, I should be able to return to Chicago and eventually visit you at Lake Michigan in mid January. I know this is a bit late for you but as the saying goes-better late than never. Besides, we have both learnt not to be afraid of farewells because time flies and soon we will see each other again. There is a strange trajectory which unites our lives and somehow and some way we manage to cross paths again even when we are miles apart. Therefore, do not worry and stop being grumpy (I could actually imagine you mumbling and going on a rant right now). Please understand that I really enjoy my job just like you enjoy yours. We are both fortunate to find fulfilment in our employment and in my case, I am so fortunate to have such a supportive mentor as George. One cannot fathom how indispensable George is not only to the Ardlay family as a whole but to each and every member. My father was astute in investing in George’s future because he managed to succeed in every venture he had ever embarked on whether it be his academic studies or his professional development. I refuse to perceive George as my employee. Instead, I see him as my business partner and most of all, my best friend. George had always been so supportive to my father, sister and then me. I have told you how much George loved my sister and he even covered for her when she decided to elope with Vincent. George put his own passion aside and was intent on making Rosemary happy by helping her marry the man she loved. George is a rare breed of a man and I sincerely doubt there is anyone like him. I will never forget how George also did everything in his power to provide for you when I was away in Africa and he continued to support you even though the Ardlay elders and the Lagans treated you so awfully. Above all, I am grateful that George rebelled against my will and invited you to Lakewood and thus disclosed my identity. I wanted more time but I’m glad that George expedited the process. I would have been mortified if the the elders had managed to force you into a marriage with Neal. This was not only against my will but also unbeknown to me. Yet, George confirmed once again what a loyal friend he is to you and me by risking his own job position in order to save you from the talons of those disgusting people. Take note that just because I share blood-ties with them does not mean that I share anything else. Believe me, I don’t.

I hope this letter has managed to appease your disappointment a bit although I’m sure you’ll be giving me grief the moment we see each other again. But that’s alright as I’m used to your nagging. In fact, I’m looking forward to it because I would love to relive those wholesome moments we had shared at the Magnolia house. I was touched when you wrote to me about how you also missed those beautiful times. Believe it or not, I’m actually a sensitive person myself even though I’m nowhere near as chatty as you are about it. To be honest though, I wish I could let myself go the way you do. You are never hesitant in expressing your emotions and I honestly admire you for that. Thanks to you and George, I managed to overcome the trials and tribulations of my amnesia and trauma. Words are not enough to describe my gratitude to you both.

I’ll end my letter here for now. Enjoy the Christmas holiday and ’til we meet again.

Bye for now (and not for long),
    Albert

    Dear Ms Puddle,

I would be pleased if you read my entry and I would be glad to have your thoughts about it. If you want to make any emendations, I am fine with that.

    ////////////////////////////////////

“Memories of Christmas at the House of Magnolia”

There were only a few days left for Christmas and everyone at Ms Pony’s were eagerly awaiting that blessed day. Candy and Ms Pony had been cooking for days preparing for the feast and Sister Maria had been in charge of all the administrative duties ranging from expenses and contacting the pastor with regards to the church ceremony on Christmas Eve. Of-course the children from the youngest to the eldest were exuberant with the arrival of Christmas and, in particular, their presents. The fragrances emitted from the apple, cinnamon and custard pies being prepared in the main kitchen permeated the entire complex. Candy’s nostrils were quivering with all those pleasant aromas and her appetite was becoming even stronger. Here and there she would steal a bite or spoonful of the custard and chocolate circulating in the kitchen which caused laughter for Ms Pony but frustration to Sister Maria. Candy had gained a bit of weight ever since she moved back to the orphanage and Sister Maria would not cease reminding her of that. On the other hand, Ms Pony would assume the role of the peacemaker and gently advise Sister Maria to allow Candy to enjoy Christmas with them as she had been sorely missed. Ms Pony had also noticed that Candy was immersed in her thoughts which made her pensive at times even though she was elated to be back home. Christmas was Candy’s favourite day of the year but she was not as delighted as she would have expected to be because there was something or, in particular, someone missing. Ms Pony noticed that Candy had returned to them as a different person which would make sense given that she was no longer a child but a fully grown woman. However, there was something about Candy which caused a mild concern to Ms Pony and she was planning on discussing this with Candy after the festive days of Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Candy had been awaiting a letter or at least a postcard from Albert but none had been delivered to her for over a month. She knew that Albert’s time had been preoccupied with many business affairs which required constant travel within and outwith the United States. If he had wanted to contact Candy, he would usually assign this as an errand for George and this decision frustrated Candy even though she was aware that this constituted the reality of Albert’s career as a business entrepreneur. Business was booming but there was a downside to all of this and that was Candy and Albert’s relationship. Candy realised that she was not only naive but downright asinine to assume that the circumstances would not change significantly if she had moved back to Ms Pony’s. However, her decision had a dramatic effect and so did Albert’s determination to resume work and focus on the betterment of his professional business skills. Candy would take time off work to write as many letters as possible to Albert but he did not follow suit. His writing was infrequent and lacked the lengthiness and enthusiasm that Candy’s letters had. This was not intentional but Candy could not help feeling hurt by this. She and Albert were drifting apart and in a way, this was a product of her own doing. When she attempted to protest about this to Albert he calmly but firmly reminded her that she should respect his duties as he respect hers. It only took a single sentence to shut her off. Candy began to suspect that Albert may have been disappointed that Candy left Chicago but he had never made any attempt to convince her to stay. She probably would have stayed if he requested it from her. But he never did. He simply wished her the best of luck and that he would continue to support the orphanage financially. Albert kept to his word; he offered financial support unconditionally but that was it. Candy had an inner fear that their profound bond was irretrievably lost as they had parted their ways.

While Candy was helping Ms Pony in the kitchen and baking the almost countless sweet and savoury pies, her mind kept travelling in the past when she and Albert had shared their first Christmas Day together. They were both so short on money and the food on the table was even less than a Spartan’s grub but their joy in being together surpassed any material poverty. Candy was working extra hours at Dr Martin’s clinic and Albert also worked extra shifts at the restaurant in order to earn more money for Christmas as they both wanted to surprise each other with gifts. Their presents were not anything extravagant but their delight was greater than receiving all the gold and silver in the world. Candy had bought a pocket watch for Albert and he, in turn, had bought a delicate perfume in an ornate bottle for Candy. That perfume bottle had been kept by Candy as a treasure in her room and she would get emotional whenever she opened that bottle. The perfume was so delicate which was much akin to jasmine and water lilies. Candy wondered whether Albert had kept that pocket watch she had given him as a gift. She was worried that he may have found it too simplistic now that he was surrounded by such lavish material wealth in his Ardlay mansion. She felt embarrassed even at the mere thought of it.

Back in those beautiful days at the Magnolia, Candy and Albert would endeavour to spend as much time together as possible during their time off work. Albert was an amazing cook and Candy was more than willing to help him even though her cooking skills were way below par. Yet, Albert did not mind as he enjoyed her company and their jokes as they were preparing their meals. Christmas day was even more special to them because Albert would prepare a sumptuous meal even though the financial resources were scant. Candy would light the fireplace and the two of them would enjoy their Christmas dinner along with a bottle of red wine which Albert had used the money he had worked overtime to purchase. Candy had bought a box of chocolate on her way home from work and that would function as a dessert to their Christmas feast. Candy always felt so complete when she was with Albert and she realised the gaping wound when the two of them followed different paths in life. Candy was wondering whether Albert was also overwhelmed with that same gaping wound Candy had been feeling for a considerable period of time ever since returning back to Ms Pony’s.

On Christmas Eve, Candy received a letter from Albert and she was surprised with her reaction. Even before opening the letter, her hands were trembling with anticipation and her eyes had already welling up with tears. Albert’s letter was brief but it brought joy to Candy as it was an invitation for Candy and the children to visit the Ardlay mansion straight after the holidays when Albert would have returned to the United States. Albert expressed to Candy that he wanted to write this letter himself and not have George send another message on his behalf. He also informed Candy that she should be expecting many parcels to arrive which contained presents for Ms Pony, Sister Maria, the children and last but not least, Candy. He promised to her that at some point they will spend the holidays together even if it would not be on Christmas Day provided that she wanted that as well. If Candy had the chance, she would have instantly replied to Albert that she had the exact same thought and intention on her mind. It would be like a second Christmas Day but this time she would spend it with her beloved Prince of the Hill.

  8. Leda says:

    Hello Ms Puddle,

As my story was way too long (it was based on the correspondence between Candy and Dr Martin), I decided to divide this story by focusing exclusively on Dr Martin’s response to Candy and Albert’s job offer regarding the new clinic. I think it would be futile trying to subtract words here and there as that could cause confusion and extract the meaning of the narrative. Therefore, I have posted Dr Martin’s response letter to Candy, instead.

    A Letter from Dr Martin

    “Dear Candy,
I am most pleased to have received your letter and knowing that you are doing just fine. I am glad that you have settled back at the home you love so much. Based on you numerous stories, Miss Pony and Sister Lane must be benevolent people. The orphan children are at least fortunate enough to have you and those two remarkable ladies taking care of them.

To cut straight to the chase, I will simply tell you that I am already packing my meagre belongings and arranging the train ticket to travel to that lovely place you call home. Yes, I sure do accept your offer and I know that Albert is behind all this even though this letter is from you. I will never forget how sad he was when he came to my clinic to bid me farewell. He was taciturn and in a sombre voice told me in a few words that he had regained his memory and wanted to repay me for my medical assistance. Apparently, I did not want him to offer any money but he did anyway as he was adamant. Albert has that strange tactic of being able to be convincing without uttering too many words. Presumably, it is his demeanour which influence others into listening to what he has to say and agree with him. It is extraordinary how calm but commanding he is, simultaneously.

As already mentioned, I reluctantly accepted his financial offer but before I had the chance to ask him where he is planning to go and what he is planning to do thereafter, he simply took flight by getting into a very expensive car and driving off. I was stunned to see him handling such an extravagant vehicle and then I also noticed that he was wearing an expensive suit which made him look classy. Not that Albert is an inelegant man, but such fine clothes and vehicle do definitely add to one’s classy appearance. Yet, I always had the impression that Albert was more than meets the eye. Even though in the past he was wearing those old clothes (albeit always clean and tidy), Albert’s speech and manners betrayed his otherwise posh identity. I had the suspicion that he came from an affluent family because from his diction one could easily ascertain that Albert was a highly educated and cultured young man. He also knows so much about medicine so I gather that he may have studied medicine at university. If I correctly recall, you had mentioned that Albert had studied at a prestigious university in England. This makes sense and it perfectly explains his high quality class and culture.

Resuming to your job proposal, I will tell you again that I hands down accept your offer. Even though you are a bit quirky (just joking!), I miss having you around as my assistant and the children here in Chicago also miss your laughter and beaming smile. You are so wonderful with children and it is no enigma that the orphan children over there at your lovely home are so happy to have you take care of them. Has Albert visited you lately? You have mentioned that he is awfully busy at work. It is so difficult to imagine him being a stern and shrewd businessman but rumours have it here in Chicago that he is one very tough business executive and he knows how to drive a hard bargain when it comes to striking a deal with his peers. Albert sure is a man of many talents and his ingenuity is indisputable. In spite of his toughness as a business executive, he bears a strong sense of appreciation and gratitude to those who have helped him whether that help was minimal (as in my case) or far greater as in your case. Albert’s kindness knows no limits when it comes to the ways in which he has been reinforcing the orphanage. He has put in a lot of money into constructing so many much needed facilities not only for the orphanage but for the neighbouring towns too. It appears that Albert musters the qualities of being a shrewd businessman but also a venerable benefactor. That is remarkable for someone as young as him. Nevertheless, I want you to tell him that he should be extra careful of his health because working hard is great but it could have an adverse effect on one’s health if overdoing it. But I am sure you have already complained to him about all this. Being a bit whiny is one of your main quirks. Your nagging may convince Albert into taking it easy and not burn himself out with all that overtime work. I am joking again so do not get pouty!

On a serious note, I sincerely cannot wait to commence work at the new clinic. You are right about my shabby old clinic here in the city. A good doctor also needs a good supply of medicine as well as efficient medical equipment. I am sure that you and Albert have made the necessary arrangements to provide for all that. I am pleased to know from you that the two of you continue to be so close and work together for the welfare of the orphan children. I know that you are a bit sad that Albert is constantly away on business trips but you must understand that he also loves his job just as much as you love yours. Albert is an ambitious young lad who is working very hard to establish a name for himself. I am certain that he wants you to be proud of him too. I will go even further to tell you that he is doing all this for you as well as for him and his family. You mean a lot to him and he keeps on proving this via his actions. Never forget that actions speak louder than words.

Before ending this letter and resuming work, I would like to thank you, Albert and those remarkable mothers of yours for giving me a second chance in life. Being a doctor in such a wonderful place is like giving me fresh air to breathe. You are so fortunate to have Miss Pony and Sister Lane to support you. It does not matter that they are not your biological mothers. There are children in our world who are abused and malnourished even by their own biological parents. Miss Pony and Sister Lane are far better than hundreds of biological mothers and they have been doing a wonderful job raising you and the other orphan children. Biological ties mean nothing unless there is genuine love and support. You are most fortunate to have been raised in such a loving environment and I am looking forward to joining this beautiful team.

Thank you again and please send my kindest regards to Albert. I hope to see the two of you in the near future.

    All the Best,
    Martin”

Thank you, Ms Puddle, for accepting my short story submission.

Therefore, I have posted Dr Martin response letter to Candy, instead.

    Hi Ms Puddle,
I’ve got my short story ready although I had to cut it down to size because it was getting a bit too long. Now, it’s within the prescribed word-limit.

    Thank you again!

      “A Special Gift”

Despite the blistering cold outside and inclement weather approaching, Candy felt a warmth inside of her which kindled her heart and mind. As she was stretching her legs beside the fireplace after a long day’s work taking care of the boisterous children of Miss Pony’s lovely home, Candy was enjoying her hot cocoa with several well earned marshmallows inside. Even though she was a fully grown adult, those childhood traits will forever remain embedded in her personality. Certain unhealthy habits would also be retained such as adding even more sugar to the already sweetened cocoa in tandem with those heavily sugared marshmallows.

Candy’s fatigue after working all day could not superimpose her delight when receiving a telegram from Dr`Martin stating that he would be honoured to accept Candy’s proposal in moving to Lake Michigan and working as a medical doctor for the new clinic at Miss Pony’s home. Candy was worried that Dr Martin may have declined the offer because moving to a new place at his age could be a rather daunting experience. However, her apprehension was alleviated when receiving his telegram early that day. Even though the sky was overcast as a snow storm was imminent, Candy’s mood was radiant and warm as the fireplace she was comfortably sitting next to.

Candy could not wait to inform Albert of this delightful news but she wanted to tell him in person and not write to him again. In spite of the warmth being emitted from the fireplace, Candy felt a void due to Albert’s absence. Inadvertently, she was reminiscing over and over again those heartwarming moments she had endured with Albert during their long-term accommodation they shared at the Magnolia estate. They had been living together for over two years but to Candy it seemed much less as time flew by so rapidly. How intensely did Candy long for those days at the Magnolia! She missed Albert terribly and even though it was her decision to move back to Miss Pony’s home, not one day had gone by where she did not think about Albert and yearn for his presence. Deep down inside, Candy was hoping that Albert would try to stop her from moving back to Miss Pony’s but then again, that would not be indicative of Albert’s character. What Candy had always respected and admired about Albert’s character was that he was neither possessive nor condescending. Not once had he invaded Candy’s safe space and never had he imposed himself or his opinion onto her. Candy knew all too well that Albert was an independent individual who sought personal freedom but she amazed at the level in which Albert also respected the free-will and individuality of others. Candy was so pleased that her dear friends had also become fond of Albert which was a far cry from the animosity prevailing between her friends and Terry. As a matter of fact, Terry never made any effort to get to know Candy’s friends and he never respected her circle of acquaintances and loved ones. The feelings were mutual, however, especially when it came to Archie and Stear-the latter doing his utmost to conceal his distrust for Terry but it remained obvious that Stear was not particularly fond of Terry either. In Albert’s case, however, all of Candy’s friends as well as Miss Pony and Sister Lane developed an affinity to and camaraderie with Albert. Candy was wondering whether this was some form of sign.. It tends to be a positive sign when one’s friends get along with someone new in one’s life. But what is this sign? Innately, Candy knew what that ‘sign’ was and what it really meant but she decided not to mull over it for the time-being. Besides, she was still rather insecure and apprehensive regarding Albert’s feelings for their relationship and especially for her. Maybe he simply perceived her as a friend as in the case of Annie, Patty, Archie and Stear. Nothing more, nothing less..

On the other hand, Candy’s intuition ‘spoke’ otherwise and made her consider that Albert probably feels just as apprehensive and hesitant as she does. If he were indifferent or perceived Candy as a mere friend, he would not have gone to such lengths to refurbish and expand Miss Pony’s home for orphan and indigent children. This was not an act of sheer charity from Albert’s part nor was he narcissistic so as to establish a name for himself by financially reinforcing Miss Pony’s home. Instead, Albert remained as unobtrusive and discreet as possible in the reconstruction of the orphanage. He invested further into this estate by purchasing the nearby property and arranging the building of a school, library, youth’s centre and medical clinic thus offering employment to many people in need of work to supplement their income. It was remarkable of Albert to make this entire project appear as an investment an not an act of philanthropy. The people working and subsequently benefiting from this project were not perceived as mendicants but as hard-working contributors all of whom Albert treated as equals and especially as equals to him. Albert’s generous offer for employment to so many people in need-including Dr martin-made Candy love Albert even more than she already did and that love was becoming deep-rooted and profound, hence, surpassing mere friendship. There was a ‘wall’ between Candy and Albert, nonetheless, but this had nothing to do with finances or social status. The awkwardness and reticence between them was personal as each of them had their own inner insecurities to grapple with. Candy was wondering whether the passage of time would help ease this tension between them or have the exact opposite effect and exacerbate it. She was hoping for the former and not the latter but this did not depend solely on her own intentions and desires.

Glancing at the window, Candy noticed that the first snowflakes were falling and the grey overcast exterior was giving way to a white blanket delicately covering the trees and hills. Candy got up to refill her mug with even more hot cocoa and then adding some more wood to the fire. Albert sprung into her her mind once again as she was wondering what he was up to that specific moment. She decided to write a letter to him gently urging him to take some time off work and visit her at Miss Pony’s. Besides, he had to visit the area at some point so as to supervise the progress of the restructuring of the orphanage. This would function as a golden opportunity for both of the them to spend some quality time and discuss in person instead of filling blank sheets of paper. Candy wanted to open her heart to Albert and thank him for his special gift which opened such a large window of opportunities for the children as well as the people working for the expansion of Miss Pony’s home. She wanted to thank him for his kindness but most of all, she wanted to thank him for the ways in which he always valued Candy and respected her as a human-being despite her humble background. She wanted to know if Albert also valued her as a woman and wanted to be with her as she wanted to be with him but that particular question may not arise yet but hopefully later on in time. Regardless of her gnawing insecurities, Candy was hoping against hope that Albert would spend time with her during Christmas at the beautifully restructured establishment of Miss Pony’s home.

Without further ado, Candy picked up a fountain pen and began writing her letter to Albert having take a seat at the secrétaire facing the fireplace.

I would like to hear from you!
